Chapter 2491: Chapter 2492: Return to Tianyun (58)

Su Xing smiled and said, ”Yes, Dad, I just finished taking the Child Student exam with my second younger brother the day before yesterday.”

Tao Chengyin’s face immediately darkened. ”You don’t take good care of your husband and go running off to take an exam?!”

Before Su Xing could speak, Taoming Ye opened his mouth. ”Dad, Xin’er was only gone for three days for the exam. Besides, I didn’t marry Xin’er so she could wait on me. If that’s what I wanted, I might as well buy a few more Young Servants to serve me every day.”

His eldest son’s words, Tao Chengyin could at least listen to a little.

His expression eased a bit as he turned to ask Su Xing, ”How did you do?”

Su Xing still wore a courteous smile. ”It should be okay, I guess.”

Tao Chengyin immediately snapped, ”What do you mean ’okay’?”

Only then did Su Xing say, ”I should be able to pass.”

Tao Chengyin cursed at once. ”What shameless bragging! How could a mere woman like you find it so easy to pass as a Martial Talent!” He didn’t believe it at all.

Su Xing felt helpless. She thought her father-in-law clearly just wanted to scold her. He had led her along step by step into saying this, hadn’t he? Still, for her husband’s sake, she decided not to argue with him.

After he finished scolding her and saw that Su Xing didn’t talk back, Tao Chengyin felt much better. His face finally relaxed completely as he asked, ”You stayed at your mother’s house for so long, and even had Ye’er stay there with you. You were preparing for this exam at your mother’s house, weren’t you?”

He had been an official for many years after all. Before, he didn’t know she was going to take the martial exam, so when she stayed at her mother’s for so long, he had actually believed she was being filial and keeping Madam Huo company. But now, he was convinced she had been at her mother’s place preparing for this Child Exam.

Su Xing immediately grinned cheekily and flattered him. ”Dad, you’re so clever!”

He hadn’t expected Su Xing to say that; the two of them had always been at each other’s throats. Tao Chengyin froze for a moment, then glared at her once before pointedly turning away from Su Xing and saying to Taoming Ye, ”Ye’er, although I don’t approve of your wife taking the martial exam, for something as important as that, you still shouldn’t have kept it from me, your father.”

Taoming Ye immediately admitted his mistake readily. ”Dad, I was wrong.”

Tao Chengyin nodded in satisfaction, then went on, ”What’s done is done. I won’t say anything more about it. Just don’t do something so muddleheaded again. This is clearly your home, so why go hide away at your mother’s house to prepare for the exam? Does that make any sense!”

Taoming Ye and Su Xing immediately said, ”Dad, we were wrong.” As the two admitted their mistake, they secretly exchanged a glance, both with smiles in their eyes.

This father loved his son so much that as long as the two of them humored him a little, the matter would just blow over.

Seeing that his son and daughter-in-law were both going along with him, Tao Chengyin felt even more pleased. Stroking his small beard, he added, ”Your second brother said it’s no problem for him to pass. If you pass too, our family will have double happiness. But I really don’t believe you can pass. I did hear that you practiced martial arts since you were young, but that was back when your father was still alive, and I heard he taught you himself. Now your father has been dead for ten years, and you were so young back then, you couldn’t have learned much of anything.”

As soon as Su Xing heard this, she knew Taoming Hai really hadn’t told Tao Chengyin about her stealing the show at the exam grounds. She didn’t expose it; she only followed along with a smile. ”Dad is absolutely right. I only picked up a bit of superficial stuff, nothing worthy of the elegant halls.”

Taoming Ye laughed inwardly. If his wife’s skills were ”unworthy of the elegant halls,” then there probably weren’t many people in this world who deserved to set foot in those halls.
