Surviving The Fourth Calamity

Chapter 1213: Chapter 1004: Conflicted Dragon Heart, Conflicted Battlefield

Elvia was feeling agitated.

For the past few millennia, she had been meticulously selecting a suitable Mage master for herself, and it seemed she chose a bit too well.

No wonder she always felt that Edna would lead her to strength... Her intuition was completely right, but maybe a little too strong.

As for the Magic Tower... Is there a more powerful Magic Tower than the Josse Garden?

How wonderful! It even allowed her to soar using her dragon form!

Elvia changed a wing to cover her head, with the icy and snowy weather outside, the frost and rain might help calm her almost boiling head.

The contract she signed with Edna was a soul contract; only death could separate them in this lifetime.

Elvia had been getting along with Edna very happily these years, so even if she thought this girl would become as strong as Elminster in the future, she accepted it.

After all, that old man could probably live for tens of thousands of years.

If Edna had just half of that guy’s skill, she might also live into a future that Elvia couldn’t even imagine.

So with a long-lived master, she was somewhat mentally prepared. At worst, she’d return to her past life—like the Undead Tribe said, commuting... be on duty when needed, and return to see her partner and raise Little White Dragons when not.

Anyhow, the Little White Dragon could also be thrown onto the White Dragon Mountain of Agleya... When passing by Agleya to see those young dragon cubs, Elvia was so jealous she didn’t even want to meet them!

A mountain full of wild chickens and rabbits, allowing those White Dragons to hunt freely... Elvia, thinking of her life before being picked up by the Old Mage, felt like rushing down to kick those dragon cubs like balls!

Moreover, Arausato, collaborating with the Undead Tribe for so long, lived happily and even forgot to return to his lair to sleep!

It’s important to know that as a sleep-loving Ancient White Dragon, Arausato had only been awake for two years out of 500 years.

If not for the Magicplague making him afraid to sleep, Arausato would have surely celebrated by sleeping for 100 years after taking over Luskan.

It was such a promising future... why did it suddenly turn into a horror story?

And as a White Dragon raised by a Mage, the thing Elvia worried about most was something else... Mystra, a term that’s more of a profession than a name, what if one day something happened to Edna, would Mystra’s new inheritor take over her?

Elvia acknowledged only Edna... She was really glad Edna wasn’t the kind of person Midnight was... But then again, if Midnight were standing there, she wouldn’t have offered herself up!

But she... couldn’t ask Edna, before she returned to the Weave, what would happen if she died again, right?

But what if next time, when Mystra recovers, she has a different personality?

Just look at Edna.

Why did the Mages who’d been with her for so long never suspect that this girl was the reincarnation of Midnight... Tsk, tsk, if anyone saw a sinister, cunning, calm, self-composed conspirator, they wouldn’t suspect she was Ambori, right?

The White Dragon, tossing and turning, turned around and decided to show her back to Edna for the time being.

”What are you and Elvia doing?” ’Old Age Striking King’ squinted mildly, admiring the beautiful nails on his left hand, while the other well-groomed right hand pressed on the gauntlet on his thigh.

”Ah... a little secret.” Edna said without blinking, ”You’ll find out in a while. Elvia and Arausato need some time to consider, so I can’t say much.”

’Old Age Striking King’ turned his head to look at her: ”Even though Elvia signed a contract with you, don’t meddle in husband and wife matters!

A married couple’s fights are disliked even by dogs, but... whoever interferes gets scorned.”

Elvia didn’t even think of turning back... Just like this, you say she’s Midnight?

Edna smiled and looked towards the big screen. Actually, her mood hadn’t been good these past two days... Why does everyone dare to take action against the Northern Seven Sisters?

Isn’t it just because they think she’s been updated and replaced again?

Thinking that by the time the new Mystra takes office in a few years, there won’t be any affection left for the former Chosen ones?

If too many forces were involved, maybe they’d even be too lazy to take revenge... A couple of public denunciations to save face.

Who are they looking down on?

The young girl’s mouth slightly twitched, seemingly smiling at Xinbu who just gave Karagos a fierce and heavy Lightning Whip... If Karagos had the ability to make Talos switch sides, he should also feel why she’s called the Storm Queen.

In fact, many people believe Xinbu is just a gender-swapped version of the Storm Goddess; if not for this girl being dragged by her kind alignment sisters, and later taking a liking to Elminster even if she constantly battled evil neighbor Sel, she probably wouldn’t have maintained chaotic neutrality for long.

Looking at how Midnight preferred that Bard Storm, it’s clear she wouldn’t like this gender-swapped Talos-like Storm Queen.

She smiled, her gaze on the battlefield, but her mind had already flown away.

As the time of awakening grew longer, Edna became clearer about her future path. She should be Edna Mistrala, the little girl from Hidden Town in Agleya who raised White Dragons.

But... although she preferred being Edna, it didn’t mean she denied Midnight’s existence.

It was just that... even Midnight preferred to be Edna.

Actually, the reason Midnight hated Black Eye was straightforward.

Deep within the Midnight who couldn’t escape that past... if not for meeting the Goddess of Magic awaiting rescue in that castle, perhaps she, Kranvo, and even Cyric, would have just been an ordinary adventure party, living a peaceful life after earning some bounty gold.

Even if Cyric had eventually been tempted by power and money to betray them... at least he wouldn’t have chosen to kill Kranvo.

They might not have become Deities as they are now, but they could have had a normal life.

She really didn’t want to see the Northern Seven Sisters, who had a closer relationship with Black Eye, and she particularly despised Azuth, who always considered her and Black Eye’s successor.

Edna had no words for her self-deception... it was they themselves who chose to accept that great mission.

Becoming the brave who saves Deities... wishing to live in the epic of heroes was also their own choice.

What Midnight never wanted to admit was... having a Soul Shard of the Goddess of Magic was why that adventure party was chosen by Black Eye.

Cyric was also targeted by those evil Deities because of her; otherwise, he would have been just a cunning, insidious, slightly greedy thief.

But Edna knew that looking at those past memories as a bystander made her so rational, while those involved would naturally choose to beautify themselves.

Midnight was someone who lived in the past and refused to face reality.

On the contrary, it was the hot-tempered, straightforward Kranvo, who understood their situation and differentiation better, probably because one of their teachers would only cajole, while the other knew how to stop them?

Azuth completely lost to Jacob in teaching students... but then again, thinking that Jacob also taught the Three Gods of Death and Cyric, it’s no surprise, considering he was someone with experience.

Kranvo always hoped Midnight would give up on her adherence to the Kind Alignment and her hostility towards Azuth, but Midnight, who thought she was fully prepared, only thought Kranvo was overthinking, why couldn’t he just support her?

But that argument and falling out made Midnight lose her sanity... Kranvo’s dissuasion made her feel that the whole world had betrayed her.

Otherwise, Cyric wouldn’t have seized the opportunity to take her down in Josse Garden.

This guy, as expected of an old teammate, knew the sensitive arcanist well and knew she would mourn under the moonlight upon receiving a certain message.

Edna smirked; she could somewhat understand why AO hoped Midnight would walk the Path of the Saint once more. That guy’s IQ would really drop to Ambori’s level when impulsive.

Having such a Midnight manage the Weave was indeed a bit troublesome.

Although it seemed unfair to the Toril people, the Magicplague this time was clearly a graduation test for Mystra alone.

But Edna wouldn’t be grateful to that old bastard. Without his madness, she wouldn’t exist.

But... thinking about her future, where she must always be careful not to cross that old entity’s red line, Edna really didn’t want to formally become a deity... actually, taking the Path of Destiny in eight years, like these folks envisioned, seemed fine, right?

Her gaze shifted back and forth and eventually stopped on the tablet placed on the stand of the ’Old Age Striking King,’ where Nasray, holding the Sorcerer’s Royal Scepter, was creating a Dead Magic Zone.

Edna chuckled indifferently: Laila was quite a creative arcanist, who had absorbed many whimsical ideas from the Undead Tribe over the years, creating many interesting Strange Objects.

Previously... Laila’s experiments could mostly be used a couple of times before they ended up in storage, wasting vast amounts of materials and gold, often leaving her in debt before she could resume experimenting.

But... now there’s the Undead Tribe in Luskan!

Although the relationship between Laila and the Undead Tribe wasn’t as harmonious as that between Hidden Town and the Agleya Municipal Officer, trade wasn’t affected at all.

The wealthy Undead Tribe only cared about amusement, paying no regard to how expensive the goods were, nor do they mind that something costing thousands of gold coins would end up like fireworks after two uses.

Edna estimated that Laila made more things in the past year than she did in a hundred years.

The Dead Magic Zone... only meant that the Weave couldn’t be used for magic and that the Primordial Power became more chaotic and irritable.

Strange Objects could still be used; as long as there was plenty of money, they could be used however one pleased.

Laila... afraid of burning money?

Edna estimated her current fortune at least doubled that of Khelben, who had operated Deepwater City for thousands of years.

However, Elaströ wasn’t prepared for this. When she received several magic wands from Laila, her usually calm face displayed a rare shock... Could Laila have embezzled money from the Lord of Agleya?
