My Alleged Husband

Chapter 129: Chapter 113 Li Jiayuan Hospitalized_1

Li Haixiao returned home in the dead of night.

”Xiao Wei, why hasn’t Dad come back yet? Do you think something might have happened?” Li Jiayuan had woken up from a nap and found Xiao Wei wasn’t sleeping next to her. She got dressed, went downstairs to look for him, and saw Xiao Wei sitting on the couch. Not seeing Li Haixiao at home, she glanced at the clock, felt it was rather late, and out of curiosity as to why her dad hadn’t returned so late, she decided to ask Xiao Wei.

When Xiao Wei saw Li Jiayuan approaching him, he spoke to her, ”Jiayuan, don’t worry, Dad just called. He said he’s working overtime tonight and will be back late, so he told us not to wait up for him for dinner. By this time, he should be almost home.”

Li Jiayuan sighed, truly worried something might happen to Li Haixiao. She said to Xiao Wei, ”How can Dad go for overtime work? Even if his recovery is going well, he shouldn’t be so careless. A small slip-up could lead to trouble. Why doesn’t he know how to take care of himself?”

Xiao Wei smiled. This naive girl was always so caring. ”Jiayuan, didn’t you hear what the doctor said? Dad needs to exercise more, he can’t just sit at home all the time. That’s even worse for his health. Think about it, does Dad ever seem to have any trouble with all the exercise he gets every day?”

Thinking it over, Li Jiayuan felt that made sense. For so long, Li Haixiao’s health had been quite good with no problems. With that in mind, she felt reassured!

Bang!

Li Haixiao had come back. As he entered, both Xiao Wei and Li Jiayuan looked up at him, but Li Haixiao didn’t understand the expression on Xiao Wei and Li Jiayuan’s faces, thinking there was something on his own face.

”Why are you two staring at me like that? I know I’m handsome, but there’s no need to look at me this way, right?” Li Haixiao asked them cheerfully.

Xiao Wei was taken aback, not expecting his father-in-law to be so vain at times!

”Dad, you’re finally back, it’s so late. Please don’t work overtime anymore. There’s nothing more important than your own health,” Li Jiayuan told Li Haixiao. She didn’t want anything to happen to her father; she just wanted the people she cared about to be with her every day. To her, that was enough.

Li Haixiao knew that Li Jiayuan was concerned about him, and he was happy to have such a caring daughter. However, he still believed that without working extra hard, how could he leave behind a little more fortune for her when he died? Nothing was more important to him than ensuring his daughter a life without worries.

”Jiayuan, don’t worry about me. I’m fine. Don’t I look well every day?” Li Haixiao told her, turning to Xiao Wei. ”Xiao Wei, how are you getting on with buying the nutritious foods I asked you to get for Jiayuan? I’m looking forward to having grandchildren every day!”

Li Jiayuan was stunned when she heard Li Haixiao, and said, ”Dad, you ordered Xiao Wei to buy those nutritional supplements?”

Li Haixiao didn’t understand why Li Jiayuan was so surprised by the statement—it was just a supplement.

”Yes, what’s wrong? Why are you so shocked about the supplement?” Li Haixiao asked her.

It turned out she had misunderstood Xiao Wei all along. Li Jiayuan had thought those nutritional supplements were Xiao Wei’s idea to strengthen her body, believing that he wanted to have a child soon, which was why he did that. She never expected it all to be her father’s idea...

”Alright, it’s getting late, and in just a few hours, it will be dawn. You two should go and rest,” Li Haixiao told Xiao Wei and Li Jiayuan.

Li Jiayuan really wanted to tell her father that she had already slept and had just woken up shortly before he came home.

”Dad, have you had dinner? It’s so late; let me make something for you to eat,” Li Jiayuan still didn’t dare to tell Li Haixiao about that matter. She quickly shifted the topic, thinking that her father must be hungry by now. However, Li Haixiao straightforwardly declined her kind offer.

”No need, I’m not hungry. I’m off to rest now, and you two should rest soon too. Don’t forget what I just mentioned about the grandchild!” Li Haixiao reminded Li Jiayuan again as he turned to go upstairs.

”Who does this every day, thinking only about holding a grandson?” Li Jiayuan didn’t pay attention to Li Haixiao and stood by herself next to the couch, muttering to herself.

Xiao Wei led Li Jiayuan upstairs and began to explain, ”Jiayuan, don’t be mad at Dad for thinking about a grandson every day. Actually, you should think more about Dad’s feelings too. Don’t you think that at his age, he should, by all rights, be enjoying the pleasures of family life? Yet we don’t have children. What if he has no one to keep him company all the time when he’s idle? It’s so boring to be all alone. He just wishes for a child to keep him company, someone to play ball with or talk to when there’s nothing else to do. For someone as old as he is, that kind of life is the most beautiful...”

Li Jiayuan felt that what Xiao Wei said made a lot of sense, so she suddenly interrupted him, ”Then let’s start working on fulfilling Dad’s wish right now!”

Before the night had ended, Li Jiayuan suddenly complained of severe stomach pain. Xiao Wei, worried, asked her, ”Jiayuan, what’s wrong?”

”My stomach hurts...” Li Jiayuan was sweating profusely in pain, clutching her stomach with both hands.

When Xiao Wei turned on the light, he saw a lot of blood on the bed, all from Li Jiayuan. He panicked, snatching up his phone to dial emergency services.

By the time Li Jiayuan was taken to the hospital, she had already passed out.

A short while later, a doctor came out of the emergency room and asked Xiao Wei, ”Are you the family member of the patient?”

”Yes, I’m her husband. Doctor, how is my wife?” Xiao Wei asked anxiously, his words coming in fits and starts.

”The patient is showing signs of a miscarriage. Do you want to proceed with a dilation and curettage?” The doctor’s words confused Xiao Wei. How could she be pregnant? Li Haixiao, who had just arrived at the hospital, heard what the doctor told Xiao Wei and stumbled up to the doctor, grabbing his hand.

”Doctor, you must save my daughter, and the child too!”

”Alright, we will do our best.”

The doctor re-entered the emergency room. Xiao Wei was still absorbed in the shock of the doctor’s news about the child. He wondered if it was due to his own excessive force with Li Jiayuan that this had happened?

Li Haixiao paced anxiously outside the emergency room. He hadn’t expected the grandson he’d longed for to come into the world so soon.

As time ticked by, Li Haixiao and Xiao Wei waited in desperate anxiety outside the emergency room. Eventually, the doctor came out.

”Doctor, how is my daughter? My grandson is alright, right?” Li Haixiao asked urgently.

The doctor sighed and said to Li Haixiao, ”The pregnant woman is no longer in any significant danger, and the child is safe too. One of you come with me to get the examination report.”

Xiao Wei nodded and followed the doctor to his office. There he asked, ”Doctor, is my wife really okay now?”

Xiao Wei’s question clearly made the doctor uncomfortable. She sized him up from head to toe and said, ”Young man, you seem like a decent person, but don’t you know anything about moderation? Besides, don’t you know that people who have just gotten pregnant shouldn’t be doing ’those things’? What you’ve done is tantamount to being utterly blind to your wife’s life. Thankfully, you got her here in time. If you had been any later, the child really might not have been saved. Young man, let me give you some advice: a woman is to be cherished, not used as a tool for childbearing! Here is the examination report.”

Xiao Wei took Li Jiayuan’s examination report from the doctor’s hand, feeling like a complete scoundrel. Despite being with Li Jiayuan every day, he hadn’t even noticed she was pregnant and had nearly ended this little life himself. The thought of the suffering Li Jiayuan had endured made his heart ache. He loved Li Jiayuan so deeply yet had allowed her to experience such tremendous pain.

After leaving the doctor’s office, Xiao Wei hurried home to make nourishing soup for Li Jiayuan.
