My Alleged Husband

Chapter 123: Chapter 107 Scheme_1

”I choose to trust you this once, and I hope you can remember the words you’ve spoken to us today. If one day your father really intends to use Xiao Wei for some reason, I absolutely will not let Xiao Wei continue to stay by your side,” Zhang Zhentian told Li Jiayuan.

Li Jiayuan was somewhat puzzled. When had Zhang Zhentian become so close with Xiao Wei?

”Jiayuan, your sister believes you will treat Xiao Wei well. After everything you’ve been through, you deserve happiness. Cherish each other and don’t do anything that would hurt one another or that you might regret. There are no remedies for regret in this world, only mutual treasuring can keep you together forever,” Xia Jing said earnestly, holding Li Jiayuan’s hands.

Xiao Wei was deeply touched. Who would have thought that her sister and brother-in-law would stand up for her? What good deeds had she done in a previous life to deserve this?

”Sis, don’t worry. I know you and brother-in-law are concerned that Xiao Wei might face difficulties from my father after our marriage, but I still hope you can trust me. Trust in the true strength of Xiao Wei’s and my feelings, trust that I truly love Xiao Wei. In this lifetime, I will never do anything to make Xiao Wei sad. If I ever do, you are free to take Xiao Wei away...” Li Jiayuan said passionately to Xia Jing and Zhang Zhentian.

As they watched Li Jiayuan’s fervent demeanor, Zhang Zhentian, Xiao Wei, and Xia Jing found it rather amusing. Thus, Xia Jing truly felt at ease, now believing Li Jiayuan’s sincerity toward Xiao Wei.

Four hours later, the wedding began.

Li Jiayuan and Xiao Wei’s wedding drew many guests, mainly from Wealthy Families. Among them were daughters from rich families, young masters from affluent households, and even some business rivals of Li Haixiao. Some were there to offer sincere congratulations, some were curious about the man who managed to gain Li Haixiao’s easy consent for marrying his daughter, some wanted to see what this legendary mercenary captain looked like, and some were purely there for the spectacle...

”Welcome, welcome!” Li Haixiao said to Old Master Zhang as he walked in the door. Li Haixiao had never imagined Old Master Zhang attending his daughter’s wedding; he felt that even if he sent an invitation, Old Master Zhang might not honor it with his presence. So he simply sent the invitation to Zhang Zhentian instead, asking him to invite the entire Zhang family over. Unexpectedly, Old Master Zhang had agreed so readily.

”President Li, congratulations!” Old Master Zhang said to Li Haixiao. Since Li Haixiao had sent invitations to his whole family, and Old Master Zhang was not one to disregard courtesy. After all, business matters should not get in the way of personal feelings. Why, then, would Old Master Zhang not attend Li Jiayuan’s wedding?

”President Zhang, you flatter me too much. My past faults were my own, and I hope you could forgive my pettiness and not hold it against me. Going forward, we are all one family. Although Jiayuan didn’t end up with Zhentian, Xiao Wei is Xia Jing’s brother, which makes him part of the Zhang family too. In the future, I hope Brother Zhang could look out for our family more!” Li Haixiao laughed as he spoke to Old Master Zhang.

If it were any other time, Old Master Zhang would have been pleased to hear Li Haixiao speak to him in such a manner. But currently, he was not particularly happy. On the contrary, he was somewhat disdainful of Li Haixiao. He suspected Li Haixiao’s sudden respectful tone must be due to the western city project collaboration. Yet, Li Haixiao was unaware of this matter. Li Haixiao’s words were truly heartfelt; he no longer desired to compete with Old Master Zhang, fearing that if anything untoward should happen to him, Old Master Zhang might still show his daughter some regard and support Li Jiayuan, preventing decades of his hard work from vanishing into thin air.

”President Li, you jest. How could I address you as my brother? I want to ask you something. Are you speaking to me so politely today out of sincerity, or is it because I’ve had Xia Jing offer the western city project collaboration as a wedding gift to Jiayuan, which is why you’re being so gracious?” Old Master Zhang was straightforward and could not keep secrets hidden. When he asked Li Haixiao this question, Li Haixiao was stunned. How could he be unaware of the western city project collaboration becoming Li Jiayuan’s wedding gift?

Li Haixiao awkwardly said to Old Master Zhang, ”You have misunderstood me, I had no knowledge of the Chengxi project cooperation becoming Jiayuan’s wedding gift, but everything I just said to you came from the heart. Honestly, I have been hospitalized for some time and was only discharged from the hospital a few days ago. If my condition is good, I might live a few more years, but if it deteriorates, I may not survive beyond a year. I’m sharing this only to hope that you could let bygones be bygones. Should I suddenly pass away, I hope Brother Zhang can help Jiayuan with her business so that my years of hard work won’t go to waste.”

Old Master Zhang did not expect Li Haixiao to be so forthright about his illness. He asked Li Haixiao, ”Does President Li trust Zhang so much? Aren’t you afraid I will kick you while you’re down?”

Upon hearing Old Master Zhang’s words, Li Haixiao couldn’t help but burst out laughing. Old Master Zhang couldn’t understand why Li Haixiao would suddenly laugh so heartily, nor did he know what Li Haixiao was really planning. Curiously, he looked at Li Haixiao, who then said to Old Master Zhang, ”Brother Zhang, although we have been rivals for many years, I know you too well. You may appear to others as someone who would do anything to achieve his goals, but at heart, you are not that kind of person. You are a man of integrity, and I believe you would never act that way. Even if you would, in the end, you would abandon such methods for Xia Jing’s sake!”

Old Master Zhang did not understand what Li Haixiao meant by his words and asked, ”Could President Li clarify what you mean? What is this about ultimately giving up for Xia Jing’s sake?”

”Brother Zhang, it seems you have a short memory typical of the nobility. Have you forgotten that on the day Zhentian married Xia Jing, she acknowledged Jiayuan as her sister? Now Xia Jing is pregnant, and once the child is born, it will have to call Jiayuan ’Auntie.’ Do you think you could go against Jiayuan without Xia Jing getting upset? Would you want your beloved grandson to be known as the grandson of someone who wouldn’t spare even his own little aunt?”

With each sentence he spoke to Old Master Zhang, Li Haixiao stepped closer.

Zhang Zhentian had not realized how deep Li Haixiao’s scheming ran.

He did not expect the sisterhood between Li Jiayuan and Xia Jing to be a calculated move, but what could he do now? He couldn’t possibly deny the truth, could he?

Seeing Old Master Zhang look defeated in his hands gave Li Haixiao an exhilarating sense of triumph!

Old Master Zhang glared at Li Haixiao furiously, thinking, How could this be, Xia Jing? What should I say about you, so easily deceived by such a simple trick? Alas, it seems I really can’t take over the Li Corporation now.

”Fine, I agree, but you mustn’t tell anyone about this, or I reserve the right to renounce our agreement,” Old Master Zhang said to Li Haixiao, unable to find another solution and only agreeing with Li Haixiao’s plan to safeguard his grandson from public scrutiny.

”Don’t worry, my word is my bond, Brother Zhang. Let me wish us a pleasant collaboration in advance!” Li Haixiao had the look of someone who had gained an advantage but still acted coyly, which didn’t sit well with Old Master Zhang at all, and to top it off, he even reached out to Old Master Zhang with a ”handshake gesture.”
