My Alleged Husband

Chapter 1640: Chapter 1434: Distant Lands

A person’s life has many ways of living. Whether it is happy depends on whether his life choices are the same. It’s possible that his happiness can make one person happy, but a blissful life might also make him feel shattered.

Another week has passed, making it the third week since Zhang Zhentian and Xia Jing’s car accident. They are all waiting for their family members to wake up, but disappointment follows disappointment.

Xiao Wei has been waiting here for an entire week, hoping for his sister and brother-in-law to regain consciousness. Why does it seem like fate is toying with them? The family is anxiously waiting, yet the patients inside show no reaction. Even the medical staff can’t bear it anymore, hardly able to believe there are families so devoted, waiting tirelessly without leaving. But fate is indeed unfair to them.

During this period, rumors have spread that Old Master Zhang’s character has changed, claiming that his son’s actions have once again landed him in the hospital. Yet, who knows that the real reason for his severe hospitalization is not due to his son’s actions infuriating him, but the emotional blow of his son being hospitalized that led to his coma.

Every time Old Master Zhang wakes from his dreams, he asks his grandson if his son and daughter-in-law have woken up. He wishes to know about their condition, but every time, the answer from his grandson and the medical staff is negative, slowly eroding his will.

Everyone feels that this situation shouldn’t develop this way. Why can’t the patients, who’ve already passed the life-threatening phase, wake up? Even when all the ventilators have been removed, the two lie there quietly as if dead, with all their vital signs normal, yet there’s no way to open their eyes.

Li Jiayuan has been waiting for a long time, a whole week, for her husband to return home. She is getting worried and increasingly uneasy, feeling that this matter isn’t as simple as it seems.

Even when her husband used to travel for work, he never stayed away for so long. Moreover, this is not a work trip but a return to China. Why is it that after so many days, there’s still no news? Although they talk on the phone every night, her inner anxiety is growing stronger.

She decides to return home to investigate, to see what major event is keeping her husband away for a whole week with only brief phone calls with her as his wife.

At this moment, Lei Kai walks in, seeing his mother ready to leave with her packed luggage. Curious about her plans, he quickly asks, ”Mom, where are you going with all this luggage? Are you going on a trip or heading back to China?”

Li Jiayuan feels puzzled. She hadn’t said where she was going, so why did her son assume she was returning to China? Did he know something?

”Kai, tell me honestly, do you know why your dad went back to China? Why are you all aware but unwilling to inform me? Tell me truthfully, do you know what’s really happening?”

”Mom, you don’t know? Brother Yichen’s parents were in a severe car accident weeks ago. They were planning to travel abroad, but it ended in a major accident, leaving them in comas. Dad must have gone back because of this; after all, that’s his sister!”

Upon hearing this from her son, Li Jiayuan finally understands. This is the reason. No wonder her husband chose to return home to China. Such a significant event, yet he didn’t tell her, likely to prevent her from worrying.

”Why does everyone know about this except me? Why have I been kept in the dark? Even if you want to spare me the worry, at least tell me something for basic respect, don’t you think?

I’m part of this family. Over the years I haven’t meddled in your decisions, but you should tell me about such matters. Regardless, I’m friends with them, so I should visit them. This is basic human decency!

Why do you father and son hide things from me? Do you see me as an unreasonable woman? I’m your mother and his wife. Have you thought about how I’d feel upon learning the truth?”

Lei Kai was surprised at his mother’s strong reaction. He’d considered telling her sooner, but didn’t know how to begin.

Uncertain about the details, he worried if telling her now might lead her to rush back to China to find his father. He knew some old family grievances, but didn’t realize how much things had changed.

”Mom, we didn’t tell you for your own good. We know you’re not petty, but we really didn’t know how to tell you. I’ve been torn about whether to inform you earlier, to spare you the hurt of thinking we hid everything from you.

But we chose, to let you not worry, to avoid back-and-forth travel, to keep this hidden as long as we could!

It’s just, we didn’t expect...”

”You didn’t expect I’d find out so soon, that I’d discover the truth quickly, right? Stop acting so independently, show some respect for my opinion. Even if you don’t want me to go back, communicate and I’d understand.

But ignoring my feelings over and over is not treating me like family! Have you thought about how awkward this could make me? What will others say if they find out?”

The past me is gone, never to return. I won’t repeat past actions. Every step is my own choice, even if the path ahead is thorny, I’ll still press forward.
