Chapter 588: Chapter 87: Grizzly Bear’s Sneak Attack

For the bearded man who lived off the mountains.

He could recognize most of the plants and animals in the mountains.

And as an older hunter, he had an even deeper memory of some plants with medicinal effects.

Among them was fireweed.

And Chen Wen noted down the name of fireweed from the bearded man.

Mainly because the roots and stems of fireweed are edible and also have medicinal effects.

At the time, he thought that if he wanted to add some flavor to the hunted game, he could add fireweed roots to the meat soup.

Most families in Hua Country have this habit.

When cooking meat soup or chicken soup, they add some nourishing Chinese herbs.

Chen Wen was no exception.

Therefore, he noted it down.

Fireweed is edible, and so is porcupine; this time, it’s perfect, kill the porcupine first, then dig up the fireweed!

Chen Wen quickly confirmed the plan.

He gripped the long spear in his hand and began to approach.

Now, the distance between him and the porcupine was about a hundred meters away.

At this distance, Chen Wen had no confidence in throwing the long spear.

Moreover, the forest was full of trees, severely obstructing the view.

If it weren’t for the loud noise of the porcupine that his ”Little Ears” picked up,

he might not have been able to see this porcupine at all.

Therefore, Chen Wen planned to get within fifty to sixty meters before hunting.

This was also a test of his stalking ability.

After all, most hunters try to get as close as possible to prey before launching an attack.

He had mostly ambushed prey ahead of time, and he hadn’t approached and ambushed the prey often.

This time was just right to try.

Chen Wen thought as he began to slowly approach.

When he got to about fifty meters away,

he slowly stopped.

At this time, the North American porcupine seemed to notice something and had stopped eating.

It was cautiously observing its surroundings, ready to flee at any moment.

”What a pity.”

Chen Wen sighed. At fifty meters, he only had about a fifty percent chance of killing the porcupine.

What went wrong?

How did this porcupine notice him?

Chen Wen thought he moved very quietly, and the porcupine definitely couldn’t hear him.

Nor could it see him.

Because the porcupine was always facing away from him.

Then it must be the scent.

Chen Wen sniffed himself and noticed a strong odor.

Coupled with the fact that he was now upwind,

well, no more ambushing, just go for it.

Chen Wen simply stood up and exposed himself.

However, he was not flustered.

Porcupines move very slowly; most of the time, they rely on walking.

Their bodies wobble, and their speed is not much faster than an old lady with a cane.

Chen Wen, who had failed to get close, strode towards the porcupine.

With ”Forest Concealment Step” fully deployed, he could easily avoid obstacles in the forest and quickly approach.

The porcupine, upon discovering Chen Wen, instinctively tried to flee.

But once Chen Wen began running, the porcupine knew it couldn’t escape.

It twisted its body, shaking its fur to let a bundle of sharp thorns emerge.

This was its invincible secret weapon!

But just when the porcupine thought it could use its thorns to drive away this never-before-seen creature,

Chen Wen raised his long spear.

Does he also have thorns?

The porcupine thought.

In the next second, Chen Wen thrust out with the long spear.

The porcupine was furious.

How could this be? I’ve dominated this forest for most of my life, always the one to pierce other animals, yet now another animal pierces me?

It bristled its thorns, ready to counter-stab Chen Wen.

But the next second, when the long spear’s tip touched its skin, the porcupine regretted it.

Too hard!

That was the porcupine’s last thought.

Shh!

”This little guy showed some courage, daring to charge against a spear,”

Chen Wen admired the porcupine’s bravery.

But with that one spear thrust, the porcupine was dead beyond a doubt.

”One porcupine, not a bad harvest, and these fireweed roots should also be plentiful,”

Chen Wen placed the porcupine aside and began digging up the fireweed roots.

...

Meanwhile, when Chen Wen speared the porcupine to death,

back at his camp,

the eagle watched the uninvited guest with tension.

It was huge!

Very huge!

Not easy to provoke!

But this uninvited guest seemed somewhat intimidated by the protection of Chen Wen, as it didn’t come close immediately.

Instead, it circled around the camp.

If the wolf mink and red fox were present, they would have recognized this intruder.

It was the gray bear once offended by the wolf mink!

At that time, Chen Wen used the flames to scare away the gray bear, making it dare not cause trouble at the camp again.

But with Chen Wen transporting food back yesterday, the bloodstains and scent left along the way still attracted this terror-inducing creature on the brink of hibernation!

Last night, the gray bear had been scouting the outskirts of Chen Wen’s camp.

Driven by the lure of food and greed,

the bear came this morning!

The gray bear circled around the camp several times, confirming that Chen Wen was not inside.

The terrifying creature capable of controlling fire was absent!

Good news for the gray bear!

It could smell the abundant food inside that peculiar makeshift building!

And very fresh!

After a brief internal struggle,

the gray bear overcame its fear and began to approach the shelter.

At this moment, the eagle flapped its wings and flew down from the tree.

It attempted to block the gray bear.

But the difference in size made it completely no match for the gray bear.

The gray bear stood on its hind legs, waving its claws as it was about to swat at the eagle.

Seeing the giant bear paw, the eagle was startled and immediately retreated.

Completely outmatched!

If it got hit once, it would be dead!

The eagle shivered.

Just as it was about to turn and leave to find Chen Wen for help,

it suddenly remembered that the short-tailed weasel was still in the shelter!

The eagle loudly called for the weasel and used its agile body to draw the gray bear’s attention.

The short-tailed weasel, awakening to the noise and sensing the unfamiliar smell, swiftly darted out of the shelter,

only to be startled by the sight of the gray bear.

With a swoosh, it fled into the forest.

The gray bear didn’t chase it.

Its target was the raw meat Chen Wen stored in the shelter.

Seeing the weasel escape, the eagle breathed a sigh of relief.

It screeched loudly, telling the weasel to hide, while it spread its wings and flew away, searching for Chen Wen.

With no animals left to obstruct it, the gray bear shifted its attention to the inside of the shelter.

It sniffed the smells.

The scent of meat was mixed with a burnt aroma it didn’t like.

However, its craving for meat led the gray bear to the vicinity of Chen Wen’s shelter.

It noticed something stacked with stones between the walls of dirt.

The smell was coming from this gap.

Especially from a large gap, the burnt smell was potent!

But so was the aroma!

This gap was the chimney Chen Wen left when building the fireplace.

The gray bear growled softly, as if cheering itself on.

It approached the fireplace at Chen Wen’s place, raised its paw, and slapped down.

Unmoved.

The gray bear was somewhat angry.

It gathered its strength and crashed into the fireplace.

Crack!

Under the bear’s brute force,

the rocks cracked, and the binding clay shattered!

At the same time, with the collapse of the fireplace, a pot of boiling water Chen Wen placed beside it was knocked over, the water spilling onto Chen Wen’s fire!

Sizzle!

Thick smoke rose with intense sizzling sounds.

The gray bear felt the heat and smoke, accompanied by that ominous sizzling.

The memories of fire flared up, fear occupied the bear’s mind again.

With a low growl, it quickly fled.
