Chapter 570: Chapter 69: Building a Bed, Stewing Porcupine

The small hunting group was constantly hunting outside.

On Chen Wen’s side.

He received news brought back by Eagle: ”There are rabbits trapped!”

Eagle flapped its wings with a rustle and landed atop the beam of the shelter.

It tilted its head, looked at Chen Wen, and said, ”Those amazing things you set up trapped several rabbits!”

The traps worked!

Chen Wen grinned.

Eagle continued, ”I tried dragging them, but couldn’t move them at all, so I came back. If I could have pulled the rabbits down, I might have been able to bring them back.”

Hearing Eagle’s words, Chen Wen frowned and pondered for a moment.

If he taught Eagle how to untie the traps, Chen Wen felt it could still learn, but Eagle wouldn’t be able to restore the trap to its original state.

So, even if he taught Eagle, it would only reduce his trips over.

And with Eagle’s sharp claws and beak, if it really got involved, it might end up damaging the snares.

”Forget it, those things are a bit tricky and not really suitable for you to handle.”

Chen Wen dismissed the idea of replacing himself with Eagle to disarm traps.

If it were a primate, it might be worth a try, but not for Eagle.

Seeing Eagle somewhat disappointed, Chen Wen said, ”Though you can’t do that, guarding the camp shouldn’t be difficult. I’ll go check the traps later, and you watch the camp, okay?”

This time, Eagle readily agreed.

Eagle guarding the house wouldn’t be an issue; after all, it was a bird of prey.

Most small animals that liked to steal food would end up adding to its meal when they encountered Eagle.

...

Chen Wen went over to the traps.

However, he went to the second trap, the place Eagle scouted.

Chen Wen planned to go to the lowland area the next day.

He returned to camp with three Arctic rabbits.

Chen Wen didn’t rush to deal with them; as it was noon, he planned to stew the North American porcupine whose fur was burned off yesterday.

Taking the North American porcupine and the pot to the lake, he again cleaned the porcupine’s body.

Then he picked up an axe and chopped the porcupine into small pieces.

After finishing chopping the meat, he rinsed it with clear water.

The North American porcupine was almost ready.

Chen Wen put the North American porcupine into the pot and added clear water.

Then he carried the pot back into the camp.

Seeing the pot full of meat, Eagle occasionally turned its head to sneak a look.

That’s a lot of meat!

He lit a fire under the pot, added some pine needles, and put the lid on the pot.

Chen Wen began stewing the North American porcupine.

Taking advantage of the time the meat was stewing, he completed the final step in making the bed.

His bed was made of stone and wood.

The remaining stones were laid on the ground to raise the bed platform off the ground.

Then he sawed the wood into plank size and laid them on the stones.

Finally, he laid the tanned bear skin on the bed planks; since it was a single bed, he could fold the bear skin to use as a blanket.

After building the bed, Chen Wen lay on it for a test.

It felt quite nice.

Much more comfortable than lying on the ground.

...

”It’s going to change.”

At the same time, on the production team’s side.

Greg looked at the weather forecast for the coming days and couldn’t help but say.

The guide next to him glanced at the computer screen and took a deep breath: ”Windy days and a cold front, hiss! This is not good news for the contestants!”

Just the temperature drop alone was a test of the contestants’ early shelter construction efforts.

Adding the strong winds would be a severe test for them!

”The wind, averaging level eight or even level nine, with some areas possibly experiencing level ten winds, geez... We haven’t had such extreme weather in previous years.”

The guide sighed and said, ”It’s foreseeable that this winter, the weather won’t be very good. Chen Wen and Roland, the two contestants who insisted on building stone houses, might be at an advantage!”

Hearing this, Greg nodded as well.

This could be seen as nature helping Chen Wen and Roland.

Their shelters should withstand this wave of strong winds without issue.

But other contestants would have a harder time.

Especially Hua Yun, who is using a mobile hunting strategy; her shelter is only halfway built, and she’ll have a tough time these next two windy days!

”In any case, let’s see how this tests their shelters,” said Greg, looking down as he turned through the logbook.

...

On Chen Wen’s side.

Whether it’s windy or not, he wasn’t too concerned.

At this moment, Chen Wen’s eyes were already fixated on the stewing North American porcupine.

”This meat, wow, it looks so fragrant!”

He poked a piece of good meat with chopsticks, the fat and meat skin trembling, full of collagen!

As the internet puts it, just one bite and you’d be overwhelmed by the aroma!

Even with the musky odor of porcupine, this meat made Chen Wen’s appetite soar.

”Add a bit more salt, perfect!”

Chen Wen ground a small piece of solid salt and added it to the pot.

Soon, along with the rising smoke, waves of meat fragrance slowly wafted out.

Seeing the stew almost ready, Chen Wen hurriedly used chopsticks to fish out the meat pieces.

A bowl of meat with a little bit of hot soup.

On the shores of Great Slave Lake nearing winter, this was simply a delight!

Chen Wen took the food bowl, crafted from a candy box, outside the shelter, planning to eat meat while soaking up the less-than-splendid sunlight.

He also used the ”Warm Light” to enhance food absorption efficiency and boost energy intake.

”Speaking of which, where did the Wolf Mink go?”

Chen Wen glanced at the quiet surroundings of the shelter and couldn’t help but think.

These three went hunting; have they been out hunting all day?

But with the old wolf around, it’s unlikely they’ll encounter any danger, so I’m not worried!

Chen Wen tossed one of the rabbits brought back in the morning to Eagle; this was its allotted food for today and tomorrow.

Eagle grabbed the Arctic rabbit and took it to a nearby tree.

It planned to eat there.

Chen Wen didn’t wait for the Wolf Mink either; he used chopsticks to pick up a piece of fatty meat and began to eat heartily.

The long-lost fat erupted in his mouth, and Chen Wen contentedly squinted his eyes.

Delicious!

Comfortable!

Spitting out the bones, Chen Wen continued eating heartily.

This North American porcupine, possibly eating more in preparation for winter, had quite a high fat content.

It was incredibly satisfying to eat.

Besides filling his stomach, the North American porcupine also offered Chen Wen an entry.

Aiming at nature’s creations—North American Porcupine, plundering!

[Plundering... Plundering complete!]

[Please choose one of the following three entries]

[Dull (Blue): You will become duller, with slower reactions and reduced speed]

[Note: I’m already moving at full speed~—North American Porcupine]

[Thorn (Purple): When using piercing weapons, you can more easily pierce a target’s body, and the bleeding from the target will slightly increase]

[Note: My thorns have barbs!—North American Porcupine]

[Path Finder (Purple): Enhance memory of routes, you will find it easier to remember the paths you have traveled, and can form a clear map in your mind]

[Note: I’m an old pig that knows the way!—North American Porcupine]

[Please make a choice within one minute or give up! The first entry will be automatically chosen after the deadline!]

Seeing the entries from the North American porcupine, Chen Wen was somewhat surprised.

He hadn’t seen such peculiar entries before.

The [Thorn] entry turns out to be a weapon effect, increasing the lethality of piercing weapons.

Piercing weapons, most commonly used in the wild, are spears and bows.

Quite useful, a pretty good entry.

And the [Path Finder] entry is something he’s seeing for the first time.

It turns out to enhance memory.

And it’s very effective for wilderness survival.

In cases of getting lost in the wilderness, it’s often because people can’t find the way.

But for Chen Wen, this entry is not very useful.

His sense of direction is good, so he doesn’t need it.

Therefore, Chen Wen chose [Thorn].
