Chapter 556: Chapter 55: Fred Hunts a Bear

The North American gray wolf officially joined Chen Wen.

However, Chen Wen didn’t rush to put it to use but instead let it stay at the camp to recover from its injuries.

At the same time, it looked after the camp and the food.

The old wolf was quite touched by Chen Wen’s trust.

It diligently watched over the camp, without a hint of negligence, even more responsibly than the wolf mink and red fox.

With the blessing and treatment from Chen Wen, this North American gray wolf’s strength recovered quickly.

There were faint signs of a second spring in its life.

After discussing among themselves, the wolf mink and red fox continued hunting.

As for Chen Wen, he took the opportunity in the afternoon to check the place where he set the fishing net.

”Hope there’s a harvest today!”

As he walked on the road, Chen Wen couldn’t help but think.

His current food reserves were already insufficient.

Of course, it was mainly the lack of meat.

After all, besides feeding himself meat, he was also feeding the wolf mink, red fox, and now an additional North American gray wolf.

These animals eat meat ferociously.

Therefore, figuring out how to get more food and put these three animals to use.

This counted as Chen Wen’s current short-term goal.

He arrived at the lake.

This time, after descending the cliff, Chen Wen suddenly brightened up.

There’s something!

Just as the fishing net set in the lake swung with the water, there was a patch of white in it.

From the shore, Chen Wen saw it clearly.

It was a big fish!

He quickly pulled the pine to drag the fishing net up.

Upon looking closer, it wasn’t just one!

”Two fish! Both are whitefish!”

Whitefish, a term for cold-water fish widely distributed from the temperate zones to the Arctic Circle in the Northern Hemisphere.

The various fish belonging to the whitefish species, their habitats can even extend all the way into the Arctic Circle.

This type of fish is very nutritious and is a highly valuable economic fish.

Moreover, they possess characteristics of most cold-water fish, which is being large!

Adult whitefish weigh at least five pounds, and depending on the species, there could even be giants of thirty to forty pounds.

Their body length is generally above twenty centimeters, and the bigger ones can grow over a meter.

They belong to the category of fish with plenty of meat and delicious taste.

The two whitefish Chen Wen caught were rather large.

”One is twenty centimeters, this one is a bit smaller, but it’s also close to fifteen centimeters!”

Chen Wen said, quite excitedly.

If eaten sparingly, these two fish could last at least three days!

However, Chen Wen usually doesn’t conserve, estimating they’d be finished in a day or two.

He also needed to leave some for the two, no, now three animals.

Chen Wen directly gutted the two fish with a hunting knife by the shore, removed the innards, and cleaned them.

Chen Wen didn’t leave the innards on the lakeshore but directly threw them into the water.

As a kind of baiting.

His main target was still the larger pike, which feeds on fish meat.

After processing the two fish, Chen Wen headed towards the shelter with them.

He already thought about tonight’s dish.

Whitefish stewed with stone ear mushrooms.

Getting two entries at once, and along the way, reducing some internal heat.

The recent days of eating bear meat, wolf mink meat, and rabbit meat had allowed Chen Wen to accumulate quite a bit of internal heat.

Blisters filled with hot air had even formed around his mouth.

...

While Chen Wen was entering the hunting phase, others were not slow either.

Moreover, there was one contestant who did something that greatly shocked the production team.

Number Ten, Fred.

He had come across a black bear earlier and attempted to set a trap to hunt it.

However, after setting the trap, his luck took a sharp turn.

The black bear seemed to vanish and never appeared again, wasting a full two days of Fred’s time.

This made Fred very frustrated, and he could only painfully give up the hunt.

But just now, things took a turn for the better.

Like usual, Fred came over without much hope, planning to check the trap’s status.

After giving up the hunt, he hadn’t dismantled the trap.

But precisely because of this, when Fred checked the trap, he noticed something wrong.

The ground trap he had set was triggered!

A particularly strong black bear was caught in the trap!

Fred’s trap was crafted using wood and rope.

He tied the rope and wood together, making it look like a big net, and set up a trigger mechanism.

This black bear was lured by the bait and triggered the mechanism as it passed by.

When the mechanism was triggered, the big net overhead fell abruptly, trapping the black bear inside.

The rope net was soft and tough, beyond the bear’s ability to tear.

The particularly heavy wood made it difficult for the bear to move around.

It had been trapped here for over an hour and was dragging the net, struggling to move into the forest.

Fred, making a decisive decision, took out his axe.

With a fierce look on his face, he slowly approached the trapped black bear.

The black bear also noticed Fred.

The bear’s intelligence made it aware that it was this tall and strong guy who had trapped it!

It let out a terrifying roar, manifesting extreme ferocity.

Without any warning, man and bear faced off!

Unlike others, as a lumberjack and hunter who grew up living in the Siberian Forest, Fred had a very clear understanding of bears.

He knew very well what kind of skills these cunning animals had.

Therefore, the moment he faced the black bear, he was extremely cautious and careful.

Even though he had the experience of fighting with brown bears and tamed black bears.

Fred picked up the axe, cautiously circling toward the black bear.

This action agitated the black bear.

This American black bear was similar to the one Chen Wen encountered, but due to the constraints of the rope net, its strength and combat power were weaker than the one Chen Wen encountered.

Fred also keenly sensed the black bear’s weakening strength.

Therefore, he planned to exhaust the black bear’s strength by utilizing the rope net and find an opportunity to cleave open the bear’s head with his axe.

Fred held the axe, continuously roaring to intimidate and provoke the black bear.

And taking advantage of when the black bear was inattentive, he occasionally feigned forward charges, teasing the bear’s fragile nerves.

The black bear found Fred’s tactics very discomfiting.

It couldn’t discern if Fred was genuinely attacking or bluffing.

Thus, every time Fred roared, it also responded with growls and struggled to launch an attack at Fred.

Every time Fred feigned a forward charge, the black bear would instinctively dodge to the side.

But did Fred really attack?

The answer was definitely no.

Fred preserved his strength well, while this black bear’s strength was being continually depleted.

Fight, and it couldn’t hit; flee, and it couldn’t escape.

This American black bear felt pretty desperate.

Soon, Fred had almost depleted the black bear’s strength.

After missing a lunge, the American black bear’s body went soft, and it instinctively toppled to the side.

Fred sharply seized this opportunity.

He strode forward, raised the axe high, and delivered a fierce blow aimed at the bear’s neck.

”Ura!”

Accompanied by Fred’s roar, just like chopping down a tree, the axe deeply embedded itself into the American black bear’s body.

And having successfully landed the hit, Fred showed no greed for the knife.

After the strike, he retreated, evading the black bear’s dying attack.
