Wilderness Survival with Druid System

Chapter 574: Chapter 73: Reindeer

It might be because the smoke was too thick, or possibly because the wolverine’s sudden movement triggered the rabbits’ tension.

Soon, the arctic hare, which was crouching in its nest, made a move!

It tentatively approached the red fox’s side, attempting to escape from there.

And the red fox’s senses were equally sharp.

It gently lifted its paw, pressing a few times toward the entrance it was guarding.

Chen Wen immediately noticed the red fox’s signal and turned his head to check on the fox’s side.

Soon, after sensing that the outside should be safe,

the arctic hare suddenly bolted out.

Its speed was quite fast, like an arrow leaving the bowstring.

However, as a predator, the red fox was not slow in its actions either.

With a small leap, it easily pinned down the escaping arctic hare.

The arctic hare was already injured, and after being attacked by the red fox, it barely struggled and was pressed down to the ground by the fox.

The wolverine and the old wolf immediately abandoned their own entrance, instinctively wanting to help the red fox.

But just as the wolverine left the entrance for a few seconds,

another arctic hare suddenly darted out from the entrance, much faster than the injured one!

Another one?!

The wolverine was startled upon hearing the commotion.

It didn’t expect that there was another arctic hare hidden there.

In a rush, the wolverine wanted to pin down the arctic hare.

But it was already too late.

At this distance, by the time the wolverine got there, with the hare’s speed, it would have escaped more than ten meters away!

But just when the wolverine regretted.

Whoosh!

A heavy sound of the wind breaking suddenly rang out!

Chen Wen made his move!

The long spear, straight and with a bit of prediction, pierced through the forest’s silence, accurately hitting the arctic hare trying to escape.

The entry of [Thorn] is triggered!

The spearhead easily broke through the hare’s fur, deeply embedding into its body, tearing muscles and organs, crushing bones, and finally penetrating out the other side, pinning the hare to the ground!

Full of momentum and strength!

This term describes Chen Wen’s attack perfectly!

The wolverine was relatively close to the arctic hare.

It suddenly realized that if Chen Wen were to target it, this would definitely kill it!

The wolverine couldn’t help but shrink its head.

”Be aware, there won’t be just one rabbit in this kind of burrow; they are smart animals. Next time, if you cooperate to hunt, make sure to pay attention to this point.”

Chen Wen spoke up, reminding the three animals.

Chen Wen planned to train these three animals to become a specialized hunting team for him, hunting these medium and small-sized animals.

Therefore, imparting some hunting skills and experiences was very necessary.

Upon hearing this, the three animals all responded and remembered Chen Wen’s reminder.

After waiting for a while to ensure there were no more rabbits,

Chen Wen left his position at the entrance.

First, he moved the bricks blocking the entrance and cleared away the burnt branches inside the hole.

Then, he retrieved the spear and held the dead rabbit in his hand.

Over there, the red fox had already killed its rabbit long ago.

This rabbit was also picked up by Chen Wen.

After collecting the rabbits, Chen Wen used an axe to clean the ground stained with rabbit blood.

Seeing his actions, the old wolf curiously asked, ”What are you doing?”

Chen Wen slowly explained: ”I don’t plan to disturb this group of rabbits for now, so I intend to clean up the bloodstains to avoid making them feel threatened and then relocate. Otherwise, it would be a big loss since the traps set here are still in place.”

”This is called a long-term approach, hoping to catch them all without them noticing!”

Upon hearing this, the old wolf thought for a moment.

A moment later, the old wolf said, ”I understand. It’s like our hunting. A herd of reindeer, each time we only catch an old, weak, sick one, then go find another herd, and wait for this herd to have old, weak, and sick ones again. We make a move again. Is this also a long-term approach?”

”Pretty much.”

Chen Wen nodded.

After cleaning up the bloodstains, Chen Wen finally left the area with the prey.

He planned to return to the shelter before dark to process the spearhead.

After all, the opportunity to hunt musk oxen could appear at any time, and he must seize the time!

...

While Chen Wen was contemplating taking advantage of the musk oxen herd.

Vinny, whom Liu Yu deemed stronger than Adam, was taking an interest in the deer herd.

Of course, not the moose herd.

But rather a reindeer herd.

North American Reindeer.

To be precise, it’s the North American woodland or forest reindeer.

This is a subspecies of reindeer inhabiting Canada’s forests, large in size, primarily gray in color.

This reindeer herd is not large, only about twenty or so.

However, they live in a huge swamp.

This should be a seasonal river, and as the temperature drops, the melted ice and snow from the surrounding high mountains decrease, and the flow of this river gradually reduces.

Eventually, this area became a vast swamp and a paradise for the North American reindeer.

Vinny discovered this herd while exploring upstream along the swamp.

As a relatively versatile survivor, when Vinny saw the reindeer, he planned to hunt them.

He brought his bow and arrows and could also create traps specifically targeting these reindeer.

There are quite a few hunting methods.

But whether they’ll work remains unknown.

”Any animal, once they form a group, the hunting difficulty skyrockets!”

Vinny whispered, lying behind a grass nest: ”This North American reindeer herd seems extremely dangerous to me! Looking at their strong bodies and large antlers, I definitely don’t want to be gored by one of those; that would hurt more than my grandma’s cookies!”

Saying this, Vinny took out his bow and arrows.

He’s also a participant equipped with a bow and arrow.

”I originally planned to use my bow and arrow to shoot the reindeer, but there are too many of them. If one arrow could hit and kill a reindeer, even if they got frightened and fled, I’d still feel it’s worth it.”

”But if I miss or don’t hit a vital area and a reindeer escapes, that’s not good news.”

Vinny was hesitating.

Hunting, especially in this survival competition,

is often better to do nothing than to make a mistake!

In these circumstances, the contestants’ margin for error is too low; one mistake could lead to total failure, which has happened before.

Thus, Vinny was very hesitant.

He worried that if he made a mistake, he would have no food, and might even lose his arrow.

If he angered this herd of reindeer, they might attack!

Of course, their aggression isn’t as strong as musk oxen, but it could still injure Vinny.

At this moment, Vinny found himself in a similar dilemma as Chen Wen.

However, soon, due to the North American reindeer’s less aggression compared to musk oxen, Vinny made a decision.

He decided to try shooting an arrow; even if he lost the arrow, he needed to at least attempt to hunt once.

If successful, his survival pressure would be greatly reduced, and his margin for survival would be significantly increased!

A gamble!
