Chapter 552: Chapter 51: North American Gray Wolf Attack

Chen Wen started to take action.

On the other side of the forest.

The Wolf Mink and the red fox were also searching for prey.

Ever since receiving guidance from Chen Wen, the two animals had begun to try cooperating.

However, so far, their success rate in cooperation was not high, still zero.

”Do you smell something?”

The red fox said as it moved nimbly through the bushes.

It almost didn’t brush against the leaves.

The Wolf Mink also carefully squeezed through the bushes, then said, ”I smell it, there’s the scent of prey, and it’s very strong.”

Hearing what the Wolf Mink said, the red fox immediately became alert.

It too, like the Wolf Mink, began sniffing the air, trying to locate the position of the prey.

A moment later, the red fox said, ”There is a scent, nearby, it seems to be...”

The red fox recalled in its mind the knowledge Chen Wen had taught them during spare moments, then said, ”Rabbits?”

”Yes.”

The Wolf Mink replied briefly.

Then, it started to take action.

As the Wolf Mink lowered its body and kept moving forward.

The source of the scent also appeared in its vision.

A group of Arctic hares.

Near the Arctic Circle on the shores of Great Slave Lake, these Arctic hares could be said to sustain the existence of small and medium-sized predators.

Even larger creatures like black bears, grizzlies, and gray wolves would hunt Arctic hares to supplement their food shortage.

The Wolf Mink was no exception.

However, instead of actively hunting Arctic hares, it preferred to snatch the prey of other animals.

Like lynxes.

Still, it does know how to hunt Arctic hares.

With the cooperation of the red fox, this hunt wouldn’t be difficult.

The Wolf Mink thought, turning to look at the red fox.

It lightly scratched the ground with its paw, conveying a message: Ready to hunt!

The red fox received the message, and following Chen Wen’s earlier guidance, it flanked around to the side to act as a wingman for the Wolf Mink.

Once the red fox was in position, the Wolf Mink began to move.

Using Chen Wen’s taught experience, the Wolf Mink crouched down, almost lying flat on the ground, slowly approaching.

This is the attack style of animals like tigers and cheetahs.

Though approaching stealthily, the small group of Arctic hares seemed to sense something.

The Arctic hare on sentry duty sat up, ears erect, apparently listening intently to the surroundings.

However, the Wolf Mink had already closed in to attack range.

Just as the hare sentry sensed something was amiss and tried to alert the group.

The Wolf Mink suddenly launched an attack.

It rushed towards the hares with a whoosh, letting out a whimpering cry to announce its assault.

The Arctic hares sensed the presence of the Wolf Mink, instantly scattering in all directions.

The Wolf Mink ignored the hares fleeing past it and fixated on the older, less agile hare for a fierce chase.

The chase lasted around twenty seconds.

Accompanied by a flying pounce from the Wolf Mink, the targeted old hare let out a wail and was pinned to the ground by the Wolf Mink.

Falling in a chase usually spells death.

With the Wolf Mink quickly locating the hare’s neck, it bit down heavily, ripping out the hare’s throat.

Suffocation and blood loss began to sap the hare’s life.

It let out a mournful cry before dying completely.

Meanwhile, on the other side.

When the Wolf Mink launched its attack, the red fox also found its target.

It lay ambushed in the bushes, motionless, as if it wasn’t there at all.

But when the Wolf Mink attacked and the hares scattered.

The red fox suddenly sprang into action, pouncing on a hare that ran near it.

It too exhibited strong hunting prowess.

With astonishing speed, it found the hare’s throat and bit down hard.

The hare, faced with this sudden ambush, also died quickly.

”We succeeded!”

The Wolf Mink couldn’t help but cheer, clutching the hare it killed as it sought out the red fox.

It lifted the hare like a trophy, very pleased with itself.

After all, the hare it bit to death was bigger than the one the fox killed.

The red fox wasn’t interested in competing with the Wolf Mink.

It licked the blood from its mouth and said, ”Eat one, take one back.”

”Alright, we’ll eat the big one.”

The Wolf Mink chuckled.

The red fox agreed as well.

The two animals tore into the larger hare, ripping it into roughly equal parts.

Then they started feasting joyfully.

However, engrossed in the delicious meal, the red fox and the Wolf Mink didn’t notice an uninvited guest slowly approaching.

The red fox was devouring the flesh and blood in big bites when it inadvertently glimpsed a shadow in the depths of the forest.

Ever-alert and crafty, it immediately sensed something amiss.

The red fox stopped eating, instinctively looking in that direction.

The Wolf Mink, confused, looked at the red fox: ”What’s wrong?”

”Something’s not right! Run!”

The red fox shrieked and bolted away.

And the shadow it had spotted seemed to materialize, swiftly emerging from the brush with a menacing presence.

Feeling the threat, the Wolf Mink instinctively wanted to fight.

But upon seeing the intruder clearly, it shivered uncontrollably.

Can’t win!

This was a grown North American gray wolf!

Though it seemed slightly awkward in movement, its massive body and bared fangs offered no allure for battle to the Wolf Mink.

Not even enough bravery to look at it a second time.

With wisdom, the Wolf Mink had no desire to risk its life.

It grabbed the uneaten rabbit, then ran frantically.

In the rear, the ambushing North American gray wolf let out deep howls, attempting to scare the Wolf Mink into dropping the rabbit too.

But the tenacious Wolf Mink, who would rather die eating, wouldn’t give up so easily.

It ran for its life, even catching up with the red fox, which had made an immediate escape.

The gray wolf, seeing this, decisively gave up the chase.

Its formidable presence abruptly waned.

It limped towards the partially devoured hare, and began to gorge on the remaining flesh.

...

”Did it... did it catch up?”

The red fox panted heavily, couldn’t help but glance behind.

Thankfully, it hadn’t followed!

The red fox let out a sigh of relief and halted the Wolf Mink.

The Wolf Mink released its grip, dropping the Arctic hare on the ground, then collapsed onto the hare, as if its bones had been removed.

”Tired...”

The Wolf Mink panted heavily, unable to say a complete sentence.

”That was close!”

The red fox was in better shape, as it was naturally adept at running away.

Once it settled a bit, it continued, ”When did that guy show up?”

The Wolf Mink shook its head with difficulty.

It didn’t know either.

Possibly the intense smell of blood and flesh prevented it from noticing the pursuing North American gray wolf immediately.

Because of this, not only had they lost the food they just obtained, but it had almost fallen prey to the wolf’s ambush.

This made the hot-tempered Wolf Mink quite angry.

After collecting its thoughts, it said, ”No way! I can’t stand it! I’m going back...”

”No, you can’t! We can’t beat it!”

The red fox said tensely.

The Wolf Mink heard this and did not retort.

It could take on a regular-sized adult gray wolf.

But this gray wolf’s size was obviously much larger, making the Wolf Mink a likely offering if it faced it head-on.

Thus, after some simple thinking, the Wolf Mink said, ”But I can’t swallow this defeat!”

”If we don’t deal with it, once it catches up to us, it could start taking our prey again, and we’d be powerless!”

”And if it follows us to our camp, it might attack us.”

”Therefore, I plan to go back and tell the humans!”

The Wolf Mink said seriously, ”Only humans might be able to subdue this big guy!”

This time, the red fox did not object.

It nodded and said, ”Let’s go! Go find the humans! This time, it’s not us causing trouble, the humans will definitely help us!”
