Chapter 553: Chapter 52: The Old Wolf

Meanwhile, in the forest.

Chen Wen collected all the traps he had set before.

The Arctic hares in this area were either dead or had escaped.

There were no more to be caught.

Therefore, he needed to find a new settlement of Arctic hares.

However, this was a task of luck.

Chen Wen was not in a hurry, he just took back all the traps here.

After collecting the traps, he took his long spear and began to look for new paths or traces left by the Arctic hares in the forest.

But after searching all morning, Chen Wen only found two suspected traces.

After setting up three groups of snare traps in the two areas, he returned to the shelter with the remaining traps.

I’ll check these traps again when I go out in the afternoon.

Chen Wen thought.

But just as he returned to the shelter, before Chen Wen could speak, the red fox and the wolverine rushed towards him as if they had seen a savior.

”Human! We ran into trouble!”

”This time it wasn’t us who caused trouble; it attacked us actively!”

Both animals said at the same time.

The wolverine also added angrily, ”It even took away my food! You have to help me!”

Listening to the two animals, Chen Wen felt a headache.

What’s going on?

Is there trouble again?

However, he did not blame the two animals but said gently, ”Don’t worry, speak one at a time.”

The wolverine glanced at the red fox, signaling it to speak.

The red fox placed the rabbit it had brought back in front of Chen Wen, then began to explain in detail.

”Simply put, we tried hunting this morning, and we caught two hares, but just when we were about to eat one and bring the other back, we were attacked by that guy!”

”Without any warning, it attacked us and even snatched one of our hares, if we hadn’t run fast, it would have taken this one too, or even us!”

These two guys got attacked?

And by a creature capable of possibly killing them?

Chen Wen frowned and asked, ”What kind of creature is that?”

This wolverine is very strong in combat; even predators like lynxes avoid it.

There are even videos online of it fighting with adult wolves and not being at a disadvantage even against several of them.

A beast that can make it fearful is not ordinary!

Soon, with the wolverine’s description, Chen Wen looked enlightened.

A large, adult North American gray wolf!

No wonder it could scare this guy away!

Chen Wen nodded, ”I’ve understood the specific situation. Since you’re not injured, I’ll go out with you this afternoon to find that creature; what do you think?”

Hearing that Chen Wen would stand up for them, the wolverine immediately became excited, ”Good! It’s decided then!”

Then it gritted its teeth and said, ”We must make that guy pay!”

...

In the forest.

The wolverine and the red fox led the way while Chen Wen followed behind them from a distance.

Soon, under the lead of the two animals, Chen Wen arrived at the spot where they hunted in the morning.

He sniffed the air, detecting the faint remnants of a scent.

The smell of blood was very faint, and there was no scent of a wild animal.

It seemed that the gray wolf had already left this place.

However, there were still some bloodstains on the fallen leaves on the ground, seemingly left by that hare.

While Chen Wen was assessing the situation.

The wolverine exclaimed, ”I smell the scent of that gray wolf!”

Hearing this, Chen Wen immediately walked over to the wolverine.

In terms of sense of smell, the wolverine was much stronger than him.

Now, with the wolverine’s strong olfactory perception, the traces of that gray wolf were revealed.

”Follow the scent to find it, and I and the red fox will follow behind you; be careful.”

Chen Wen advised.

This time, it’s not merely about understanding the situation.

It’s about either killing or driving off this lone wolf.

Having a lone wolf wandering around the shelter is not a good thing for Chen Wen.

And it’s also a significant threat to the wolverine and the others.

This time it didn’t kill the wolverine, but what about next time?

Therefore, Chen Wen brought his long spear this time, intending to deal with this gray wolf.

...

Under the guidance of the wolverine, the distance between Chen Wen and the gray wolf was decreasing continuously.

”It should be nearby; the scent here is very strong.”

The wolverine bared its teeth and said.

It had already entered combat mode.

Hearing this, Chen Wen also took out his long spear.

He scanned the surroundings, noting that here was a large open space in the woodland, not easily hiding animals.

Therefore, using his [Extreme Vision], Chen Wen kept searching for traces of the gray wolf.

The wolverine continued to keep its head down, looking for the gray wolf’s position.

As the scent grew stronger, Chen Wen, following behind the wolverine, suddenly changed his expression.

He shouted sharply, ”Be careful! Fall back!”

Hearing Chen Wen’s shout, the wolverine immediately turned its head and ran towards Chen Wen.

The next second, from the bushes not far ahead of the wolverine.

An adult North American gray wolf suddenly sprang out.

It tried to burst speed over the short distance to pin the wolverine down.

But the wolverine ran fast, and this wolf seemed injured, moving slower.

Moreover, Chen Wen had already warned the wolverine.

This allowed the wolverine to easily shake off this gray wolf attempting to attack it.

Seeing the wolverine return to his side safely, Chen Wen breathed a sigh of relief.

He quickly checked the wolverine’s body and found no injuries.

However, the wolverine was quite angry at this moment, baring its teeth and growling, continually provoking the gray wolf.

Chen Wen also took the opportunity to observe this North American gray wolf.

It was similar to the North American gray wolves he saw in the Yukon.

But this gray wolf was larger than the ones he had seen before, about the size of an alpha wolf.

Its fur was primarily gray and brown, with a very long body, possibly close to two meters, and very large, estimated by Chen Wen to weigh around seventy kilograms.

Just standing there, Chen Wen could feel a strong sense of oppression.

However, this North American gray wolf was not in peak condition.

Upon close observation, Chen Wen noticed its right hind leg seemed injured and quite severely.

This greatly affected its mobility.

Its movements were slower than a normal North American gray wolf.

This gray wolf’s fur was unlike the previous North American gray wolves they had seen, not sleek and shiny.

Instead, it carried a somewhat dilapidated gray hue.

Its fur was a bit droopy, visibly old.

Additionally, there were faint red patches between its gray fur.

It seemed to be bloodstains, appearing to be an injured old wolf.

Despite this, Chen Wen did not underestimate this North American gray wolf.

Aging wild animals may have limited stamina, but they have abundant experience.

Just now with the ambush, an average young wolf wouldn’t have waited that long.

This old wolf was very cunning.

Moreover, it was a special kind of animal.

Chen Wen observed this old wolf’s nature; like the red fox, it was cunning!
