Wilderness Survival with Druid System

Chapter 560: Chapter 59: The Short-Tailed Weasel Joins the Team!

The system made no sound, it seems this little fellow doesn’t completely trust me.

After all, it was picked up by me while in a state of rage.

Chen Wen shook his head but didn’t say much.

He let go of his hand, not worried that the little guy would run away.

Once free, the tiny creature shook its fur, turned to Chen Wen and said, ”So, what do you want?”

”There’s nothing much for you right now, Wolf Mink and I are looking for rabbits, you can join us.”

Chen Wen pointed at Wolf Mink and activated the small animal’s communication ability.

Wolf Mink glanced at the tiny creature and asked, ”How’s your nose? Can you smell rabbits from afar?”

The little creature shook its head: ”I don’t know what rabbits smell like.”

”What about hearing? Can you hear distant sounds?”

Wolf Mink asked.

The tiny creature shook its head again: ”I can hear things close by clearly, but not from far away.”

Wolf Mink hissed and finally asked, ”What about sight? Can you see movement from a distance?”

”Not bad, but I prefer moving at night, I’m not used to the day.”

The tiny creature replied.

Wolf Mink stopped asking, turning to Chen Wen and said, ”Hey, I mean, even if we’re short-handed, we can’t bring in a fool who can’t do anything, right?”

Before Chen Wen could reply, the tiny creature bared its teeth in anger: ”Who are you calling a fool? I catch birds! I catch mice! I’ve almost eaten all the birds and mice in this forest! Can you do that?!”

Birds?

Mice, too?

Chen Wen raised an eyebrow and thought of a kind of animal — a short-tailed weasel!

Judging by the looks, this little guy is quite like a short-tailed weasel.

Short-tailed weasels feed on small rodents and also eat amphibians, fish, birds, and insects.

The size is about the same as this little creature.

Their distribution is also quite widespread, from coastal beaches to remote high-latitude countries.

The northern part of North America is also one of the important habitats for short-tailed weasels.

And short-tailed weasels also change fur, turning pure white in winter, looking really cute.

Chen Wen thought, the more he looked, the more he felt this little thing was a short-tailed weasel!

If it’s a short-tailed weasel, then it wouldn’t be useful for daily work.

Short-tailed weasels are nocturnal, having difficulty getting used to daytime work, but if it’s nighttime work, then it’s perfect for them.

So, before the short-tailed weasel and Wolf Mink started fighting.

Chen Wen said, ”So, here’s the deal, I don’t plan on having you work during the day.”

Upon hearing this, the short-tailed weasel nodded slightly.

Working during the day would be torture for it.

”You’ll work at night, helping me keep watch around. If any dangerous animals approach, you’re responsible for signaling the camp animals.”

Chen Wen said, ”Also, help me keep an eye on the food to prevent mice from stealing it. Plus, you can catch mice around the camp to eat.”

In this area, there are still quite a few mice.

Especially during this nearing winter period, many rodent species are extremely active.

Chen Wen had noticed signs of mice activity around the camp over the past two days.

Hearing this, the short-tailed weasel nodded enthusiastically: ”Sure, I can do that! Just let me into your camp, any mouse that dares appear, I’ll bite them to death!”

The short-tailed weasel said, its sharp teeth gleaming coldly.

Chen Wen nodded and continued, ”Let’s talk about conditions. As long as you join us, we’ll take care of you. You can rest freely during the day, and we’ll ensure your safety.”

”Besides that, if you can’t catch any mice, I’ll provide you with food.”

He just estimated in his heart the short-tailed weasel’s food intake, and figured that if it only ate that much in a day, Chen Wen could spare some food from between his teeth to meet its food needs.

Raising a short-tailed weasel is much easier than a Wolf Mink.

This word made the short-tailed weasel immediately excited.

This condition is just perfectly tailored for it!

Without any hesitation, the short-tailed weasel immediately agreed to join Chen Wen: ”I’ll join you! Provided that what you said is true!”

”If not, I’ll leave immediately!”

Chen Wen squatted down and stretched out his right hand: ”It’s a deal!”

The short-tailed weasel was puzzled.

But under Chen Wen’s guidance, it placed its front paw on Chen Wen’s finger: ”It’s a deal!”

The short-tailed weasel joined Chen Wen, and at the same time, the system stirred.

Chen Wen opened the system and glanced at the entries provided by the short-tailed weasel.

[You have gained the recognition of a friend. Please extract the entries prepared by your friend for you.]

[Your friend — the short-tailed weasel, has prepared a gift for you.]

[Extracting... Extraction complete!]

[Please choose one of the following three entries]

[Nemesis of Small Rodents (Gold): You are better at catching small rodents, small rodents find it harder to detect your presence, and your traps are more likely to deceive small rodents]

[Remark: Catching mice, I’m the best in the world! — Short-tailed weasel]

[Bird Hunting Expert (Gold): It’s easier to locate birds, and it enhances agility when hunting birds]

[Remark: Catching birds, I’m still the best in the world! — Short-tailed weasel]

[Agile Posture (Gold): During combat, your spine becomes more flexible, your posture more agile, speed faster, and your reaction speed increases when you’re focused]

[Remark: Humph, this is my backup skill! You better cherish it! — Short-tailed weasel]

As expected, the entries provided by this little thing are really high quality!

Chen Wen looked at the three golden entries, his eyes wide open.

These entries are truly high quality!

The first [Nemesis of Small Rodents], although it limits rodent size,

But even as small rodents, they are distributed across all continents and oceans except Antarctica!

After all, the range of rodent species is just too vast!

But being small, it made Chen Wen hesitate a bit.

The second entry [Bird Hunting Expert] is even more absurd.

It directly includes all birds, making the scope even broader.

But this entry Chen Wen doesn’t really need, as humans mostly use traps to catch birds.

Speed-wise, it’s still a bit lacking.

Besides, it’s not difficult for humans to locate birds, so this entry is the first one Chen Wen eliminated.

As for the last one [Agile Posture], it’s just too good!

It’s the higher-level alternative to [Swift].

Furthermore, the more flexible spine significantly boosts Chen Wen’s combat abilities.

Human spines compared to those of weasel species are nowhere near as flexible.

Even if this entry can’t completely match the spine flexibility of weasels, even half of that would be quite sufficient!

Thus, this entry is currently what Chen Wen desires the most.

Finally, after hesitating for a long time between [Agile Posture] and [Nemesis of Small Rodents].

Chen Wen gritted his teeth and gave up [Nemesis of Small Rodents], choosing [Agile Posture].

After this survival stint, the old trio will need a complete overhaul!

Chen Wen looked at the [Agile Posture] that shimmered with a golden light in the entry library and thought to himself.

After selecting the entry, Chen Wen felt that the objectives of this outing were already overachieved.

However, it was still early, and not all the snare traps had been used yet.

He thought for a bit and decided to continue searching for rabbit gathering spots with the short-tailed weasel and Wolf Mink, setting up another batch of traps.

Using up all these traps.

Thus, after communicating with Wolf Mink, Chen Wen had Wolf Mink continue leading the way to look for rabbit gatherings.

As for him, he put the short-tailed weasel into the pocket of his jacket, letting it rest there.

Daytime activity is still quite challenging for the short-tailed weasel.

Chen Wen didn’t force it.
