Chapter 573: Chapter 72: Turning to Hunt Rabbits

After arranging for the Eagle to keep watch.

Chen Wen took a few animals to the northwest.

The rabbit traps were here, and he couldn’t return empty-handed.

Chen Wen walked with the small hunting group, also searching for materials to make stone spears.

The wood shelters all.

He was mainly looking for hard stones, like flint.

In the forest, flint is relatively common.

Before long, Chen Wen picked up a few suitable pieces of flint, perfect for making a long spear.

Chen Wen had made stone spears before.

That was back on the deserted island.

He used stones to strike flint, crafting it into spearheads, and hunted with them.

Making them again wasn’t difficult for Chen Wen.

After packing the flint, Chen Wen swaggered through the forest with the three animals.

Their combat power was enough to dominate this forest; most animals wouldn’t dare provoke them.

Soon, Chen Wen and the animals arrived at the place where the traps were set.

The traps were divided into two zones, the one closer to the camp was called Zone One, and the farther one was Zone Two.

He and the animals were in the Zone One area that the Eagle hadn’t scouted.

Here, Chen Wen only picked up one Arctic hare.

”It seems the rabbits’ activity paths have changed here, otherwise there wouldn’t be only one.”

Chen Wen said, planning to change the trap’s location.

But then the Wolf Mink and the red fox mumbled to each other and sought him out.

”I smelled rabbit and blood, very close, it must be hiding nearby!”

The Wolf Mink said confidently.

Hearing this, Chen Wen glanced at the surrounding rabbit holes: ”Forget it, these rabbit holes are interconnected and crisscrossed, catching a rabbit is tough.”

The Wolf Mink responded, ”True, but do you have a way to flush it out? If it comes out, I can bite it to death!”

”I do have a way.”

Chen Wen pondered for a moment, then said: ”Give me a moment, you go find where the rabbit is exactly.”

Hearing this, the Wolf Mink was immediately energized.

It quickly began searching for that injured rabbit among the rabbit holes.

Not long after, the Wolf Mink stopped at the entrance of a rabbit hole.

It sniffed deeply, as the smell of blood was strongest there.

”Found it! It’s over here!”

The Wolf Mink shouted to Chen Wen.

By this time, Chen Wen had already adjusted the trap and brought a heap of kindling over.

Seeing what he was holding, the three animals curiously gathered around.

”This... can flush out the rabbit?”

The Wolf Mink asked doubtfully.

The red fox thought a bit more, asking, ”Are you planning to throw rocks into the tunnel, knock the rabbit out, and then pull it out with the branches?”

Smart, but not quite.

The old wolf observed something: ”I don’t think it’s that simple, human, what are you planning?”

Chen Wen said, ”I’m not sure this method will work either, but it’s the simplest method for now.”

He came to the rabbit hole the Wolf Mink mentioned and examined it carefully.

At the entrance of the rabbit hole, the soil had a small patch of dark red.

This should be the blood left by the injured rabbit.

After a rough inspection, Chen Wen said: ”This is it, wait a moment, I’ll try to start a fire.”

Start a fire?

The three animals were now puzzled.

Is it possible to start a fire with this?

They had seen flames before; how could that terrifying thing be lit so easily?

”Flint was initially used for starting fires.”

Chen Wen said, picking up two pieces of flint: ”There are many ways to start a fire with flint, the first is striking two pieces of flint together to create sparks and ignite tinder.”

”The second is striking flint with an iron tool to create sparks and ignite tinder.”

”The second method is easier, but I want to try the first method now.”

Placing the two pieces of flint and the tinder together, Chen Wen began trying to start a fire.

He held the flint, placed it with dry grass, and struck hard.

Ka-chak!

As the flint struck together violently, sparks flew, hitting the dry grass.

The dry grass was ignited by the spark but didn’t catch fire due to insufficient heat.

”It’s working, but I need to be quicker.”

Chen Wen muttered, striking quickly and continuously.

Sparks kept flying, hitting the dry grass.

The sparks ignited the dry grass, which started curling, and soon, smoke began escaping from the grass.

Once it had burned sufficiently, Chen Wen took the smoking grass.

As he gently blew on it, more smoke appeared.

Finally, orange flames emerged from the grass, illuminating the faces of the animals around.

”Wow! That’s amazing!”

The Wolf Mink exclaimed in awe.

The red fox and the old wolf watched Chen Wen curiously.

They had seen so many miracles created by human hands.

”But how will fire flush the rabbit out?”

The red fox asked.

Chen Wen gave a mysterious smile: ”Don’t be impatient, watch what I do next!”

With that, he placed the tinder among the wood he had gathered.

The fire licked the firewood, gradually igniting it as flames began to rise.

Since the firewood Chen Wen collected wasn’t completely dry, the heat pushed out the moisture, producing a lot of smoke.

Chen Wen promptly placed the burning firewood into the rabbit hole and sealed it with stones.

”Go, watch for where smoke may appear.”

He didn’t let the three animals idle but had them watch for smoke.

The three animals couldn’t understand the reason behind this, but they followed Chen Wen’s directions obediently.

Sometime later, after looking around for a minute or so.

The sharp-eyed old wolf saw smoke rising.

”Smoke’s coming from here!”

The old wolf said, jogging to a hole.

Soon, the red fox also noticed, ”It seems to be here too, I’ll watch this one.”

Before it could finish speaking, the Wolf Mink excitedly said, ”Wow! Smoke here too! I’ll watch this!”

Chen Wen then found a fourth hole with smoke, staying there and watching a fifth smoke-emitting hole nearby.

”Cunning rabbit has more than three burrows; it has five here, it’s even craftier than a cunning rabbit!”

”Be attentive; the rabbit is likely to emerge from a smoke-filled hole, prepare to attack!”

Chen Wen said, gripping the long spear, ready to attack.

The three animals kept a keen watch on their respective burrow, following Chen Wen’s instructions, ready to pounce.

Soon, the animals’ ears twitched.

They heard a sound!

It’s the rabbit!

The injured rabbit was right under them!

It seemed to be entangled with something, anxiously moving within the burrow.

Could it be...

The red fox and old wolf felt a realization, glancing at the firewood Chen Wen stuffed in.

Could it be this?

Firewood... no, it should be the smoke!

The old wolf smelled the smoke, it was choking!

In a closed underground space, it couldn’t withstand it!

Realizing this, the old wolf was amazed at Chen Wen.

How did he come up with such a method?

If this method works, catching a rabbit would be effortless!

The old wolf looked at the red fox, both animals feeling a newfound appreciation for Chen Wen’s hunting method.

The Wolf Mink was ignored; it was nervously waiting at the hole, eager for the rabbit to emerge.
