Wilderness Survival with Druid System

Chapter 558: Chapter 57: Relocating Trap Positions

After resting for a night.

The next morning, after securing the fire starter, Chen Wen took weapons, food, and a bottle filled with cool boiled water before leaving the shelter.

At the same time, he also took the Wolf Mink with him.

The Wolf Mink has a very keen sense of smell.

If he wants to find a new area to set up traps, it can be of great help.

Therefore, the Wolf Mink was brought along by Chen Wen, while the Red Fox and North American Grey Wolf stayed home to rest.

After leaving the campsite,

Chen Wen decided to head north, a direction he seldom ventured.

He planned to try his luck to the north.

The Wolf Mink followed behind him cheerfully, sniffing the air from time to time.

”Remember, our main task this time is to find rabbits, especially areas with a lot of rabbits. Finding them would be a great achievement!”

Chen Wen said to the Wolf Mink.

The Wolf Mink nodded, becoming more focused.

Seeing the Wolf Mink getting into the zone, Chen Wen nodded in satisfaction, saying no more.

With the Wolf Mink leading the way, Chen Wen’s pace gradually quickened.

...

While Chen Wen was searching for new trap settings.

At the same time, ”Chicken Guy” Phil was also on the hunt for new trap locations.

His snare for chickens was quite effective, but chickens are not endless.

If snared too aggressively, the smart chickens would sense the threat and flee to other places.

Phil had also realized this.

After not yielding any results for three consecutive days, Phil decided to change his trap setting location.

However, due to his relatively resource-rich survival spot, it didn’t take much effort for Phil to find a new prey group.

It was still chickens.

”Ah! How come it’s still chickens!”

Looking at the gathering Canadian grouse ahead, Phil couldn’t help but complain.

But from his Wang Yousheng-like smirk, it was clear he was boasting!

Gregor couldn’t help but ridicule in his mind.

Nevertheless, Phil was truly skillful; his snare traps were ingeniously made.

Trapping small groups of chickens and rabbits was a guaranteed success!

Moreover, he was very adept at estimating the movement paths of these animals, making his traps precisely laid.

In summary, he’s quite a distinctive contestant.

Gregor watched Phil set traps for a while, nodding slightly.

As a virtual survival master, even he couldn’t find faults with Phil’s trap settings.

Switching screens.

Gregor stopped paying attention to Phil, thinking that if this guy’s luck continued, allowing him to constantly find chickens and rabbits,

he could actually last until the end.

However, his shelter was a rather conventional wooden structure, and quite crude in quality.

Faced with adverse weather, his shelter could be at risk of damage.

This was a hidden danger.

If his shelter were like Chen Wen’s, Gregor felt this guy could be a potential champion contender.

After all, the fowl hooked by Phil’s snares had plenty of fat and meat!

After all, it was autumn chicken.

...

As Gregor switched the screen back to Chen Wen.

In the forest, Chen Wen reached a never-before-explored zone.

”It’s just ahead!”

The Wolf Mink, who had been sniffing the air silently, finally provided insight.

Following behind the Wolf Mink, Chen Wen stopped, taking a moment to rest during this break.

He asked, ”Is there a lot?”

”Quite a few, it’s all rabbit’s scent!”

The Wolf Mink, also tired, curled up and sat beside Chen Wen to rest.

Chen Wen continued to ask, ”How far is it?”

”Not far, just ahead, about a half-hour walk or so.”

Gosh, and this isn’t far!

Chen Wen couldn’t help but think.

This also gave him a new appreciation for the Wolf Mink’s sense of smell.

To detect a rabbit’s scent from such a distance.

Chen Wen could only say: You’ll know if you cheat!

After resting for about five minutes, just as Chen Wen was about to let the Wolf Mink continue to lead the way and have a chat with the Arctic rabbits,

the Wolf Mink suddenly said, ”Wait, there’s another scent!”

Another scent?

Chen Wen was stunned for a moment, quickly asking, ”Is it something you can eat, or something that can eat you?”

The Wolf Mink bared its teeth, eat me?

It shook its head, saying, ”I don’t know, but it should not be something that can eat me. I rarely smell this scent, hmm...it’s somewhat similar to my kind.”

Same kind...

Chen Wen stroked his chin, pondering what other mustelid animals could be in the area.

But after much thought, he couldn’t figure it out.

Chances are, it could be another Wolf Mink.

However, if it were indeed another Wolf Mink, setting traps might become troublesome.

Such animals love to snatch others’ food.

If this Wolf Mink were far from the rabbit active area, all would be well; if close, Chen Wen felt the rabbits he snared would become the Wolf Mink’s free buffet.

So he asked, ”Is that scent far? How about from the rabbits?”

”Not very far, roughly at the same distance as the rabbits.”

The Wolf Mink answered honestly.

Upon hearing this, Chen Wen immediately decided, ”Then let’s move forward, while searching for rabbits, let’s also pay attention to the source of this scent. If it turns out to be your kind, we should try to drive it away. After all, we’ll set traps in this area; if it finds the traps, our prey could be seized by it.”

This reasoning was sound.

The Wolf Mink nodded continuously.

It was well aware of how it and its kind behaved.

Many times, they preferred to starve a bit than hunt actively.

And upon discovering someone else’s food, even without hunger, they’d bite it or urinate on it.

In short, for the Wolf Mink, others’ food was indeed delightful!

Now that it was time to proactively hunt, the Wolf Mink felt the need to ensure the safety of the prey.

...

With this thought in mind, the Wolf Mink continued to lead Chen Wen through the forest.

Finally, after half an hour, they arrived at a relatively flat area.

This place is good!

There’s got to be a lot of rabbits!

Chen Wen immediately recognized the clearing in the forest as a rabbit hotspot.

Upon a glance, he realized it was a lowland, an area where Arctic rabbits preferred to nest.

After checking carefully for a moment, Chen Wen found several burrows dug by Arctic rabbits.

Arctic rabbits have fairly sharp claws and are quite good at digging.

Based on the evidence, Chen Wen was convinced he was led to the Arctic rabbits’ main lair!

Being daytime, the Arctic rabbits were out foraging, rendering the burrows fairly empty.

After mulling it over, Chen Wen decided to inspect the burrow vicinity for remaining Arctic rabbits.

After a round of searching, he found none.

”It seems the Arctic rabbits aren’t homebodies; however, this works to my advantage.”

Discerning the Arctic rabbits’ tracks carefully, Chen Wen began to set traps.

He dared not set traps near the burrow, which could easily alert the rabbits.

Judging from the tracks, Chen Wen reckoned there was a substantial group of Arctic rabbits.

Conservatively estimated at around thirty!

Before winter’s onset, it’s rare for Arctic rabbits to form such a large group.

This expansive lowland, full of their nests, appeared quite magnificent.

Tracing the rabbits’ trail—animal path—Chen Wen set traps roughly two hundred meters from the lowland.

Even if an Arctic rabbit got caught and screamed fiercely,

the rabbits at the burrow would be unlikely to detect the situation.

After setting three traps, Chen Wen extended the traps further along the path.

About an hour later, Chen Wen patted his pocket.

He had placed nearly two-thirds of his snare traps.

The task was more than halfway complete.

Chen Wen stood up, looking towards the Wolf Mink that had been following him: ”Let’s go and check if your kind is in this area.”
