My Alleged Husband

Chapter 297: Chapter 277: Yichen Intervenes_1

Xia Jing was so infuriated by Zhang Zhentian that she truly didn’t know what to do. Even the personal intervention of her father-in-law was in vain, so what else could possibly bring her husband back? Was she really going to personally destroy the marriage she had worked so hard to build over the years? She was extremely angry now. Why did she have to tell that lie? If it weren’t for the lie, would things not have turned out this way? Sadly, there is no antidote for regret in this world. What is done is done, and no matter how much she regretted it afterward, nobody would repeatedly pay for her mistakes, because ultimately she had to bear the responsibility for her own errors.

She couldn’t bear the thought of the marriage she had worked so hard to build being destroyed by her own hands. She had to fight back; she couldn’t allow herself to lose this marriage, to lose Zhang Zhentian. Xia Jing felt as if the whole world had darkened without him. No matter how outrageous the circumstance, she never wanted to lose Zhang Zhentian.

Old Master Zhang in the study upstairs had heard Zhang Zhentian’s resolute decision. Even Old Master Zhang himself hadn’t anticipated that his son could do something so ruthless. He loved Xia Jing so much that he would renounce even his own father for her. Yet today, he had pushed away the woman he loved with his own hands.

In fact, Old Master Zhang knew very well that he was harboring selfish desires when Xia Jing came asking him to persuade Zhang Zhentian. He did not want his son to continue living with his daughter-in-law. At that moment, he had dearly hoped his son would heartlessly reject him and not agree to carry on with Xia Jing. However, now that everything had turned out as he wished, he felt uneasy. If this was truly the result of his innermost desires being granted by fate, was what he had done correct? Was he really willing to destroy his son’s happiness for life? No matter what his child had done to him, at his core, he was still a father. It was only because his son had chosen the wrong path originally that he had ended up here. Why couldn’t he offer him a road to return, to move forward? Why did he keep pushing his son towards a dead end?

Zhang Zhentian, after hanging up the phone, just sat alone in the living room, staring blankly. His heart ached tremendously. He had never thought that one day he would truly part ways with the woman he loved most, especially after more than a decade of life together. He didn’t know whether what he had done was right or wrong. In his heart, he wished for the woman he loved to live a happy and joyful life, but today he had personally buried her happiness. Could it really be correct what he had done? But should all the blame be placed on him? Xia Jing had made many mistakes and never reflected on whether she was the problem, always shifting the blame onto him. Indeed, his heart had gone cold.

Since her father-in-law could not persuade her husband to change his mind, perhaps her son might, thought Xia Jing. But how could she face asking her son for this? After all, everything that had happened, all the turmoil, had been sparked by her sudden return to the country.

After much deliberation, she eventually dialed her son’s phone number. She felt that perhaps her last hope lay with her son, Zhang Yichen.

Zhang Yichen saw that the incoming call was from his mother, and he really didn’t want to answer it. But out of politeness, he still chose to pick up, as for the ultimate purpose, he didn’t want to get into that.

”Hello, may I ask why you’re calling me? If there’s nothing important, then I’m going to hang up. I’m quite busy here and don’t have time to chit-chat!” Zhang Yichen’s tone was cold as he started speaking, which greatly displeased Xia Jing!

”What kind of tone is that? I’m your mother. Is that how you speak to your elders? Do I even exist in your eyes as your mother? No matter what I do, I will always be your mother—a fact recognized by law and one that can’t be changed by blood. You should at least show some basic respect when you speak to me—I still deserve that much!” Xia Jing yelled at Zhang Yichen!

”Now you remember you’re my mother, but when you abandoned me, did you think about it? Did you consider your son then? I don’t want to dig into the past anymore, but I can’t forgive either, as one wrongdoing of yours has followed another. You should realize that just because I haven’t lost my memory, I’m not ignorant of what you’ve done. I understand all your actions. Often, I don’t point them out to leave us both some dignity and to avoid embarrassment. But I hope you understand what’s the purpose of me giving you that space? I hope that you would stop yourself, that you wouldn’t compound your mistakes because that is of no benefit to you. After all, the human heart is made of flesh. Seeing me hurt, I know it’s hard for you as a mother. But I hope when you act, you could consider me too. If seeing your child hurt makes you feel bad, then why do you keep injuring someone else’s child? Wouldn’t other parents feel heartbroken? You must have a reason for calling me today, so just say it. Don’t beat around the bush!”

”I was wrong earlier, Mom shouldn’t have yelled at you right away. There is a very important matter now, Mom needs your help. Your dad wants to divorce me; can you please talk to him and ask him not to divorce me? I know I’ve made many mistakes, and that none of them can be forgiven by you all, but I’m begging you—I’m a woman too, I need my marriage, I need the company of a husband; I can’t be without him. Child, if you still acknowledge me as your mother, please help me. Your grandfather has tried persuading your dad, but it had no effect. Perhaps you are the only one who can help me now—Mom is begging you...”

Zhang Yichen had not anticipated his father, Zhang Zhentian, would be so heartless as to want a divorce from his mother. As their son, it seemed wrong to persuade, yet also wrong not to be involved. He knew there had to be more to it than met the eye, likely some secrets he, as a junior, shouldn’t outright ask about. He wanted to let things take their natural course: he didn’t want to help Xia Jing in persuading Zhang Zhentian. He wanted her to taste the consequences, to pay for her actions. However, when he heard Xia Jing’s pleading voice, he couldn’t bring himself to be callous toward his mother. After all, she was the one who gave birth to him. Could he really be so heartless? If he acted in that way, how would he be any different from them? Just another ruthless person. Is that really what he wanted to become? He didn’t want that.

”Alright, I promise you!”
