My Alleged Husband

Chapter 283: Chapter 263 Longing Day and Night_1

Over the following days, Zhang Yichen was visibly dispirited. A discerning person would have been able to tell what was on his mind, but those around him did not know who he was pining for each day with such heavy thoughts. They did not know about his past; they did not understand that he was someone who had lost his memories. They only knew him as a tycoon of the world economy, there in the United States to discuss business and negotiate deals.

Every day, he eagerly awaited a reunion with that girl, thinking about her from dawn to dusk, hoping he could one day see her again. Ever since he and Ran Zhihan parted at the airport last time, visions of her retreating figure would occasionally flash across his mind. He felt this figure resembled the one from his dreams intensely, but why had he lost his memory? Why couldn’t he remember the past? It was deeply troubling for him, torn between a new love he had just fallen for and the most important person in his dreams. Who should he choose?

Zhang Yichen paced restlessly around his lodgings. He instructed his secretary to discreetly investigate the girl he had met, but he didn’t know how to broach the subject, worrying whether his actions might make his assistant see him as a stalker. Could it make the world laugh at him as a hypocrite?

Lost in aimless torment, he was in pain. He just wanted to end this torment soon so he could live his life quietly. Why was it so hard? As soon as he closed his eyes, all he could see was her silhouette; when he closed his eyes, he saw her radiant smile. Why was this happening? Had he really fallen too deep?

”Oh, heavens, what do you want me to do? Can’t you just show me a clear path? I don’t want to keep waiting aimlessly for someone; I also don’t want to lose the person I love now because of it. Please tell me, how should I act to not hurt either girl, to not hurt anyone?” Zhang Yichen didn’t know what to do anymore. He could only plead to the heavens, hoping they would point out a clear way to end this excruciating dilemma.

He thought that if he prayed sincerely, the heavens would definitely show him a clear path to choose, but despite his waiting, he never received an answer from above.

Meanwhile, Ran Zhihan was also missing Zhang Yichen. She didn’t know when she would meet the boy she had encountered before. She just hoped to reunite with him soon, having already fallen for him at first sight, unable to extricate herself, sinking ever deeper. This infatuation was harmful to her, yet she couldn’t control it, and kept tumbling further.

Like Zhang Yichen, with every closed eye, they saw each other’s silhouettes, each other’s radiant smiles. She was on the verge of breaking down. The days were unbearable, the torment too painful. She didn’t want to go on like this anymore, but would the heavens really let her off the hook?

”Oh, heavens, please tell me, should I fall in love with that man? Does he, like me, deeply indulge himself in these feelings? I know all things are destined long ago, but I still want to defy fate to be with him because being with him makes me happy. Will you bless our union? If so, please don’t let it rain tonight!”

Ran Zhihan was truly too naive. Even if the heavens heard her prayers, they wouldn’t intervene, because the heavens are always fair.

Although the two of them were in different places, their thoughts were almost exactly the same. Perhaps this was destiny!

Zhang Yichen couldn’t sleep, so he made a late-night call to Old Master Zhang. He wanted to have a good chat with his grandfather, wondering why things always seemed so hard.

Old Master Zhang, groggy and half-asleep, saw the caller ID showing his grandson and really didn’t want to answer the phone. But he couldn’t just ignore it. After he picked up the call, he groggily said to his grandson, ”Yichen, what’s the matter this late at night? Aren’t you still jet-lagged? It’s daytime over there and night over here. Have you forgotten?”

Zhang Yichen thought for a moment and then said to Old Master Zhang, ”Grandpa, I’m sorry, I really forgot. I kept thinking it was daytime there. You go back to sleep then, and I won’t disturb you anymore. We can talk about anything tomorrow...”

”It’s alright. Just tell me what’s on your mind. If I can help you, I definitely will!”

”Grandpa, I want to know, do people with amnesia truly forget their past? If a person recovers their memory, will they forget the person they’ve been spending time with while they had amnesia?” Zhang Yichen asked.

”My child, I don’t quite know how to explain it to you, but I hope you remember this: the heavens are fair. If they take something away from you, they will compensate you in another way. It might not seem the best for you now, but it could be of greatest help to you later. Whatever you have, don’t just cast it aside, because that will only make regret harder to bear,” Elder Zhang explained. ”Perhaps you have lost your memory now, perhaps you have forgotten those past events, and perhaps you don’t remember whether you ever had a girlfriend. Perhaps you’ve forgotten what the girl in your dreams looks like and who she is, but Grandpa hopes you understand. If you have lost her, then you will meet someone very much like her. Child, never complain about how unfair the heavens are to you, because the heavens are always fair. They won’t let the wicked get away with their crimes forever, nor let those who do evil linger in society. Grandchild, Grandpa only hopes you remember that in this cruel society, complaining is futile. Only by making yourself stronger can you stand firm in this society and protect those you want to protect, those you love. Never dwell on how bad others are to you, or how unfair they are, because that won’t bring joy to your heart. You are a good, kind child, and Grandpa understands what you need and what you despise. Yet, you choose to remain silent about so many things. You just don’t want to hurt your grandpa, nor your parents. You want to protect them. But is the way you protect them truly without mistake? Because you keep cleaning up their messes over and over, they come to take it all for granted and don’t appreciate you at all. Do you think that’s fair to you?”
