My Alleged Husband

Chapter 251: Chapter 231 Where Does Fairness Come From?_1

Li Jiayuan knew that no matter what she said, it would be of no use; she understood that once Jiayuan made up her mind about the girl in front of her, no one’s words would likely change her decision unless the person involved could explain clearly to persuade her, there might still be a glimmer of hope. She really didn’t want her nephew to lose such a good wife. She knew that it was truly hard to find a girl like her in this world—so kind, so pure, willing to give up her own life for her family. How many people like that girl are there in society?

”Have you really thought it through? This is not the first time I’ve asked you today. Every answer you’ve given me has been the same. Are you sure you can let him go? Can you abandon him? You think you can bury your love for him in your heart, never to surface again, but won’t he do the same? Wouldn’t his heart ache unbearably because of your departure? Why do two people who love each other choose to hurt each other by leaving? It’s not just hurtful for you, it’s especially painful for him. If a man can spoil a girl to the heavens, then it proves that she is the apple of his eye, that he cherishes her as his own life. Why won’t you give him a chance? His mother’s decisions have nothing to do with him. All of this was caused by his mother, so why should he take responsibility for her actions? Hasn’t his mother already said she would turn herself in at the police station? Isn’t that enough in your eyes?”

Li Jiayuan truly couldn’t understand why her earnest persuasion was ineffective, and why Ran Zhihan remained indifferent despite her long efforts.

”I’ve made up my mind. No matter how many more times you ask me, my answer will be the same. I’ve thought it through. I don’t want him to bear the consequences of the wrongdoings committed, I just want him to realize that a relationship isn’t just about two people, it’s about two families. In his eyes, he might only care whether we would be happy together, and although I feel exactly the same, our parents see it differently. In their eyes, a relationship involves two families, not just two individuals secretly deciding to spend their lives together. I never fully grasped this concept until I lay here in the hospital. I’ve come to understand that what my parents said wasn’t unreasonable. Do you know? My parents never stopped me from dating him. I believe they let me date him not because he comes from a wealthy family, but because they value his character. However, his parents always believe that I am with him for his wealth, power, and status. Am I really that materialistic? If I was after superficial glory, then why wouldn’t I accept the pursuit of other wealthy young men? I’m not heartless. I just want them to understand that I will repay those who treat me well a thousandfold, but for those who treat me poorly, even if I forgive them, there will never be any further emotional progress in this lifetime!”

”I know that whatever I say now is useless, so let’s have him come in and talk to you himself!” Li Jiayuan finished speaking and called Zhang Yichen, who had been listening clearly from outside.

Li Jiayuan walked out.

Ran Zhihan did not expect Zhang Yichen to come to her: ”Why are you here? I thought you’d stay home quietly for a few more days. I didn’t expect you to come here so soon.”

”If I don’t come, how much longer were you planning to keep me in the dark? Have you really planned to break up with me like this? Can so many years of affection really be so vulnerable?”

”I didn’t feel that our relationship couldn’t withstand a single blow, I just felt that being with you, it’s very exhausting for me. To be with you, people who love me keep getting hurt, and those I care about have nearly lost their lives time and again because of me. To you, it might not seem like much, but for me, it’s different. They are my family, my blood relatives. How can I bear to see them almost lose their lives over and over again because of me? I’m not that kind of person, you know that. From the very first day you knew me, you should have understood what kind of person I am. If the life of my loved ones has to be exchanged for our happiness and future together, then I would rather not have it. Do you think, if my parents lost their lives because of our happiness, we could still talk about happiness in our lifetime together? At that time, we would only live together in loneliness. Even if we were there for each other, what would forever linger in our hearts is guilt. A marriage filled with guilt cannot be a happy one.”

”So you’re really going to abandon me like this? What do all these years of feelings mean to you?” Zhang Yichen couldn’t accept it.

”To be honest, I’m grateful for your love over the past ten years, and I’m glad to have met you. Meeting you in this life has been my greatest fortune; do you know that? I love you so much, but sometimes love can’t be eaten as food. You can’t selfishly let others pay with their lives for your own path of love. What meaning does such love have? Maybe you can be heartless towards your parents, but I can’t. After all, they are your parents.”

”Ultimately, it’s because my mother did those things that hurt your parents, right? She already admitted her mistakes and turned herself in at the police station, didn’t she? You chose to forgive her at the beginning. Since you forgave her, why do you want to take revenge on me like this? Don’t you think it’s cruel to repay the hurt my mother caused you in full upon her son?”

”Can’t I take my revenge on you for the things your mother did? As the saying goes, ’the son pays for the father’s debts.’ If a son can repay the debts of the father, then why can’t he also repay the debts of the mother? Yes, I want to repay the hurt she caused my parents in full upon you, because only then can she understand the agony of losing one’s kin. In their eyes, they think just because they are mercenaries, they can do whatever they want, never caring for the feelings of others. If that’s the case, why should I continue to show any courtesy and treat them kindly?”

”That was my mother’s fault; it has nothing to do with me. Why are you blaming her mistake on me? Is that fair to me?”

”Now you talk to me about fairness? Then let me ask you, our relationship—your mother blaming all her mistakes on my parents, is that fair? Because of our relationship, my parents have been hurt by yours time and again. Is that fair?”
