My Alleged Husband

Chapter 290: Chapter 270 Speak the Truth_1

”Husband, don’t be so sad, look, I’m fine now, aren’t I? You have to believe me, even if it’s severe depression, as long as you’re by my side, I’m sure there will come a day when I get better. You shouldn’t be too pessimistic either, as long as you can stay with me, whatever happens in my life, I have enough...” Xia Jing tried to manipulate Zhang Zhentian, she wanted Zhang Zhentian to believe that her illness had naturally improved because of his companionship.

”Wife, I’m sorry, I haven’t taken good enough care of you. We’ve shared the same bed for so many years and I didn’t even realize you were suffering from depression. It’s my failure as a husband for not fulfilling my responsibilities, letting you endure so many years of suffering alone. Believe me, I will always be by your side from now on, never leaving you. I will wait for the day your condition improves, no matter how long it takes. Wife, let’s not delve into the past anymore. Let’s live our future happily, courageously face our own demons, and confront the difficulties before us. I believe that as long as we are willing to face them openly, we can definitely overcome your illness, and I can surely make you better!” Zhang Zhentian thought Xia Jing’s words were meant to comfort him, as he did not want his sick wife to have to comfort him, an oblivious husband.

”I believe you, I believe with your companionship, I can definitely get better. Let’s not talk about the past anymore, we need to look forward, only by looking forward can we know what path we should take in the future!”

”My dear, you are truly the woman I love the most in this life. Please, don’t hurt me with any more lies. My heart can’t take any more damage, do you understand? If I get hurt again because of the lies you’ve told, I really won’t be able to accept it. If there are any lies you’ve told that I don’t know about, I hope you can tell me the truth. Don’t wait for me to find out your lies, because if I do discover them, I won’t expose them. It would cause both you and me pain...”

Xia Jing was shaken after hearing Zhang Zhentian’s words. She very much wanted to tell her husband the truth about her feigned illness, but she didn’t know how to say it. What would be the consequences if she did? He had just made it so clear that he could not take any more pain. Should she still reveal the cruel truth to him, that as a wife, she had once again deceived him? How could he accept it if she said it out loud?

”Dear, I know, a person won’t always avoid making mistakes. Making mistakes isn’t scary, what’s scary is not having the courage to admit them, not having the courage to honestly tell others about the mistakes you’ve made. Wife, let’s not deceive each other anymore. I don’t want to live the second half of my life under a marriage filled with lies. I know you’ve hidden a lot from me in the past, and I know all about it. Do you know how I feel when I find out you’ve been keeping things from me? I toss and turn at night unable to sleep, wondering why you need to hide those things from me. Aren’t you my wife? If you really consider me as your husband, why wouldn’t you tell me those things? Our marriage wasn’t easy to come by, we both have given so much and been through so much hardship. I don’t want our marriage to be ruined by any means. Shouldn’t a hard-won marriage be cherished even more? Why should we keep hurting each other’s feelings, damaging our hard-won marriage over and over again? I know you’ve been testing me with many things, but please I beg you, stop these tests, because if you keep testing me, I won’t be able to take it. Every test requires a huge amount of emotional strength to endure...”

Xia Jing watched as Zhang Zhentian spoke, getting close to tears. She couldn’t bear it and finally decided to tell him the truth about her pretending to be ill.

”Husband, there’s something I want to tell you, but I hope you won’t get angry, and don’t doubt me because of it!”

”Go ahead and say it!”

”Actually, when you overheard me saying at my brother’s doorstep that I had severe depression, that was a lie. I’m not sick at all. I said I had severe depression to deceive him. You’re not mad, are you?”

Zhang Zhentian was stunned; he had not anticipated that his wife’s illness was entirely fabricated. He simply could not imagine what else his wife might have done behind his back.

”Is that true? Are you really not sick?” Zhang Zhentian couldn’t believe the words his wife had spoken. He wanted to make sure once again that he had not misheard, but the answer only disappointed him.

”Yes, I know you’re asking to confirm whether you heard wrong. I’m telling you now, you didn’t. I’m indeed not ill; my claim of having severe depression was completely made up by me!”

”I can hardly believe it. Are you still the same Xia Jing I knew, the woman I loved with all my heart? Why would you do this? Lie after lie, aren’t you exhausted? I really want to ask you: I heard clearly when I was at your brother’s house. He gave you a chance to come clean. He asked you if you were really sick or if it was a lie. Even when given an out, why did you continue to lie? Why didn’t you just be honest with us?” Zhang Zhentian was furious; he couldn’t accept that his wife had used illness to deceive him. Didn’t she know how terrified he was of her being sick?

”Believe me, when I say this, I have my reasons. I didn’t mean to, truly!”

”Enough, stop talking. Whatever you say now is meaningless. A mistake is a mistake. Do you realize that one lie leads to ten more to cover it up? And after your ten lies, how many more will you need to cover those up? Do you understand? Once a lie is told, it becomes a monumental deceit. You never consider things from anyone else’s perspective. Do you know how scared I was standing at his doorstep, fearing what you said was true? And when you came back, instead of being honest with me, you comforted me with lies. From the moment you walked in, you wouldn’t speak the truth. If I hadn’t confronted you, would you have continued to hide the truth from me? Do you have any conscience left? I am your husband, the man you’ve shared a bed with for over a decade. How could you be so heartless to deceive me, time and again? Doesn’t it pain me? You are my wife, my life partner. Why can’t you, from the perspective of a wife, consider my feelings? Do you know how much your actions have hurt me? Since this has happened, there’s nothing more to say. I think it’s time for us to take a break from each other...”

Having said his piece, Zhang Zhentian walked out. He didn’t take anything except his wallet, his cell phone, and his passport. He wanted to find a place to stay outside. He no longer wanted to live under the same roof as his wife; he felt it would suffocate him! Xia Jing had not expected that this time she had truly driven her husband away!
