My Alleged Husband

Chapter 162: Chapter 146 Heading to the United States!_1

Xiao Wei left Li Jiayuan’s house and didn’t return until evening. When he got home, Li Jiayuan came over to him and said, ”Dear, you’re back. You must be tired. Shall I draw a bath for you? Oh, have you had dinner? How about I make something for you to eat first?”

Looking at Li Jiayuan’s eager-to-please demeanor, Xiao Wei said to her, ”Now you remember to speak kindly to me? Where were you when your father was talking about me like that, trampling over my self-esteem? Why didn’t you stand up for me then?”

Li Jiayuan was at a loss for words, stammering, ”Dear, please don’t mind it. I didn’t know what to say to my father at the time, which is why I didn’t stand up for you. Can you please not be mad at me? Let’s live well together in the future. I’ve made up my mind, I’ll take Nian Jun with me to the United States with you. If my father doesn’t want to go with us, we’ll leave him here and send him living expenses every month. What do you think?”

Hearing Li Jiayuan’s proposal, Xiao Wei thought it was not bad and said to her, ”The proposal is good, but I don’t know if your father will agree. You know what kind of person he is. Honestly, I really want to tell your father something true: Treating people like that, trampling on others’ self-esteem, will only make others despise him more; it will make people think he’s the one who’s truly lacking in upbringing. But out of respect for him being your elder and your father, I restrained myself. However, I hope he can gain some self-awareness and realize the hurt his actions can cause others. Not everyone will tolerate him as I do, and I do so because he is my father-in-law and you are my wife, his own daughter. If I were just an ordinary person, I would definitely not tolerate such treatment from him. You should know, being a mercenary, I have a myriad of ways to retaliate. And you know, if I were to retaliate, it would be relentless, and he certainly couldn’t withstand even a fraction of my revenge. However, I haven’t done so. I still treat him as my elder, but he hasn’t treated me like a son-in-law, which is deeply unsettling to me.”

Li Jiayuan wanted to tell Xiao Wei that her father had realized his mistake upon hearing his words. But seeing Xiao Wei’s angry expression, she wasn’t sure where to begin.

Seeing that Li Jiayuan wasn’t speaking, Xiao Wei said to her, ”I still hope you could ask your father once more. If he is willing to go to the United States with us, I would welcome it, but I don’t want him to trample on my self-esteem at will in the future. Nor do I want him to continue looking down on me. Jiayuan, I’ve always wanted to ask you a question, did you, like your father from the very beginning, think I’m a person who would accomplish nothing, that I would never succeed or amount to anything in life? If so, then I’m sorry to disappoint you. You never expected that my achievements could be so great, that within a short year, I could establish such a powerful company in the United States. Do you know why? Because my thinking is more advanced than yours. Unlike you, who are forever only aware of money, my team in the United States relied entirely on my disbanded brothers who stood by me and supported me. You might think that I haven’t been by your side this past year, giving you nothing, and haven’t even lived up to my duties as a husband. But I hope you understand that this year, you haven’t helped me either. I understand how difficult it was for me to start a business in the United States, and I believe your father can empathize, having walked the same path. But I never imagined he would treat his son-in-law this way for the sake of money. Fortunately, it was me today. If it were someone else, who knows, they might have divorced you and abandoned you and the child. But I would never do that because my heart truly holds you, my child, our home, genuinely viewing your father as my father. But I don’t want your father to always be wary of me; it’s truly unnecessary, you know?”

Li Jiayuan nodded desperately upon hearing Xiao Wei’s words and said to him, ”Dear, I understand, please don’t be angry. My father didn’t do it on purpose; he didn’t mean to tread on your self-esteem. He was just afraid of me suffering alongside you in the United States. He just didn’t want Nian Jun and me to suffer too. Please forgive him! Can’t you be the bigger person and disregard the offense? You know my father’s life has been really hard. I can’t bear to leave him here alone while we go to the United States. That would be too cruel to him, you know. In this life, I really long for nothing else. All I wish for is that the people I care about, love, and who love me can live safely and happily. I don’t ask for how much money you have, how accomplished you become, or how much fame you achieve. All I ask for is that you stay with me safely for a lifetime. I am not a woman who is greedy for money. I was controlled by greed for a moment with that cooperation deal, which is why I said those things to you. I hope you can forgive me and not hold it against me. I truly realize my mistake, dear.”

Li Jiayuan, while speaking, began to cry. Xiao Wei extended his hand and took Li Jiayuan into his arms, gently stroking her hair. He said to Li Jiayuan, ”It’s okay, it’s okay. I’m not angry with you all. I just don’t want you, as my family, to look down on me because in my mind, I believe family should understand and help each other, not trample on each other’s self-respect at will. Can you understand that? Actually, you also know that I, Xiao Wei, am not an unreasonable person. But I have my pride. I have my self-respect. And my self-respect is not something that others can trample on at will, not even if the person is my father or mother. So, I won’t apologize to you for this matter, because I’ve done nothing wrong.”

Listening to Xiao Wei’s words, Li Jiayuan felt that what he said made a lot of sense. She said to Xiao Wei, ”I know, I know, in this matter, you are not at fault in the slightest. It’s just my father’s problem. But I hope you can try to think from my father’s perspective too. Could you? Don’t just abandon my father here by himself!”

Xiao Wei remained silent for a long time. Seeing that Xiao Wei didn’t say anything, Li Jiayuan didn’t know what to do.

At this moment, Li Haixiao stepped out from the side, walking slowly with the aid of a cane towards Xiao Wei. He said to Xiao Wei, ”Xiao Wei, I’m sorry, this matter was not thoroughly considered by your father. I shouldn’t have trampled on your self-respect. I hope you will allow me to go to the United States with you. If I go, I won’t cause any trouble. As for Li Corporation, you can merge it into your company. I believe your management skills will surely make it thrive, and it won’t just disappear. I don’t want anything now. I don’t want to look down on you anymore. My only hope now is that you would let me go to the United States with you all. I want to live there with you. I want to live with my grandson Nian Jun. I don’t want to leave him like this. I’m over fifty now and don’t have many years left. I hope you can let me live the rest of my years happily with my family, okay?”

Xiao Wei originally wanted to rebut Li Haixiao a few times, but seeing the pleading look in Li Jiayuan’s eyes as she looked at him, he couldn’t say it. He said to Li Haixiao, ”I hope you won’t trample on my self-respect like this in the future. I just hope you can trust me. Trust that I won’t wrong your daughter, I won’t wrong you, and I won’t fail you or Jiayuan. That’s enough for me. Since you’ve agreed to go to the United States, then let’s go together. I will find a time to set the itinerary, so let’s agree on this. I’m a bit tired now. I’m going to sleep.”

After Xiao Wei finished speaking, he walked upstairs. Li Jiayuan quickly followed him. Though Li Haixiao felt somewhat reluctant, he was still very happy, after all, Xiao Wei had forgiven him, and he could continue living with the people he cared about.
