My Alleged Husband

Chapter 160: Chapter 144: The Superior Man Ignores the Misdeeds of the Petty Man_1

Li Haixiao, angered by Xiao Wei, went upstairs alone. Li Jiayuan looked at Xiao Wei standing in front of her and felt that he was incredibly strange, so unfamiliar. Xiao Wei seemed to notice Li Jiayuan staring at him and said with a grin, ”What’s wrong, dear? Why are you staring at me like that? Do you think I’ve gotten handsomer than before?”

Xiao Wei was about to reach out and pull Li Jiayuan towards him, but she quickly dodged his outstretched hands and stepped back a few paces. Xiao Wei, puzzled by Li Jiayuan’s behavior, asked her, ”Jiayuan, what do you mean by this? I’m not going to bite; why are you avoiding me?”

Li Jiayuan shook her head and looked up at Xiao Wei, ”Since when did you become like this? You have a company in the United States; you could have told me. Oh! Right, I remember now, you told me before that you had a company in the United States, that you wanted to take me with you to America. But I never thought you would speak to my father in that tone today. Do you still see him as my father, as your elder? No matter what, during the year you were away, that old man took care of your wife and your son. You’re not unaware that my father has suffered from uremia before. Do you think it’s appropriate for you to act like this?”

Xiao Wei hadn’t expected Li Jiayuan’s reaction to be so intense. He had been wondering why Li Jiayuan was angry with him and why she had dodged when he tried to hold her hand. So it was because of this.

Xiao Wei said helplessly, ”Jiayuan, can you listen to me? You were right there, you saw how little respect your father had for me. How would you feel in your heart in that situation? I admit, I married into your family; that’s true. But did I ever use your family’s money while I was at your home? Did your father really need to look down on me like that? Not everyone who starts out poor has to stay poor forever. If a person is willing to work hard, they can surely go from being a penniless wretch to someone others look up to with admiration. I really don’t understand what kind of thinking your father has. Does he really value money that much in his eyes? Does he think I would take you and our child to suffer with me in the United States? If that were the case, I would have taken you both with me to the United States to start a business a year ago. That was the hardest time. But I’ve already gotten through that toughest period by myself. Now, I just want to take you to enjoy some good fortune. Why does your father look at me like this? Does trampling on my self-esteem over and over again satisfy him internally? When your father trampled on my dignity, you didn’t stand up for me. I can understand that; after all, he is your father. But you can’t expect me to remain indifferent when someone else tramples on my self-esteem. I am human, I have feelings, my heart can hurt too. My parents brought me into this world through hard work, not to be trampled on by others. I am an orphan, that’s true, but not because my parents abandoned me. They died in a car accident while traveling; they loved me too. To be honest, the love my parents had for me is no less than the love your father has for you. If it hadn’t been for fate taking my parents away, I could have been a happy child, carefree, without worrying about my later life! Since my destiny has turned out this way, I must keep going. I won’t stop for anyone or anything. Jiayuan, I truly have you in my heart, I really want to take our family to the United States, because only when a family is together, there is happiness. The place where a family is together, that is home. I don’t want to be alone in America. Why can’t your father understand that?”

Li Jiayuan felt sad hearing Xiao Wei’s words. She said to him, ”Xiao Wei, I’m sorry, I didn’t know your parents died in a car accident. I thought they abandoned you; that’s why you were an orphan. But no matter what, you shouldn’t have spoken to my father in that tone. Since your parents are gone, you should treat my father well. If you treat my father sincerely, I believe he will see the good in you and treat you well in return. Can you please not fight with each other anymore, okay?”

Xiao Wei heard what Li Jiayuan had said, and his heart really ached; he couldn’t understand why his own wife couldn’t understand the pain in his heart!

Xiao Wei let out a sigh and said to Li Jiayuan, ”Li Jiayuan, didn’t you hear everything just now? How did your father speak about me? He said I lack manners, that it’s my parents’ fault for not raising me properly, and he deliberately brought up the fact that I’m an orphan. Your father has never once considered me his son-in-law; I’ve never hated anyone in my life, but now I can tell you, I hate your father, from the bottom of my heart. I won’t allow anyone to speak badly of my parents—I don’t owe your family anything. This past year, I’ve already used assets worth hundreds of millions to rescue Li Corporation; I’ve settled my debts. Don’t always assume that the good things I do for your family are expected or taken for granted. In this world, no one is obliged or entitled to be good to anyone. When you act, can you consider the feelings of the people involved, their emotional hurt? It’s been so long since your mother passed away, and I have never said a bad word about her—not even when we fought over the western city project collaboration and argued fiercely. I’ve never accused you of lacking manners or said a bad word about your mother. But what about your father? He dares to speak ill of my deceased parents. Yes, I’m an orphan, I lack manners. But that has nothing to do with my parents; as a human being, one should still preserve some decency. What he did today has truly chilled my heart!”

When Jiayuan heard what Xiao Wei had said, she was at a loss for words. Beside her stood Dong Liu, who also had a clear recollection of what her father had said to Xiao Wei. He knew that if this had happened to her, it would have also been hard to bear, so he chose to respond with silence. He couldn’t bring himself to tell Xiao Wei, ”Just let it go and forgive my dad; he didn’t mean it. Can’t we all just get along peacefully as a family and go to the United States together?”

Xiao Wei scoffed a few times. He said to Li Jiayuan, ”Li Jiayuan, is this how your family conducts itself? Slapping someone and then offering them candy, expecting me to just forgive and forget. Hah, how could I dare? This is your father, the esteemed chairman of Li Corporation. It’s just too bad that when I poured hundreds of millions into Li Corporation, I became the largest shareholder. I could have easily let his life’s work go down the drain, but I’ve never done that. In this year, I’ve ensured that Li Corporation’s business thrives, all for the sake of being your father, my child’s grandfather; I’ve given him enough respect. But what am I to him? Go to the United States? I’m not interested anymore. If you want, you and the child can come with me to the United States; as for your father, whether he comes or not, I don’t care. Why should I humble myself before someone who disrespects me so much? I don’t owe him anything!”

”Xiao Wei, please don’t talk like that. My father really didn’t mean it, I apologize to you on his behalf,” Jiayuan pleaded.

After saying this, Li Jiayuan bowed deeply at ninety degrees to Xiao Wei. Seeing Li Jiayuan like this, Xiao Wei’s heart softened, but he turned and left, leaving Li Jiayuan alone in the living room. Li Haixiao heard it all from upstairs; this entire matter was his fault, it was he who had looked down on people. He felt that he should apologize to Xiao Wei; he didn’t want Xiao Wei and Li Jiayuan to fight over this!
