Chapter 241: Chapter 198: Big Shots Gather for Wu Ting’s Master’s Thesis Defense Committee, Part 2

The original plan discussed with Shen Siyuan was to use the Jinggang University Medical College’s project title to secure start-up capital from Jin Pharmaceutical Group. This would also facilitate hiring faculty and students from the Jinggang University Medical College and personnel from relevant hospital departments to participate in the research project.

Now that the first-phase paper was complete and the second-phase paper on the core mechanism of negative immune regulation was published, Wu Ting no longer needed to operate under the banner of the Jinggang University Medical College.

Once Wu Ting completed his thesis defense using the results and papers from the first and second phases, he could leverage their influence to enter business negotiations with Jin Pharmaceutical Group.

With their investment, he could legitimately return to City First Hospital and establish a laboratory for hepatitis B-related primary liver cancer that was entirely his own!

And the subsequent development of the Hepatic Tumor Surgery department!

Having figured everything out, Wu Ting quickly made his way to the cardiac surgery building at Jinggang University Affiliated First Hospital.

Besides, he had to perform Liu Xia’s combined negative immune regulation and hepatic tumor resection surgery the next day.

Upon arriving at Shen Siyuan’s office, Wu Ting made himself a cup of coffee. As he waited, he reviewed the patient’s various physical examination findings and test results, which Liu Xingye had recently sent over.

Shen Siyuan was still in the middle of an experiment. Lately, she had been spurred on by her student’s progress, driving her to work even harder. She refused to be outdone by him.

To that end, she had even done something unprecedented: she sent a document with questions to her own mentor, Professor Ye, asking for clarification. For years, she had rarely sought help, relying mostly on her own research and only consulting the old master when she was completely stuck.

This time, however, in order to accelerate her research, she had compiled a list of questions and sent it to her mentor, hoping he could help provide some answers.

She just didn’t know if her mentor had been too busy lately to reply, or if he had even seen it yet.

Shen Siyuan knew her mentor was a very busy man, so she hadn’t called to ask about it.

Only after reviewing and confirming the experimental results from the doctors on her team did Shen Siyuan return to her office.

Seeing his mentor, Wu Ting was delighted and ready to share the recent results of his project with her.

”Teacher Shen, my papers for the first and second phases are ready. Do you think you could start arranging my master’s thesis defense?”

Wu Ting got straight to the point.

Shen Siyuan was clearly incredulous to hear that Wu Ting wanted to schedule his thesis defense so soon.

After all, her plan hinged on two key achievements from the first and second phases. The most important was publishing the paper in *Cell*, followed by the publication of the first-phase paper. Only with both of those accomplishments could she justify arranging an expert review panel for his thesis defense and, more critically, initiating business negotiations with Jin Pharmaceutical Group.

Without the endorsement of a top-tier journal, trying to secure research funding with nothing but promises was just a pipe dream.

Besides, the subsequent third and fourth phases of Wu Ting’s project would require funding in the tens of millions. This wasn’t like the initial start-up phase where they could get by just by selling a concept.

’Jin Pharmaceutical Group isn’t a charity, and Wu Ting’s name doesn’t carry that much weight,’ she thought.

Shen Siyuan was quite familiar with *Cell*. It was a monthly journal. Wu Ting had only just submitted his article; it would have to go through review and verification, a process that took at least three to six months. ’How much time has actually passed?’

”Wu Ting, while your research accomplishments are plain for all to see, you must follow the proper procedures. Don’t be so impatient.”

”Scientific research is a long-term process. How long has it been since you even started this project, and you’re already thinking about wrapping it up? The research project I’m currently working on has been underway for almost two years, and I still don’t have any definitive results.”

”Some grant-funded projects take three or four years to complete. Just be patient and go back to waiting.”

Shen Siyuan deeply admired Wu Ting, but impatience was the greatest vice for a researcher. A calm and steady mindset was essential.

Wu Ting, of course, understood Shen Siyuan’s good intentions. ’But the thing is,’ he thought, ’I actually received special treatment from the *Cell* editorial department.’

’Looks like Teacher Shen is a bit behind on the latest news from international journals,’ he mused. ’Then again, considering she’s been cooped up in the lab this whole time, I guess it’s understandable.’

Just as Wu Ting was about to explain, Shen Siyuan’s phone rang.

Shen Siyuan held up a hand to silence Wu Ting. ”Wait a moment. It’s my mentor, Professor Ye.”

Shen Siyuan’s mood brightened instantly. ’It looks like my mentor carefully read my document and is calling me back personally.’

’No wonder he’s been so quiet the last couple of days. He must have been carefully reviewing my document to prepare a thorough response.’

Professor Ye had always doted on Shen Siyuan, his youngest disciple, giving her the most support in her academic career.

”When I get the chance, I’ll take you to meet my mentor,” she said.

Shen Siyuan felt Wu Ting was impressive enough to be introduced to her own mentor. She was sure he would appreciate Wu Ting as well.

Shen Siyuan answered the phone, her voice full of gratitude.

”Thank you for all your hard work these past few days, Professor. You must have lost sleep going over my questions. The next time I come to Qinghe City, I’ll be sure to bring you your favorite Mingqian Longjing tea.”

”Professor, regarding my project, ’Epigenetic Remodeling of Innate Immunity and Inflammation,’ what are your thoughts on the novel immunoregulatory mechanism of DCs, and the twelve new HUGO-named molecules I’m researching...?”
