Chapter 207: Chapter 185: The Conditions for a Special Promotion to Associate Director (2)

Huo Yun, for his part, was preparing to launch Wu Ting’s new research project: ESPBD, or Endoscopic Sphincterotomy with Small Incision and Balloon Dilation.

Meanwhile, Director Huo did some careful calculations. Based on the current progress of the new surgical technique and the core journal paper Wu Ting was about to secure, he realized it was only a matter of waiting for the opportune moment. At that point, City First Hospital’s Emergency Department would already satisfy the conditions to apply to become a key provincial specialty for laparoscopic diagnosis and treatment technology.

Moreover, Wu Ting’s previous project on the Perfect Triple Method-assisted laparoscopic technique now also met the various criteria for the Jin Province Science and Technology Progress Award.

As Huo Yun mulled this over, calculating the possibilities, the smile on his face grew wider.

’Huh, if Wu Ting really manages to win the Jin Province Science and Technology Progress Award, on top of his published papers and his membership in the Jin Province Medical Association Surgery Branch, he’ll only need to meet one more requirement to bypass the work-experience prerequisite and get an exceptional promotion to associate chief physician.’

Excited, Huo Yun began looking up the relevant policies for Jin Province, even more enthusiastically than when he himself was being considered for associate chief physician years ago.

After all, with Wu Ting’s current achievements and skills, the position of chief resident was a waste of his talent.

The only issue was that current regulations had strict requirements for attending physicians, with no exceptions for promotion. They could only wait until they had enough years of service and pass the relevant exams.

However, there were indeed policies for exceptional promotion to associate chief physician. It was just that the conditions were incredibly strict:

”1. Be one of the top nine contributors to a first-prize provincial or ministerial-level scientific and technological achievement...

2. Win a first-prize achievement award from the Municipal Science and Technology Bureau (cannot be stacked with the first condition)...

3. Be able to proficiently read professional books and journals in a foreign language...

4. Be a technical leader in one’s specialty...

5. Have published at least three articles in national-level Grade 1 or Grade 2 medical and health journals, with high academic standards and practical value...

6. Have organized and resolved the diagnosis and treatment of difficult and complex cases, and have considerable renown among peers (selected as a member of a provincial-level medical association or higher)...

7. Have received a national or provincial/ministerial-level title such as ’Outstanding Contribution Young or Middle-Aged Expert,’ ’Advanced Worker,’ or ’Provincial Youth Skill Expert’...”

According to the latest policy for exceptional promotions in Jin Province’s medical and health industry, one had to meet at least four of the listed criteria to be promoted to associate chief physician.

Given Wu Ting’s current trajectory and the achievements he was projected to obtain, there was a high probability that he could leapfrog directly from his position as a resident to associate chief physician, skipping the attending physician stage entirely through an exceptional promotion.

Huo Yun grew excited. He secretly made a note of it, planning to give Wu Ting a surprise once he met the conditions.

The status of an associate chief physician would also make it easier for him to carry out more work.

...

Over the next few days, the Emergency Department and the research center settled back into their daily work routines.

Zhang Heng also quieted down and began to seriously focus on his own research project.

Meanwhile, under the guidance of Wu Ting’s theoretical framework, his team began studying and promoting the ESPBD technique.

Wu Ting took the lead as the surgeon, admitting relevant patients, and Director Cai Qi even came over to act as his assistant.

After all, Cai Qi was currently the only one at City First Hospital with a solid foundation in ERCP.

Cai Qi felt no psychological pressure about assisting Wu Ting. After all, plenty of other directors like Qin Donglai, Jiang Ming, and Zhang Zhong had done the same, so he was hardly the first.

The key was that he could genuinely learn something by following Wu Ting.

Besides, once the EST technique matured, it would be implemented jointly with the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery.

In addition, Wu Ting’s other new surgical techniques were also shared with the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery. He had brought about a complete transformation to the department in a short time. Aside from Cai Qi, the other doctors in Hepatobiliary Surgery deeply admired Wu Ting.

In terms of prestige within Hepatobiliary Surgery, if Wu Ting continued on this path, he would sooner or later eclipse Cai Qi.

Cai Qi did not try to obstruct this, instead choosing to let things take their natural course.

Cai Qi had done a lot of thinking recently and was slowly coming to accept the idea Huo Yun had proposed.

With only Cai Qi at the helm, City First Hospital’s Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery would likely stagnate for the next ten or twenty years.

However, if things went according to the blueprint Huo Yun had laid out—with Wu Ting learning new surgical techniques and concepts in the hepatic tumor field from his mentors at Jinggang University Medical College and the directors at Jinggang University Affiliated First Hospital, and then bringing them back—it wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing to establish an independent Department of Hepatic Tumor Surgery from within Hepatobiliary Surgery.

Besides, given the relationship between Hepatobiliary Surgery and Hepatic Tumor Surgery, they would most likely share the same set of doctors afterward.

Wu Ting wouldn’t just be the Emergency Department’s Wu Ting, nor the Hepatic Tumor Surgery’s Wu Ting. He would become City First Hospital’s Wu Ting—a great physician whose potential sparked the imagination!

Cai Qi didn’t have Huo Yun’s boldness or ambition, but he genuinely wanted the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery to grow bigger and stronger under his leadership.

If he couldn’t achieve it himself, then he would give his full support to Wu Ting to strengthen the department and spin off a specialized Department of Hepatic Tumor Surgery!

’Winning by piggybacking is still winning!’

「Jinggang University Affiliated First Hospital, Department of Hepatic Tumor Surgery」

Director Fu received a special phone call and admitted a special patient.

Dean Song personally summoned Director Fu and Director Shen Xiaofei to his office.

Inside the office were two leaders, their expressions grave.

When the two directors arrived, the two leaders greeted them with a warm handshake.

Dean Song made the introductions:

”This is Fu Jinfen, the director of our Department of Hepatic Tumor Surgery, and this is Shen Xiaofei, the director of our Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery. Both are leading surgeons in the field of liver surgery here in Jin Province...”

After introducing his team, Dean Song turned to his two doctors, his tone becoming serious as he continued the introductions:

”Director Fu, Director Shen, our hospital is about to undertake a critical mission.”

”This is Director Li Qing from the Provincial Personnel Bureau. He is also the patient’s older brother.”

”This gentleman is a leader from a certain military unit in Xiao City. The patient they’ve brought this time is a researcher from the military’s scientific research institute.”

”This comrade is one of our province’s ’Outstanding Contribution Youth Experts,’ an expert in her field, and the core of her team. However, at a critical juncture in her research, this scientist, Comrade Li Ai, was diagnosed with mid-stage primary liver cancer secondary to chronic hepatitis B during a routine physical at her workplace. This has come as a sudden blow... and the impact is significant...”

”Comrade Li Ai’s health is directly related to the progress of a major research and development project for our military, which in turn relates to national defense... Therefore, we need your hospital to urgently form a special medical team. Of course, the patient’s identity and background must be kept strictly confidential...”

”You are to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of Comrade Li Ai and formulate a complete treatment plan.”

”We understand that a complete cure for mid-stage primary liver cancer is very difficult, but we must at least ensure that Comrade Li receives the best possible treatment, that she has a long enough survival period to complete her research... It’s a cruel reality, but this is her mission, and also her personal wish...”

After he finished explaining, Dean Song added with great solemnity:

”Directors, I need you both to assemble a medical team immediately. If necessary, you can also invite top national experts for a joint consultation.”

Li Qing and the military leader also looked at the two directors. ”We’re counting on you!”
