Chapter 238: Chapter 197: Professor Ye Xin’s Gift to Grand-disciple Wu Ting

The R&D department of Jin Pharmaceutical Group.

Inside the manager’s office, Deng Feifei’s assistant, Wei Yu, walked over, looking a little nervous.

”President Deng, during the board meeting just now, President Bai specifically had the finance department audit our R&D department’s accounts. They focused on our sponsorship payment to Dr. Wu Ting of Jinggang University Medical College.”

”Regarding that payment, didn’t you only have a verbal agreement with Dr. Wu Ting? There was no written contract. It was a three-million-yuan grant, and we haven’t seen any tangible benefits. Do you think the board is going to give us trouble over this?”

Wei Yu was worried for Deng Feifei. Although Deng Feifei was Chairman Jin’s daughter, Jin Yihong had always been impartial and strictly professional when it came to business.

This time, Deng Feifei had used her authority to make a private deal with Wu Ting, investing three million yuan without securing any substantial benefits. If the board questioned her, it would be very difficult to explain.

Most importantly, Dr. Wu Ting’s team and their ”one-yuan project” had become highly controversial online recently. This was especially true after an opinion piece in the *Xiao City Science and Technology Daily* and an article by You Wei, the Director of Oncological Surgery at Xiao City People’s Hospital, titled, ”Jinggang University Medical School Graduate’s One-Yuan Project: An Attempt to Cure HBV-Related Primary Liver Cancer, or a New Form of Academic Misconduct?”

This was incredibly damaging. For now, Jinggang University Medical College was bearing the brunt of the negative public opinion. However, if someone with an agenda looked into the project’s registration details, they would inevitably dig up the fact that Jin Pharmaceutical Group had funded it.

If someone managed to control the narrative, Jin Pharmaceutical Group could be dragged down with them, suffering from the negative impact as well.

Spending three million yuan for no tangible benefit and stirring up a hornet’s nest in the process. This was extremely disadvantageous for Deng Feifei.

Deng Feifei was Jin Yihong’s only daughter. She had always been an outstanding performer and was quite influential within the group.

If things proceeded as expected, Deng Feifei was the most likely successor to Jin Yihong, so any negative incidents were to be strictly avoided.

Deng Feifei and Wu Ting—a beautiful woman and a handsome man. If someone with malicious intent decided to twist the facts and spread salacious rumors, it would be a devastating blow to Deng Feifei’s image and reputation.

The reality of business competition:

It’s not like in the TV dramas where you cut off a rival’s funding.

It’s slashing the seat of a rival’s bicycle in the middle of the night...

Hiring a cleaning lady to unplug their internet cable...

The most high-stakes business warfare often employs the most primitive methods. Thinking of this, Deng Feifei also grew tense.

Just then, the president’s assistant came to the R&D department.

”Manager Deng, the board of directors wants you in the conference room right now. There are some things you need to explain.”

Wei Yu’s expression changed. As expected, the inevitable had arrived.

Deng Feifei, influenced by Wei Yu’s analysis, also looked grim.

Today’s board meeting was a top-level affair; she wasn’t even qualified to attend. Being summoned out of the blue, especially after they had audited her department’s accounts and focused on Wu Ting’s project, was not a good sign.

Feeling apprehensive, Deng Feifei followed the president’s assistant to the conference room door and walked in alone.

As Deng Feifei entered, Jin Yihong and all the board members turned to look at her.

President Bai was the first to speak.

”Manager Deng, we called you here to ask about something. Did you, some time ago, reach an investment agreement for a research project with Dr. Wu Ting from the Jinggang University Medical School Graduate Department?”

Facing the aggressive questioning and the intense scrutiny of the board, Deng Feifei braced herself and began to explain.

”I did invest in Dr. Wu Ting’s research project, but it’s not what you think. And my decision to invest was not baseless.”

”To be precise, I wasn’t investing in the project itself, but rather in Dr. Wu Ting as a person.”

Deng Feifei realized her explanation sounded somewhat ambiguous and could be easily misunderstood, so she quickly added:

”At the time, I seriously consulted Professor Jin. He personally investigated and reviewed Dr. Wu Ting’s project proposal and literature review... Professor Jin gave Dr. Wu Ting an extremely high evaluation, believing his achievements and future in the field of life sciences, especially immunology, are limitless...”

To make her investment seem less like a shot in the dark, Deng Feifei continued to add her own positive impressions of Wu Ting.

”Of course, aside from Professor Jin’s recommendation, I also personally conducted in-depth discussions and negotiations with Dr. Wu Ting.”

Watching Deng Feifei’s performance, the board members realized she had misunderstood their intentions and had no idea about the true significance of Wu Ting’s project.

And so, they all watched with amusement as she continued to explain herself.

Sensing the board’s strange, shared gaze, Deng Feifei began to bristle.

Jin Yihong rarely saw her daughter admire and praise someone so highly. More importantly, this person had also earned such a favorable opinion from her own father.

”Then how did you meet Dr. Wu Ting, and how did he come to you for investment in this project? Three million in seed funding for a graduate student’s thesis project? Deng Feifei, what was your reasoning?”

Jin Yihong’s tone was stern. In truth, this line of questioning was meant to give Deng Feifei a chance to prove herself in front of the board.

Seeing her mother’s serious expression, Deng Feifei took a deep breath. Remembering Wu Ting’s performance on the two previous occasions, she decided to go all in.
