I Became The Chief Of A Primitive Village

Chapter 423, Gossip

Early in the morning, Su Bai took a sip of tea at the dining table, as they had just finished breakfast.

People from the Tribe were returning one after another. The Pink Flower Festival lasted a day and a night, and people generally returned the following morning.

Everyone would go in the morning and come back at night. If they met someone suitable, they would bring them back. If not, they would have to wait until next year or for other opportunities.

“It’s so lively outside. Everyone has returned or is on their way back, right?” Su Bai asked as he stood up.

“Yes, everyone has returned. I heard the ‘harvest’ is good this year.” Yan Hua said with a smile.

When they returned, Yan Hua had excitedly ran over to join the commotion.

She wanted to see what kind of ‘harvest’ her people had, after all, this was a major annual festival.

“Oh? Tell me, how did it go?” Su Bai asked curiously.

“I saw many men in the Tribe bringing back girls, and those girls were each more beautiful than the last.” Yan Hua said.

When Yan Hua was at the Tribe’s outer region, she saw many girls. Those girls came from various Tribes, and each had slightly different attire.

“Our boys are quite capable of bringing back so many girls.” Su Bai said with a grin.

Naturally, he already had an inkling because when they set out, he had given them spices and great tactics.

These two things were enough to make those girls interested. Any girl who was not a fool would want to follow them back.

After all, what those girls cared about was not appearance; appearance was secondary. The most important factor was whether the Tribe was powerful enough and whether they would starve after marrying into it.

Only after the basic needs were fulfilled would they consider the other person’s appearance or character. In this world, appearance was not high on the priority list. As long as someone looked decent and had a strong body, they would be favoured.

“Yes, their outfits are strange. I roughly counted about forty people or so…” Yan Hua said.

Yan Hua was quite the gossiper at this time. She had attentively watched at the entrance to the Tribe for quite a while.

She went, and even brought along the Sha Lan and Co Co, saying they should all go see what the commotion was about.

“I was there too. They all applied many strange things on their faces…” Sha Lan added.

Sha Lan was stunned when she saw those girls because many of them were quite different from the girls of the Flame Dragon Tribe.

“Tell me, what’s so different about them?” Su Bai sat up straight, feeling curious.

After all, the Pink Flower Festival could be considered the most important festival, because this festival was crucial for the Tribe’s continuation of their lineage.

The Tribesmen needed this festival to continue their lineage, although they could also freely form unions.

It was unfortunate but most of such unions if solely from within the Tribe would be from close or distant relatives, and the children born from such unions would not be of much help to the Tribe’s development.

The Tribe needed strong Warriors – people who could protect the Tribe, or people who could help the Tribe. They could not easily absorb the societal burden of taking care of the disabled or mentally impaired. This was not Su Bai being pessimistic, but it was simply the reality of the situation without abundance.

Even if such babies were born, they would be heartlessly taken to the riverside and drowned in silence, because keeping them alive would not be hard for the parents as much as for the child.

Primitive Tribes were just that cruel – the weak were prey to the strong, and only the fittest survived. If they were not strong enough, they would be eliminated.

“Some people applied red substances on their faces, while others applied black substances.” Yan Hua said.

“Not just that, they also applied many coloured substances on their bodies, looking as if they were going out to hunt,” Sha Lan added.

“And the things they wore were also strange, different from what people in our Tribe wear.” Co Co chimed in.

The girls were all surprised when they saw those women, not knowing who to look at because everyone was so unique.

“Each Tribe probably has their own distinctive attire, and not every Tribe is the same.” Su Bai said.

He understood this point. Just like on Earth, people from different regions had different attire, accents, and appearances.

“But those girls all look so beautiful, some even looked like Warriors.” Yan Hua said.

Yan Hua saw many robust women, and thought those women must have helped with many tasks in their Tribes.

“The boys in our Tribe are lucky, finding so many beautiful girls at once.” Sha Lan covered her mouth and chuckled.

“In the end, how did they ‘harvest’ so many girls? Was it all because of the food?” Su Bai still wanted to confirm.

Yan Hua reluctantly nodded and replied, “Yes. I heard from the women who returned to the Tribe that the meat we roasted attracted too many people.”

All the men and women from the Flame Dragon Tribe who went came back in pairs.

Those men who did not have a girl followed them back, and likewise girls who did not fancy a man, each returned on their own from the plateau.

“They said the women there were terrifying, they started fighting over meat. Some even started roasting it themselves.” Sha Lan found the scene a bit frightening even just imagining it.

“I also heard those girls say the boys were performing very enthusiastically.” Co Co said with a giggle.

While the girls from other Tribes were eating roasted meat, they were also watching the men from the Flame Dragon Tribe perform to their fullest.

Some were showing off their muscles or robust chests, or displaying the goods they had brought.

Even more exaggerated were those boasting about encounters with beasts and conquering them, or describing how wonderful their Tribe was and so on.

Everyone was trying to outdo each other, looking just like animals courting. Each one of them performed energetically.

“And, also, I heard that we have attracted the attention of many men from other Tribes too. They looked very jealous.” Yan Hua spoke as if she were telling a story.

She loved hearing about such things, so she chatted with the returning girls for a long time in the morning.

“I heard about that too. They say the men from other Tribes were so angry they were grinding their teeth because so many girls from their Tribes were attracted to us!” Sha Lan covered her mouth and laughed.

Just imagining this scene was amusing but also sad- everyone performed energetically, yet no one visited their station.

“Hearing all this, it does sound quite funny,” Su Bai also found it amusing.

He had not expected the Pink Flower Festival to be so interesting, with such amusing events to see.

[I should go see it for myself next year, or I would be missing out on the fun.]

“Shaman, there’s more! Let me tell you…” Yan Hua was beside herself with joy.
