I Became The Chief Of A Primitive Village

Chapter 404, Becoming a Staple Food

The rain continued to fall incessantly on the Flame Dragon Tribe, and the downpour was intensifying as they approached the end of the rainy season.

Yu Ying put away her umbrella and began walking up to the second floor, having gone early in the morning to check on the vegetables in the greenhouse. She had also gone to see the situation with the sheep in the sheep pen and the cattle in the cattle pen, as more of them had been found pregnant.

“Shaman, our sheep has given birth to lambs!” Yu Ying called out happily.

She kept wagging her fox tail as she ran from the stairs to the living room, continuously shouting that the sheep had given birth to lambs. Her face was filled with joy and surprise. Although sheep and cattle had previously given birth to their first litters, this morning she had witnessed it with her own eyes, so it felt particularly different.

“We had a batch that gave birth before. Why are you so excited by this?” Su Bai asked.

“This morning I saw with my own eyes the mother sheep giving birth to lambs. She had three in total.” Yu Ying said, still excited.

She had just opened the door to the sheep pen when she saw the mother sheep give birth to the first lamb. The feeling of witnessing it firsthand was different. Next, she watched the mother sheep lick away the lamb’s placenta. She then observed the birth of the other two lambs in full, though she did not get too close because she did not want to disturb them.

“Oh? You witnessed their birth firsthand?” Su Bai’s thick black eyebrows raised slightly.

In all his years, he had never witnessed the birth of an animal. He had previously raised a cat, and although that cat had become pregnant, he had transmigrated before he could see the kittens being born.

“Shaman, do you want to go see? Those lambs are really cute.” Yu Ying happily asked.

She was particularly happy because she had witnessed the birth of the lambs, and would probably remain cheerful for the entire day.

Su Bai pondered for a moment, then nodded and stood up, saying, “Let’s go take a look. It happens that I also need to use my Shaman Technique on the vegetables today.”

His daily exercise was simply walking from the cement house to the greenhouse. Despite this, his physical condition was improving each day. In fact, this was visible to the naked eye.

*Step step step…* The group opened their umbrellas as they left the cement house and headed towards the greenhouse, wanting to first check on the growth of the vegetables.

Half an hour later, Su Bai arrived inside the greenhouse, and the first thing he saw were the tomatoes.

He discovered that the tomatoes had already bloomed, with dense yellow flowers appearing on the green plants. There were quite a number of flowers, with many on each plant, looking like they would produce many tomatoes.

However, it probably had nothing to do with the soil quality. Otherwise, they would have grown faster much earlier. It must have been because he had previously used the Growth Acceleration Skill that they grew so much faster and had more flowers.

“They’ve bloomed really quickly, much faster than I’d imagined.” Su Bai nodded with satisfaction.

He remembered that when he came to look yesterday, there was not a single bud, yet today, they had fully blossomed.

At this rate, they could harvest fresh tomatoes tomorrow.

“I was wondering what was happening, so it’s just that they’ve flowered…” Yu Ying said thoughtfully.

When she came to look this morning, she had already noticed the tomatoes flowering, but having never seen tomatoes before, how would she know? She knew that the Shaman had to come to look later. By that time, she could ask him what was happening.

“Just wait awhile, we’ll be able to eat tomatoes soon enough.” Su Bai smiled, already calculating tomato recipes in his mind.

Such as tomato and eggs, tomato egg drop soup, or even tomato with wood ear mushrooms and meat, as well as tomatoes with Wolf Tail Grass Noodle, and so on.

There were too many dishes that could be made with tomatoes, and the main flavour was sweet and sour – with properties that could relieve pressure and aid digestion. In short, it was a great agricultural product that served a variety of dietary needs.

“Shaman, what do tomatoes look like?” Co Co blinked her golden eyes and continued to ask, “Why can we eat them after they flower?”

Co Co tended to ask many questions, perhaps due to her memory loss. In any case, she wanted to know the reason behind many matters.

“The main reason tomatoes flower is because flowers are their reproductive org—cough cough…” Su Bai coughed lightly, realizing that saying it directly would be too explicit, and continued more tactfully, “To bear fruit, they must first flower. This is the law of nature. Flowering is their main method of reproduction.”

“So that’s how it is. The plant’s way of doing that is by flowering, which is different from us, right?” Co Co pondered.

“You could understand it that way,” Su Bai nodded slightly.

He turned and walked toward the wheat to see how the previously sown wheat was doing.

*Step step step…* He saw that the wheat was also growing very well, already quite tall. The entire field looked lush and particularly beautiful.

Walking through it, the wheat reached up to people’s calves. At this rate of growth, it would begin to form ears in a few more days.

[Indeed, having the Growth Acceleration Skill is convenient. It has drastically shortened the time needed for these plants to grow.] Su Bai murmured with satisfaction.

Without this Skill, these plants would probably have to wait for a few more months.

Before having this Skill, he had originally considered whether to dig up some soil from other places for cultivation. Apparently, the soil could greatly reduce the growth cycle of plants. If he did not have the Growth Acceleration Skill, it would be good to get some soil for growing crops.

Although it would be a bit troublesome, who would not want the growth period of their agricultural products to be shortened?

“Shaman, when can we eat the wheat?” Yu Ying asked.

Every day, when she came to the greenhouse, she could see the different changes in the plants, from the sown seeds with nothing visible, to gradual sprouts, to now adult plants.

She had seen it all, so now every time she entered the greenhouse, she felt a sense of familiarity.

“Maybe in another seven or eight days. It won’t take long before we can eat the wheat.” Su Bai said.

Wheat could be used to make many things. On Earth, it was one of the three major grain crops, almost entirely used for food, with only about one-sixth used as feed.

After wheat is ground into flour, it can be used to make bread, biscuits, noodles, and other foods.

If used for fermentation, it could also be made into beer, alcohol, or biomass fuel.

“What will wheat taste like?” Yu Ying began to consider the taste of wheat.

She had heard the Shaman talk about wheat, and he had said that this crop was delicious.

“Hmm… it will become something we eat every day in the future,” Su Bai smiled.
