My Alleged Husband

Chapter 2148: Chapter 1981: Who’s to Blame

Even if in the end, love shatters the heart, we shouldn’t blame anyone—just blame the encounter for being too perfect.

”Sister, good words need not be spoken twice, but what I tell you isn’t something I’ve said just once or twice—I’ve told you countless times, yet you’ve never listened to me. You’re always so stubbornly independent. Why can’t you listen to others’ opinions more often? Listening more to others’ opinions won’t harm you; on the contrary, it might bring unexpected benefits. Don’t make those who love you sad anymore!” Xiao Wei earnestly advised.

”I already said, my affairs are none of your concern. Why do you meddle? Do you know how annoying I find you like this? Even if you’re my brother, so what? Can being my brother give you the right to interfere in your sister’s life? You say I never consider others, but do you know I have my reasons for doing so?”

Hearing his sister say that there was a reason for her actions, Xiao Wei’s heart softened. He wanted to know what reason turned his sister into who she was now.

”You say there’s a reason for what you do, then I hope you tell me—what could possibly drive you to do such heartless things over and over, even hurting your own son?” Xiao Wei asked Xia Jing, ”Don’t tell me you’re going to say you have some illness and not much time left, which is why you’re doing this?”

Xia Jing initially lied to deceive her brother, so now that Xiao Wei had spoken so frankly, why shouldn’t she go along with what her brother had said?

”You’re right, I’m ill. Before coming back this morning, I was diagnosed with severe depression. If not treated properly, my time will be limited.”

Xiao Wei found it laughable and frustrating—Xia Jing could really say such things!

”If you were diagnosed long ago with a terminal illness, why didn’t you tell us when you came back? If you truly have such severe depression, you should have shown it the day you returned, but you didn’t. Are you lying to me?”

Xia Jing was stunned by her brother’s words. She wasn’t sick at all, and she said this only to gain sympathy, wanting everyone to make sacrifices for her as a supposed patient.

”Do you think I don’t want to tell? I just can’t say it out loud. I don’t want everyone worrying about me. You all are the people I love most; how can I let everyone worry because of my illness? Wouldn’t that be too selfish?”

”Since you know that because of your illness, making everyone worry is selfish, don’t you realize that making your son lose his lifelong happiness because of you is also selfish? Sister, you understand many principles; you just refuse to admit it. That’s the fact. You know many things that can’t be changed, yet you still want to defy destiny for one more chance. You don’t want destiny deciding your life’s happiness; if so, why do you work so hard to arrange your son’s happiness? Don’t you know most of your son’s nature follows yours? What you dislike he also dislikes; what principles you don’t like he also doesn’t. Given how much you two have in common, why do such hurtful things to each other? Don’t you know that by hurting him repeatedly, it only makes your son feel repulsed by you, his biological mother? Sister, I believe you see many things more clearly than anyone else; you’re just afraid to admit the truth because you think you’d lose everything if you did. But the truth is, if you bravely accept the truth, you’d gain more than you’d lose. Yet you still choose to escape. I can’t be sure if you really have severe depression as you claim, but I want to know, whatever happens, don’t lie to those who love you, as it will only damage relationships and make everyone lose faith in you. Sister, think twice before acting. I can give you a chance now—honestly tell me, do you have depression?” Xiao Wei asked Xia Jing.

Xia Jing knew, since it had come to this point, there was no turning back. If she admitted her earlier words were lies, she would lose her brother, so she had to grit her teeth and continue lying.

”How could you doubt me? I’m your sister; how could I deceive you? Indeed, I was diagnosed with severe depression. If not for this, why would I repeatedly hurt my own son? Why would I feel so insecure and seek security from others? You might think that as a sister, I’ve got everything glamorous, but you’ll never know how hard it is for me. Suffering daily and constantly tortured by a shadow, if not for this illness, why would I push the woman my son loves off a cliff? Sometimes, when I recall that scene, I’m frightened. I can’t believe I’d do such a thing, that I’d be so ruthless to destroy my son’s lifelong happiness. But sometimes I have to accept it’s the truth. When the illness strikes, it’s unbearable. Once it strikes, I become insane, doing whatever it takes to achieve my goals, because only then do I feel relieved. It’s precisely like this, harming those I love the most and those who love me the most, again and again.”

”Since your depression is so severe, why not tell your son, your father-in-law? Why hide it from your brother?” Xiao Wei couldn’t understand why his sister hid her illness.

”How could I tell you all? Would it help? Telling you would only make you worry more and get more anxious about my condition. I’m not someone who can’t understand reason, but when I’m ill, I don’t know how to accept things because once I’m hurt, I feel the world has betrayed me. I only think of revenge because only the pleasure of revenge can numb me, making me lose myself completely. What I say to you today, I hope you won’t tell my son, father-in-law, or husband; it would be too huge a blow for them to handle. I don’t want my son to acknowledge me as his mother just because I’m sick. If you still consider me your sister, then keep this secret for me!”

Xiao Wei thought for a moment and said, ”Don’t worry, I’ll keep your secret. You focus on getting better.”

I wish to emerge from the cocoon and fly with you. What I fear most is you never returning once you leave.
