My Alleged Husband

Chapter 2109: Chapter 1942: Luck

Sometimes, whether you’re happy or not is something only you know yourself. There’s always someone who says luck can make a person happy.

Old Master Zhang felt that what Xia Jing said made a lot of sense. Even though he was very reluctant to help his daughter-in-law, he still had to do so. After all, the harmony of a family relies on mutual support: ”Alright, I’ll try to persuade him for you, but I can’t guarantee the outcome...”

Hearing that her father was willing to step in and persuade her husband, Xia Jing was overjoyed and didn’t care about the outcome. She happily agreed with her father: ”No worries, as long as you step in to mediate, that’s enough!”

After Xia Jing and Old Master Zhang hung up the phone, Old Master Zhang called his son Zhang Zhentian, urging him to return home quickly as he had something important to tell him. When Zhang Zhentian heard his father say there was something important, he put aside his work and hurried home, eagerly awaiting what his father had to say, wondering whether it would be good news or bad news.

”Dad, I’m back. Just say whatever you want. You called me home so urgently; it must be something important, right?” Zhang Zhentian said.

Old Master Zhang watched his son rush back so quickly, aware of what his son was expecting, but he couldn’t fulfill his son’s expectations.

”You haven’t worked for so many years, so why are you so busy today? Can you tell me what kind of things you’re busy with?”

Zhang Zhentian didn’t expect his father to open with this question. It was a question he truly didn’t know how to answer; he hadn’t worked for many years and didn’t know how to work. Without work experience, he was never welcomed anywhere. Moreover, he wasn’t busy with work; he was handling the divorce papers. He didn’t want to shortchange his wife of over ten years; he planned to give all his assets to her, hoping she could live without worries even after leaving him.

Old Master Zhang saw his son staying silent and felt his son must be hiding something. He said to his son: ”Is there something you’re hiding from me that you can’t tell me?”

Hearing his father say this, Zhang Zhentian knew the matter wasn’t simple, and it must be his wife who had told his father. But now, how should he handle this?

”You’re right. I’m not busy with work; I’m handling the divorce papers. I plan to give all my assets to my wife. She said after over ten years of marriage, I shouldn’t shortchange her and should let her live without worries even after leaving me. I don’t want her to suffer any grievances!” Zhang Zhentian finally admitted to his father what he was really busy with.

”Have you really thought it through? Over ten years of marriage, does that mean nothing to you? I don’t understand what she did, but I really want to know what kind of thing could make you so furious that you’d give up what you fought so hard to have. Perhaps I don’t understand young people’s emotions, but I still hope you understand that marriage doesn’t come easy. Two people staying together for over ten years is even more rare. You should know, as the saying goes, it takes ten years to build a boat together, a hundred years to share a bed. The bond formed over so many years comes from countless lifetimes of fate, so why give up over a trivial matter?” No matter what, Old Master Zhang hopes his son continues to live happily. No matter what his son has done to him, he doesn’t wish for his child’s marriage to be unhappy. Maybe this is what it means to be an elder.

Hearing his father constantly persuading him, Zhang Zhentian felt increasingly guilty. For over ten years, he hasn’t fulfilled his obligations towards his father, nor his duties as a father. But due to his return, his son, his father, have suffered so much because of him, yet he feels powerless, lacking the basic ability to protect them, and it makes him feel very inferior.

”You don’t need to be involved in this matter. This time, she lied to me so greatly that I can’t bear it. Do you know? What I care about most is preventing her from suffering even a tiny bit of harm, but to deceive Xiao Wei, she actually used her own body as part of the lie. With such a wife, how could I possibly continue living with her? Over the years, she’s told me so many lies, but I tolerated them all. Today, I simply can’t take it anymore. No matter how she deceives me or others with lies, I can act like nothing happened, but I can’t accept her using her health to deceive others!”

”Are you really prepared to give up a wife of over ten years over such a trivial thing? Is this the kind of decision a man should make? A man needs a constantly clear mind, but can you honestly say that you aren’t acting rashly when you make this decision? Once this decision is made, isn’t there even a shred of regret? Treating your wife this way, won’t there come a day when you’ll regret it? When you’ve kicked her out of the house, severed all ties, won’t you miss her? Marital bond is truly rare; it’s clear to me she sincerely cares about you. Though she hasn’t fulfilled her filial duties to me, as her father-in-law, I still hope you two live happily. I’ve raised your child, and he doesn’t need you to bear any further responsibilities. You can continue living the carefree life you want, so why make things so unpleasant over such a trivial thing? I really shouldn’t meddle in this matter, but since Xia Jing came to me, I can’t ignore it. Her coming to me shows her heart has you in it; she truly doesn’t want to destroy this marriage just like that. How could you hurt a girl like her this way? Even though she’s done so many things to hurt your son’s fiancée, both your son and daughter-in-law have forgiven her; why can’t you? Her lying is her problem; her unwillingness to be honest is her flaw, not others’. Personality differs from person to person, as does experience. Sometimes a person’s personality changes greatly due to their experiences, and you should often put yourself in her shoes to empathize with her, not oppose her. You, breaking up and divorcing her like this, can’t your heart really feel no pain? She’s been your wife for over ten years, the woman you once fought all odds to be with. If you abandon her like this, you’ll only earn everyone’s disdain, make everyone think that you’re a man who can discard his wife so casually—a man who’s a useless coward...”

But luck may not always bring good fortune; happy days are always around!
