My Alleged Husband

Chapter 391: Chapter 370 Many Feelings_1

After Zhang Yichen left Lei Jian’s place, he drove back home quickly. He didn’t want his wife to wait too long for him at home, knowing that she needed his care now more than ever. His responsibilities were becoming heavier by the day, and he couldn’t be absent from his son’s growth at any cost. He wanted to be by his wife’s side every moment, watching their baby come into this world. He wanted to set the best example for his child, letting them know how much he, as a father, loved her.

When Ran Zhihan saw Zhang Yichen returning, she said to him, ”Husband, is Lei Jian’s grandfather alright?”

”Wife,” he replied, ”after visiting his grandfather, I really had a lot of thoughts. Sometimes, I start to think, what if the person lying there were my own grandfather? What would I do? How should I act? You should know how good my grandfather has been to his grandson. Whatever I wanted, he’d give his all to provide it. For all these years, I’ve never properly repaid my grandfather, but he always says he doesn’t need any payback from me. I know that to my grandfather, the best payoff is the child in your belly. He’s waiting for our child to be born. Seeing him shuffle along, I’m reminded of when I was a kid, falling over and over again, and my grandfather picking me up every time. At that time, my parents weren’t around to give me even a moment of warmth, and all I knew was my grandfather. I thought then that my grandfather was my whole world; with him, I could grow up carefree in his cradle, without worrying about anything. But as I grew, I realized I’d have to face many things myself, that my grandfather couldn’t shield me from everything.”

”Husband, I know that Lei Jian is very sad about Li Haixiao, and I understand your thoughts and inner plans. But I hope that you can understand that for the living, leaving this colorful world is a release for those suffering from illness. Haven’t they long wished to depart from this world? For them, if existing here means having life signs controlled by machines daily, they’d be better off dead. And if they can’t move in bed, having to rely on others even for the bathroom, how can they maintain their dignity? People can be so selfish, always seeing only their immediate benefits, never considering the feelings of those who are ill. Everyone alive hopes their loved ones will stay by their side, never leaving or forsaking them, because the departure of a loved one can bring a huge blow. But for those suffering unbearable pain, death is a release, yet for their loved ones, it’s torture. That’s the so-called cause and effect. Sometimes, if you open your heart a bit more, you’ll see the world differently. You can see the world with your eyes, or you can see it with your heart, and the world seen with the heart is entirely different. So, husband, don’t worry anymore. I believe that when the day comes, grandfather will have his day, and then you will need to make a choice. I know you won’t be able to decide because your grandfather raised you himself, encouraging you in your hardest times, giving you the confidence to stand back up. He’s the reason for everything you have today. If not for him, how could you have met me? Often, we should be thankful for our relatives; without them, where would we be now? Don’t always strive to take what isn’t yours from others. People should be content. I believe you’ve heard this saying, though it’s usually meant for couples: ’What’s meant to be will come, and what’s not won’t, no matter what. How many beauties are there under the heavens? Don’t be foolish in pursuit!’ These words apply to our situation as well. If something is fated to be yours, it will be; if not, you won’t keep it no matter how hard you try, right? If we living beings can understand this, then we won’t be so troubled anymore. Don’t let bad things disturb your peace of mind. Isn’t my grandfather still safely with us? Why dwell on these unhappy thoughts? While he’s still in this world, we should give him all we can and let him happily enjoy the last of his life, right? Seeing your grandfather happy should make you very joyful too.”

Hearing Ran Zhihan’s words, Zhang Yichen thought she made a lot of sense. Why not let his grandfather enjoy his last days happily? Why keep dwelling on unhappy thoughts and worry on his behalf? His grandfather had already worried about him for decades, so should he really make him worry further now? Absolutely not. He resolved to let his grandfather live his last days happily and carefree, no longer troubled by anything—and let him have the happiest time in the world before he left this world without regrets. Zhang Yichen was determined to make sure his grandfather would leave this world without regrets. How could he face himself otherwise?

”Wife, thank you,” he said. ”I’ve thought it through now. Since grandfather is still with us, let’s make sure he spends his last days happily and without worry about any of our affairs. Let him leave without any regrets. If I let grandfather leave this world with regrets, it would be my failure as a grandson. He gave up so much for me, his entire world. How could I possibly let him down? I’ll show him I’ve grown up, that I’ve become responsible, and that I can take care of everything he entrusted to me, safeguarding all the treasures he’s given me...”
