My Alleged Husband

Chapter 385: Chapter 364: Great Nourishing Soup_1

Ever since Old Master Zhang learned that his daughter-in-law was pregnant, he started cooking a variety of nourishing soups for her every day, including chicken soup, fish soup, bone broth—you name it! The variety was simply endless!

This morning, as soon as Ran Zhihan came downstairs and entered the living room, she saw the table was covered with all sorts of these tonic soups. It was truly irresistible, but she didn’t want to drink any more of them. She had been having these soups daily for two whole months, and her body just couldn’t keep up. Yet, whenever she saw her grandfather bustling about in the kitchen for her sake, her heart softened, and she couldn’t bring herself to refuse his kindness. How could she possibly break it to him? Wouldn’t such words break her grandfather’s heart? She had no choice but to endure it over and over again, but the mere sight of the soups was making her feel increasingly nauseous, which could very well be a sign of pregnancy, she guessed.

”Zhihan, you’re up! Come over and try this tonic soup I’ve cooked for you—it’s a new recipe I’ve concocted. It’s even more delicious than before. You should drink more for the sake of the baby. You won’t need to go to work from now on; you can just stay home every day, and Grandpa will cook and take care of you, okay? And I’ll make sure you’re well-nourished so you have enough strength to deliver the baby safely!”

”Grandpa, my stomach doesn’t feel very good today. Can I not drink the soup for now? I just want to rest a bit. Is it alright if I drink the soup after I’ve had some rest?”

Upon hearing his granddaughter-in-law complain about a stomachache, Old Master Zhang didn’t think about anything else and hurriedly pulled her toward the door. He wanted to take her to the hospital.

”Why is your stomach suddenly upset? Are you sick? This is no small matter; you’re not just one person now, but two. If you feel unwell, we must hurry to the hospital. Let’s go get you properly checked out, just in case your pregnancy is affected and you end up worse off!”

”Grandpa, I’m fine. I just need to rest a little and I’ll be all right. Let me get some sleep at home, okay? Once I wake up, I’ll be fine and I can drink the bone soup you made for me, okay?”

”How can that be okay? If you’re ill, we must go to the hospital. You’re carrying another life now, don’t you realize? It’s not just about the comfort of the child in your womb or just about dreaming of holding your baby. I want you to be safe and sound too. Surely you don’t want your baby to see their mother sick, right? Only when you’re healthy can your child be healthy too. Don’t you understand that? Stop being so stubborn. I can agree with you on other things, but not this one. We’re going to the hospital this instant, did you hear me?”

Feeling helpless, Ran Zhihan could only follow her grandfather to the hospital. After repeated examinations by the doctor, they discovered why her stomach was upset: the nourishing soups that were fine in moderation had caused constipation and other issues with frequent consumption during pregnancy. When Old Master Zhao heard that his concoctions had made his granddaughter-in-law ill, he was somewhat displeased. Why had his good intentions turned out badly? Was he really that useless? Could it be that because of his age, he was incapable of doing anything right? The more he thought about it, the sadder and more upset he became. Seeing her grandfather so downcast, Ran Zhihan felt remorseful and quickly reassured him, ”Don’t listen to the doctors spouting nonsense. Why should they dictate what happens between us? As long as we’re happy together, isn’t that enough? I know you made all those delicious soups with the best intentions. How could good intentions lead to bad consequences? Please don’t blame yourself too much. Perhaps I just haven’t been exercising enough lately, causing these issues. Don’t worry, from now on, I’ll make sure to drink more, have one more bowl of your soup each night, and get more exercise. That way, nothing wrong will happen. Grandpa, you still need to make soup for me in the future, so how can you be so down? If my precious son finds out that I’ve mistreated his great-grandpa, he definitely won’t forgive his mommy.”

”Zhihan, there’s no need to comfort me. I already know that it’s the continuous two months of tonic soups I made for you that has caused your stomach discomfort. If you kept drinking it, it could lead to intestinal obstruction during delivery, and the birth wouldn’t go smoothly. You wouldn’t want to suffer like that either. I just want you to have a safe and healthy childbirth.”

”Grandpa, please don’t overthink it. These things are utterly unfounded. Why would you believe what outsiders say? Isn’t it better for us to live our own lives well? Why should we listen to others’ idle talk? Though he is a doctor, not everything a doctor says is necessarily right. We shouldn’t blindly follow every word a doctor tells us. In the end, we might realize that the truth is different from what the doctor said. Grandpa, you should trust me—I’m a grown woman. You should believe that I have the ability to bring my son safely into this world. How could you doubt my responsibility toward my own son just because of a few words from a doctor? The son I give birth to will definitely be a healthy, plump boy. Business, all of this has nothing to do with you. Don’t take it to heart. Just being by my side is the biggest help. I know you’ve done so much for me over the years. Now that I’m pregnant, you’ve once again selflessly dedicated yourself to me. At your age, how can you still spend so much time in the kitchen making soup for me? It’s dangerous there, Grandpa. From now on, you’d better be by my side at all times and not sneak off to the kitchen anymore, okay? If my baby knew, he would be upset. He wouldn’t like to see his mama mistreating his great-grandpa!”

When Elder Zhang heard what his daughter-in-law was saying, he let out a big, hearty laugh. Hearing Old Master Zhang laugh so openly, Ran Zhihan understood that her grandfather would surely be the most loving person to her child, and she felt it was all worth it to persist in bringing this child into the world.
