Chapter 468: Chapter 17: The Ferocious Yellow-Throated Marten

In the bushes.

The bobcat was at a disadvantage the moment it encountered that thing.

Without sensing any breath or warning, it was suddenly pounced upon by something descending from the sky.

The bobcat, though terrified, relied on its years of hunting and combat experience to roll frantically, turning its head to bite back, forcing the creature off its back.

Even though the creature fell off, the crisis was not over.

The bobcat only felt a tuft of yellow fur flash before its eyes as the creature pounced again, trying to bite its throat.

The bobcat swung its front limbs, unleashing a flurry of cat punches.

Despite its injured forelimbs, it managed to keep its vital parts away from the biting attack.

That’s when the bobcat finally had a chance to cry out for help.

The attacker wanted to bite again.

But accompanied by a rush of fast, light footsteps.

A silver metallic flash, like a bolt of lightning, descended from the sky, slashing toward the attacker’s torso.

The attacker reacted extremely quickly.

It leaped to the side, its form flickering, attempting to hide on a rock.

Chen Wen’s reaction was not slow either; he turned his slash into a movement to swat, fiercely batting the attacker away.

However, the attacker twisted its body deftly in the air, landing atop the rock with only minor injuries.

As the sound of heavy breathing approached, Chen Wen reached down and picked up the bobcat lying on the ground.

Casually bestowing a [Animal Doctor] blessing.

The bobcat clung to Chen Wen’s clothing, perching on his shoulder: ”Be careful! That thing moves so fast, I can’t keep up with its speed!”

Chen Wen nodded slightly, staring at the attacker.

It was none other than an adult yellow-throated marten.

Though its body was slender, one could see the power surging within it.

The marten warily eyed Chen Wen, emitting a grumbling sound from its throat.

Meanwhile, Chen Wen hesitated as he eyed the marten.

His hesitation stemmed not only from the creature’s rank as a national Class II protected animal.

But also because this yellow-throated marten was a special animal with a personality: ferocious.

Can such a personality become a friend?

Moreover, it tried to hunt the bobcat and got injured by him.

But then Chen Wen remembered Zhou Zhijian’s words. He said he was attacked unprovoked by a yellow-throated marten; could it be this one?

If it was indeed this marten, it might know the location and situation of Yan Bian’s group.

If information could be obtained from it...

Let’s try!

”Why did you attack us?”

Chen Wen asked, initiating the marten’s intelligence.

The marten’s body tensed, its once icy gaze suddenly became dazed.

Moments later, it angrily looked at Chen Wen: ”Why did you attack me!”

”You attacked us first!”

Chen Wen said, pointing at the bobcat on his shoulder.

Seeing the bobcat, the marten’s anger became more evident: ”Nonsense! It invaded my new home first! And not long ago, you destroyed my previous home!”

”You destroyed my home, I destroy your home, doesn’t that make us even? What’s the problem with that?”

What on earth is it babbling about.

Chen Wen was confused: ”Wait, we just met, didn’t we? Think carefully?”

Upon hearing this, the marten straightened up, sniffing the air.

Hmm... the scent is indeed a bit different.

The marten’s anger subsided slightly, but it still responded cautiously: ”Alright, even if we just met, what are you doing in my territory?”

”Looking for someone.”

Chen Wen immediately replied: ”A person who walks on two legs, like me.”

Hearing this, the marten lifted its head, pointing in the direction Chen Wen had come from: ”There’s someone over there, and... you seem to have his scent on you!”

”Not him, someone else, a group of them.”

Chen Wen said.

The person the marten mentioned was the recently rescued Zhou Zhijian.

This time, the marten contemplated for a while before pointing to a nearby mountain: ”Over there.”

Seeing the marten so cooperatively point out the direction Yan Bian’s group went, Chen Wen was very pleased.

”Thank you for your help. If you don’t mind, I can help heal you. You seem injured.”

Chen Wen said, looking at the marten’s right hind leg.

During the skirmish earlier, when the marten landed, its leg hit a rock, resulting in a wound from the sharp edge.

Healing?

The marten was somewhat wary but said nonetheless: ”Sure, how will you heal me?”

Chen Wen spread his hands: ”Relax, just touch me, don’t worry, I won’t hurt you.”

To reassure the marten, Chen Wen also had the bobcat retreat behind him.

Seeing this, the marten cautiously approached Chen Wen and touched him with its paw before quickly retreating.

However, the [Animal Doctor] blessing followed along.

Feeling the comforting signals from its body, the marten’s wariness toward Chen Wen dissipated by more than half.

After retreating, it carefully regarded Chen Wen.

Moments later, it said: ”Alright, then I won’t hold the earlier incident against you. You and it, do not come near my home’s range again, or next time, I won’t show mercy!”

With that, the marten provocatively looked at the bobcat: ”Clumsy animals like it, in these woods, are just prey to be eaten, you better be careful.”

Though it couldn’t understand the marten’s words, the bobcat felt the provocation.

It emitted a series of growls, its gaze becoming extremely dangerous.

The marten showed no fear, instead responding with similar throat sounds.

Seeing both animals, neither of which were pushovers, about to start fighting again.

Chen Wen quickly extended his hand, interrupting their standoff.

”Alright, besides, I want to ask, which way is the easiest to get to the mountain from this forest?”

The marten hesitated for a moment before saying: ”If you give me some food, I can lead you there.”

Food?

That’s easy enough.

Chen Wen rummaged through his backpack and took out a sausage, made entirely of meat.

He peeled off the casing of the sausage and split it open, revealing the meat particles inside.

A unique aroma from modern society drifted towards the marten.

The marten couldn’t sit still.

Such a fragrant smell!

It stretched out its forepaw, quickly patting the ground: ”Put it here! Let me taste it!”

Chen Wen slowly placed the sausage in front of the marten.

The marten immediately used its forepaws to hold the sausage and began eating voraciously.

The marten ate quickly, and as Chen Wen handed half of the other sausage to the bobcat, it was gone in about a minute.

”Delicious! Is there more?”

The marten looked at the half-sausage next to the bobcat, eager for more.

Chen Wen’s eyes lit up, immediately saying: ”I have plenty, as long as you’re willing to help me find that group of people.”

”Deal!”

The marten agreed decisively.

This creature was even easier to bribe than the crested goshawk, which at least required food and shelter to follow him.

This one was coaxed into the team just with food.

At this point, the marten sensed the difference.

After hesitating for a while, it chose to use word exchange to gain Chen Wen’s wisdom.

Because it vaguely sensed that this deal was all profit, no loss!
