System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

Shanghai is very far from Long County, and Rongcheng is equally as far from Long County.

However, fortunately, in this modern information age, not only county hospitals but even the health clinics in towns might have their own website or public account where one can look up the hospital and staff’s credentials.

Except for a very few county hospitals, Du Lianshan would never have thought he would open the official website of a county hospital in a remote mountainous area of Xiang Province.

Moreover, during the search process, Du Lianshan had to try several different ’names’ to finally access the hospital’s website.

[Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture Longshan County People’s Hospital]

He indeed found Lu Cheng’s name in the personnel introduction of the emergency department, but finding it or not made no difference.

The information on Lu Cheng was very sparse: Lu Cheng, attending physician, undergraduate degree from Han City University.

Other than that, there was nothing more.

Du Lianshan was not unfamiliar with Han City University, but from what he understood, the clinical medicine program and affiliated teaching hospitals of Han City University were indeed quite different from the ’Xiangya Hospital’ and ’Huazhong Union Hospital’ he encountered.

This Lu Cheng, just an undergraduate, how could he remotely operate such things?

Furthermore, although Lu Cheng emphasized that there was no misunderstanding, Du Lianshan felt that when something unusual happens, there must be a reason. There must be some misunderstanding here.

It’s just that the ’amount of information’ revealed by Lu Cheng was too little, and Du Lianshan couldn’t find any clues at all.

Besides being stiff, Lu Cheng’s replies offered no other useful information.

”What on earth is going on here? Can’t even have a proper conversation, this shouldn’t be happening?” Du Lianshan wondered in his heart.

He never thought that one day the title of a professor in the hand surgery department at Huashan Hospital would be so ineffective.

Even if it were top professors from Jishuitan, Kyoto Third Hospital, or Modu Sixth Hospital, senior masters, if Du Lianshan called them, they wouldn’t treat him so coldly.

Of course, Lu Cheng’s perspective wasn’t wrong either.

Lu Cheng is an emergency department doctor; if he doesn’t plan to go into hand surgery, he really doesn’t need to care about a hand surgeon like you.

Moreover, with the sky high and the road long, if Lu Cheng meets a benefactor unwilling to indulge, you can’t resent him for it.

Being realistic, it actually clears away many entanglements and social obligations.

The bizarre results of the competition were noticeable even to the audience. Surely, the national microsurgery society, the hand surgery society as hosts, and the Sichuan Medical Association’s minimally invasive surgery society, hand surgery society as actual organizers would notice too.

Moreover, the organizers were even more concerned than the audience about whether there was any inside story in this competition.

After all, this was the first nationwide microsurgery skills competition, and being held in Rongcheng, the Sichuan Province health system had put in some effort.

If such a competition were found to have been tainted by unfair ’events,’ neither the host nor the organizing units would be able to save face.

Once a problem is identified, it must be addressed directly.

The participants from Xiangya Hospital with such ’outstanding’ scores in the vascular and nerve suturing tracks were, of course, the first to be questioned.

The real bigwigs wouldn’t directly question the participants; Xiangya Hospital had its own professors attending the ’academic conference’!

...

”Professor Tan, the young folks from your hospital seem quite vigorous in the neighboring competition?” The speaker was Professor Tao Zexi, the director of the hand surgery department at Huaxi Hospital and the chair of the Sichuan Province Hand Surgery Society.

The vascular surgery and nerve suturing tracks have always been major arenas for competition in hand surgery, closely tied to the currently most popular functional reconstruction surgery, of vital importance.

Though Huaxi Hospital’s hand surgery may not be the most renowned, it is still keen to participate in top-tier competition.

At that moment, Tan Zhongyuan was chatting with Professor Tian Wen from Jishuitan Hospital, and Professor Tao’s sudden approach made both their expressions subtly change.

Tian Wen feigned ignorance with a cheery question, ”Professor Tao, what’s happening next door? Has someone come to crash the event?”

The young physicians’ skill competition, in the eyes of such professors, is essentially a children’s game of ”playing house,” merely representing the teaching capability of different hospitals and the young talent reserve—it doesn’t significantly affect the big picture.

Professor Tao quickly shook his head and replied, ”No, Director Tian, it’s that Director Tan’s team is just excellent.”

”The competition results were somewhat unexpected. Indeed deserving of the century-old Xiangya.”

Tian Wen is the director of the hand surgery department at Jishuitan Hospital and the chairperson of the National Association of Hand Surgery. She is truly a top figure in hand surgery.

Tan Zhongyuan smilingly responded, ”Director Tian, Professor Tao is clearly being ironic with me. What’s really going on here.”

”Professor Tao? Have the people from our hospital caused any trouble for the competition?”

Tao Zexi continued shaking his head, ”Not at all, it’s actually made the competition more spectacular, more entertaining.”

”Director Tian, it’s like this, with Xiangya Hospital’s…” and then Tao Zexi gave a brief report on the competition results next door.

Tian Wen, an old hand at this, showed full surprise and curiosity upon hearing it, ”Professor Tan, how did you manage this team?”

”We really need to learn from you.”

”One person achieving good results could be a fluke, but when several people achieve simultaneously good results, it can’t just be explained by chance.”

Tan Zhongyuan said, ”Director Tian, you are also ribbing me.”

”This is really due to luck and coincidence.”
