System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

”What are you talking about?” Chen Song asked as he sat down in the passenger seat and fastened his seatbelt.

”Teacher Chen, it’s actually about the surgery in our department. Yesterday, the county leaders said that the technique I won an award for at the provincial level involves human experimentation, and the inspection team is investigating me...” Lu Cheng smiled bitterly.

Chen Song’s hand instinctively trembled slightly, and he replied, ”Isn’t this inspection group coming from the health department? Why are they investigating this?”

”Not the health department?” Lu Cheng looked at Chen Song in confusion and noticed Chen Song’s expression turning proud.

”Which inspection group takes the health department along and specifically targets hospitals?”

Chen Song’s expression was proud: ”Inspection groups mainly investigate corruption and gang-related incidents. The annual revenue of most hospitals might not even match the kickbacks from a single real estate project.”

”Furthermore, what surgeries have you conducted in clinical practice? First, they don’t violate ethics and morality. Second, they are an extension of pre-existing surgeries. Strictly speaking, it’s a new surgical technique, but in reality, it’s just a variant of an already mature technique.”

”If this needs dialectical evidence and testimony, it’s still a troublesome matter. Who would stand up to do such thankless tasks?”

”Generally speaking, the discovery of new technologies happens when they become large-scale without filing, approval, or review, then people might target you.”

”Isn’t there some misunderstanding here?”

Chen Song’s tone was quite relaxed.

Upon hearing Chen Song’s words, Lu Cheng became even more puzzled: ”But, our county’s health bureau called Director Lin from the neighboring province last night, and they were discussing this matter for at least half an hour.”

”Director Lin is facing the most severe punishment, and I also face a warning and a one-week suspension from practice, allegedly a decision by the State Health and Health Commission.”

”Moreover, they later said they’ve set their eyes on me.”

Chen Song shook his head: ”That’s absolutely impossible!~”

”Who the heck would be so idle as to target a small attending physician like you? Bring you down, then who gets the performance and KPIs?”

Lu Cheng: ”...”

Chen Song quickly softened his expression and explained in a low voice: ”Even though it sounds unpleasant, it’s still the truth.”

”Otherwise, think about it, why would someone call you when there’s an unexpected situation?”

”If you’re the one to be closely monitored, why would anyone call you to perform surgery? Isn’t that encouraging your ’human experimentation’?”

”More importantly, who said your suturing technique hasn’t been reported or professionally evaluated by a committee?” Chen Song added.

Lu Cheng immediately understood something: ”Teacher Chen, you mean?”

Chen Song patted his chest and shrugged: ”Me, I’m also part of a professional committee; I can actually assess the safety risks myself.”

”Forget it, don’t overthink it. If they question you about this again, just submit the evidence and materials at that time.”

”I think someone is using trivial matters as an excuse.” Chen Song privately concluded.

”Teacher Chen, what do you want to eat? I’m not very familiar with Ji City. If you don’t have any recommendations, I’ll just find a highly rated place at random.” Lu Cheng changed the subject.

With Professor Chen Song’s assurance, Lu Cheng’s heart settled, feeling his previous concerns were somewhat laughable.

”Anything is fine.”

...

Meanwhile, Tan Li really did make separate calls to Peng Hui, the head of the Regulatory and Integrated Supervision Division.

Peng Hui was a lady, with a loud voice: ”Director Tan, our office mainly takes charge of public health, medical health, and supervisory tasks such as identifying illegal acts in the medical service market.”

Tan Li, being from the Emergency Management Office, was aware of the duties of Peng Hui’s office: ”Director Peng, but your office also has the responsibility to guide and standardize law enforcement behavior, which was arranged during meetings.”

”On my end, I haven’t heard about Dr. Lu Cheng being investigated. Can I trouble you to ask around?”

”As the saying goes, ’Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.’ Dr. Lu Cheng has just helped us greatly, and we’re burning bridges before even crossing them; it’s ungrateful.”

”Of course, what I mean is, if Dr. Lu Cheng indeed has committed a serious offense, it should be investigated. But if it’s just a small issue, see if it can be minimized,” Tan Li spoke cautiously, fearing that his call might give Lu Cheng undue support and affect himself.

The Health Emergency Management Office takes responsibility for health emergencies and emergency medical rescue work, organizing the preparation of special plans.

So the incident with the inspection team being involved in a brawl and ending up hospitalized put the office under tremendous pressure. Admittedly, many in the office, after making inquiries, found their way to Lu Cheng.

If Lu Cheng’s issue were really severe, Tan Li couldn’t possibly not have heard anything about it.

After giving it some thought, Peng Hui said, ”Alright, Director Tan, I’ll make a call to inquire with Director Chen.”

”Director Chen Hao is in charge of the application of medical technology and health security for important meetings and major events and should be aware of this matter.”

The State Health and Health Commission operates like a prefectural city’s health bureau, with numerous departments and staff, each handling different projects, making complete information exchange impossible.

After hanging up, Peng Hui immediately called Director Chen Hao, but his line was busy. It took nearly ten minutes before it was finally connected.
