Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

”You know she’s ignoring me right now!” He’d figured it out—Charles Prescott was just making things difficult for him.

Hearing this, Anne Sutton walked in.

Charles Prescott and Sean Sutton both froze when they saw her enter.

Sean Sutton said, ”Anne.”

Her expression cold, Anne Sutton sat down to the side. ”What were you just talking about?”

’She’d heard everything!’

Yet when Sean Sutton saw Anne, he started to play dumb. ”We weren’t talking about anything. I just came to see you, and Charles said you weren’t awake yet.”

Anne Sutton looked toward Charles Prescott, then said to Sean Sutton, ”You listened to him and made me get rid of my child. Do you regret it now? If you hadn’t done that back then, you wouldn’t be here now, sucking up to him.”

Charles Prescott stiffened when he heard that.

Sean Sutton said, ”What are you talking about? I was the one who made that decision about the child. I was just afraid a baby would be a burden to you. It had nothing to do with Charles. Anne, you can’t keep making Charles the scapegoat.”

Though he had admitted everything to Charles Prescott, Sean Sutton didn’t dare blame him in front of Anne.

He knew the Sutton Family was now depending on Charles Prescott, a man he could not afford to offend.

He knew how to weigh his options!

Charles Prescott’s expression eased slightly upon hearing Sean Sutton’s words.

’He was indeed the one behind it, but how could he let someone else pin the blame on him?’

’If Sean Sutton didn’t know what was good for him, he would be the only one to suffer for it.’

Charles Prescott glanced at Anne Sutton. ”What time did you get back last night?”

Anne said, ”Is that any of your business?”

Sean Sutton jumped to Charles’s defense. ”Anne, how can you speak to Mr. Prescott like that?”

’The company’s problems,’ he thought, ’are all because of Anne.’

’If Anne hadn’t kept dwelling on the past and just gotten together with Charles Prescott, then Charles would be his son-in-law. How could he possibly ignore him then?’

Anne retorted, ”How am I supposed to speak to him? Would you be happy if I did as you wished and married him? Take a good look. A man like Charles Prescott—do you really think he’d marry me? President Sutton, it’s been three years, and it seems you still haven’t come to your senses.”

”You’re the one who isn’t clear-headed!” Sean Sutton shot back. ”You don’t understand how serious this is.”

He turned to Charles Prescott. ”Charles, Anne is just being childish. Please don’t hold it against her. I still really hope you two can be together! Nathan Fawcett has been gone for so long, and you’re the only one she has now. If you don’t look after her, then no one will.”

Anne seethed at his words.

’She was perfectly fine on her own! Why on earth did she need Charles Prescott to ’look after’ her?’

Hearing Sean Sutton’s words, Charles Prescott glanced at Anne. ”Your father wants me to marry you. What do you think?”

’He was deliberately giving her the choice!’

’Knowing full well she would never marry him!’

’This way, he could just tell Sean Sutton that she was the one who refused!’

Anne sneered, ”Marry you? As if you’re worthy.”

Charles Prescott said, ”I knew you wouldn’t be willing. Anne, you still hate me. I have something to attend to. You two can talk.”

With that, he stood up.

Sean Sutton watched him leave, then turned his gaze on Anne. ”He practically agreed! Why won’t you marry him? What is it you want? There are countless women who would love to marry Charles Prescott right now, so why aren’t you willing?”

Anne said to her father, ”You want money, don’t you?”

His company was short on cash; he had come today to get money from Charles Prescott.

When Anne brought it up, Sean Sutton asked, ”What, you have money?”

Anne said, ”I can give you money, but only if you publicly reveal what Charles Prescott made you do back then.”

’Nathan Fawcett had left her money!’

’Nathan was a Fawcett, after all. Even though he didn’t inherit the family fortune, his personal assets were substantial—more than enough to save Sean Sutton’s company!’

”...” Sean Sutton’s face fell the moment he heard this.

He wanted money, yes, but going up against Charles Prescott? Wasn’t that a death wish?

He said to Anne, ”Anne, be reasonable. We can’t win against them. Charles Prescott and his father call all the shots in Westhaven now! Even if I told everyone what happened back then, would anyone believe me? Can’t you stop being so naive? That child is gone! The most important thing now is to secure your hold on Charles Prescott! If you marry him, what couldn’t you have in the future? Your mother and I could ride your coattails!”

”...” Anne said, ”Have you still not figured out what kind of person he is? He would never marry me!”

”He will,” Sean Sutton insisted. ”As long as you agree, I have my ways to make him marry you!”

Seeing her father’s hopeless delusion, Anne stood up. ”It’s been three years,” she said, ”I can’t believe you haven’t changed one bit.”

’That servile nature, deep in his bones... it’s exactly the same as it was back then!’

’No matter how outrageous Charles Prescott acted, he just got used to it!’

’He’s hell-bent on tying the Sutton Family’s fate to Charles Prescott!’

Disappointed, Anne walked out the door.

She returned to the building behind hers and walked into the living room to find Charles Prescott sitting on the sofa, fiddling with a cup in his hands.

Anne snapped, ”Get the hell out!”

He looked up, his gaze calm. ”Did your father agree?”

”...”

A smirk played on Charles Prescott’s lips. Though he hadn’t been there, he knew exactly what Anne had said to Sean Sutton. ”Anne, you didn’t really think he would listen to you and expose what happened back then, did you? I suggest you get a grip. Stop dwelling on the past—you can’t get revenge! Even if you did manage to tell the world, the only one who would take the fall is your father. He’s the one who killed Nathan Fawcett’s child!”

”...” His words made her fingers tremble. She stared at him. ”Charles Prescott!”

Charles Prescott rose calmly to his feet, walked over to her, and gazed at her with unnerving gentleness. ”Back so soon? I heard you went to visit the Linden family. I thought you might stay and have fun for a couple more days. Looks like you were thrown out?”

’He knew all along that her trip to the Linden family wouldn’t end well.’

’After all, Ethan Linden has a fiancée!’

’The second Stella Shields showed up, Anne would just be made to look like a fool.’

Anne’s face darkened at the mention of Ethan Linden.

Though it hadn’t happened the way he described, she felt no need to explain anything about Ethan Linden to Charles Prescott. ”You can leave now.”

Charles Prescott raised his hand and gently tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. ”In Westhaven, in this family, you will only have a future if you’re with me. Instead of fighting me, why not just be my woman? Wouldn’t that be better? Why must you insist on making things hard for yourself?”

”Be your woman?” Anne said icily. ”The thought of it disgusts me. You’re filthy.”

He wasn’t angered by her words. His tone simply shifted from coaxing to threatening. ”The Sutton family isn’t doing so well right now. If I don’t step in to help, your father won’t last much longer.”
