Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

”Thank you, Chairman Fawcett.” Whatever the case, his words put Anne Sutton at ease.

Although she truly had no way to deal with Miles Prescott, her child was a different matter.

Since Nathan Fawcett was ignoring her—and she had no idea why he was suddenly upset—Anne Sutton, with nothing to do that afternoon, went to the hospital again.

The hospital was her workplace.

Besides, her parents had been in the hospital for the past two days, so she preferred being there over staying at the Fawcett Family estate.

At the hospital, Anne Sutton passed by the door to Charles Prescott’s room and stepped inside.

Charles Prescott was lying in his hospital bed. He looked surprised to see her enter. ”What are you doing here?”

”I came to see you,” Anne Sutton said, looking at him with a placid expression.

For a moment, Charles Prescott’s eyes lit up. Then, just as quickly, a thought seemed to strike him. ”You’d be that kind?”

Although he’d always held a place for her in his heart, he knew that after his accident, Anne Sutton was probably hoping he would just die.

Charles Prescott wasn’t a fool. Although his father hadn’t explicitly said Nathan Fawcett was responsible, he could tell from his attitude.

The car crash was no coincidence.

Anne Sutton looked at Charles Prescott. ”Seeing you laid up in bed makes me so happy, I just had to come take a look. It’s not every day I get to see Mr. Prescott in such a pathetic state!”

Hearing her call him pathetic, Charles Prescott’s face darkened. He threw himself back onto the bed and turned away, hiding his injured face from her view. ”Get out.”

’Damn it!’

’For her to see him looking like this... It was a fate worse than death for Charles Prescott.’

’He’d always been so handsome and dashing!’

Back when he and Anne Sutton were still together, Charles Prescott would never have let her visit him if he was sick.

He thought he looked awful when he was ill.

She knew how prideful Charles Prescott was.

And how vain!

He wouldn’t let anyone see him in this state.

’And now... her presence here was absolute torture for him.’

’Perfect.’

Anything that made him suffer brought Anne Sutton joy.

”What are you doing here?”

Miles Prescott’s voice suddenly rang out from behind her.

Anne Sutton jumped. She turned to see Miles Prescott arriving with Mia Shaw.

Mia Shaw’s gaze landed on Anne Sutton. ”Ms. Sutton.”

When Anne Sutton saw Mia Shaw, the corners of her mouth lifted. The thought that someone else would get to see Charles Prescott in his wretched state put her in a great mood. ”Well then, I won’t disturb you,” she said.

After she spoke, she walked out. Miles Prescott saw her and followed.

Anne Sutton felt a pang of fear as he followed her.

From yesterday through today, she had been wracking her brain for a way to protect the child in her womb.

Seeing Miles Prescott follow her sent a chill down her spine.

She turned her head to look at Miles Prescott and said, ”Why are you following me, Mr. Prescott?”

Miles Prescott stopped in his tracks. ”In the future, don’t show your face in my son’s room again.”

The thought of Charles Prescott being in this state because of her, while he himself couldn’t retaliate, made Miles Prescott burn with anger.

How could he possibly want to see her in Charles Prescott’s room?

Hearing Miles Prescott’s words, Anne Sutton didn’t retort like she had that morning. Instead, she used a remarkably polite tone. ”Actually, I’ve been thinking about it. My attitude during dinner yesterday was indeed poor. I came here now simply to apologize to you, Mr. Prescott.”

Miles Prescott: ”...”

’The last few times they met, Anne Sutton had been so defiant. Now she was actually apologizing?’

”What’s this? Don’t you have Nathan Fawcett backing you up now? I thought you weren’t afraid of anything.”

”How could I not be afraid?” said Anne Sutton. ”Nathan Fawcett only has two months. If his luck is bad, maybe not even two.”

Nathan Fawcett’s attitude at lunch especially had made Anne Sutton realize that the only person she could rely on was herself.

She was no match for Miles Prescott at the moment; continuing to oppose him would be suicide.

”...” Miles Prescott said, ”It’s good that you know. I can’t do anything to you now, but...”

’The moment Nathan Fawcett is gone, he would settle this score and make her pay for everything.’

Anne Sutton looked at Miles Prescott and said, ”I know you must hate me to death, Mr. Prescott. But really, there’s no need for that.”

Miles Prescott said, ”What, are you scared? Your personality doesn’t seem like someone who gets scared.”

”I’m just a small fry. What good would opposing you do me?” said Anne Sutton. ”I wasn’t thinking clearly yesterday, but I’ve figured it out today.”

”And what is it you’ve figured out?” Miles Prescott asked.

”You hate me so desperately because... you’re afraid the child in my womb will become the Fawcett Family heir, aren’t you? What if I told you that this child... is Charles Prescott’s?”

Miles Prescott froze, staring at Anne Sutton in disbelief. ”Are you joking?”

’How could the child possibly be Charles Prescott’s?’

’If it were, Charles wouldn’t have been so desperate.’

Anne Sutton said, ”Charles Prescott has other women and even another child on the side. I got angry with him, and that’s why we broke up. With Nathan Fawcett’s physical condition, how could I possibly get pregnant? So this child is actually... well, you get it. The only reason I didn’t tell Charles Prescott is because I’m angry at him and wanted to make him sweat. I never thought you’d take it seriously.”

”...” Miles Prescott stared at Anne Sutton, unable to tell if she was telling the truth.

’But what reason would she have to lie about something like this?’

’If this child really was Charles Prescott’s, then he wouldn’t have such a headache over it.’

’Not only could the child inherit from the Fawcett Family as a matter of course, but he and his son would no longer have to worry constantly that Chairman Fawcett would go back on his word.’

Anne Sutton said, ”I have other matters to attend to, so I’ll be leaving now. I’m telling you this only because I don’t want you, Mr. Prescott, to waste any more mental energy on pointless things. If this whole situation blows up, it won’t do either of us any good. So why bother?”

With that said, Anne Sutton turned and left without another word.

When Mrs. Sutton saw Anne Sutton had returned, she asked, ”Didn’t you go back to keep Nathan Fawcett company?”

”He was asleep, so I came over,” Anne Sutton replied.

She held her phone, looking at her messages.

Mrs. Sutton said, ”Your father and I just discussed it. We’re planning to be discharged first thing tomorrow morning. It’s nothing serious, after all.”

Anne Sutton looked up at her mother. ”What did the doctor say?”

”He wants me to stay for observation, but I don’t feel like anything is wrong. Being observed for a bit should be enough, right? Besides, I can’t get used to staying in the hospital. I can’t sleep well.”

”Alright,” Anne Sutton said. ”I’ll come and get you tomorrow.”

On the drive back from the hospital, Anne Sutton parked her car by the river and watched the scenery for a while.

It was already dark by the time she returned to the Fawcett estate. Stepping inside, she saw that Stella Shields had come over. Nathan Fawcett was there, too.

Stella Shields sat nearby, asking Nathan Fawcett, ”Nathan, are you alright?”

Nathan Fawcett covered his mouth with a handkerchief, coughing violently. After a long moment, he finally said, ”I’m not dead yet.”
