Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

Hearing what Anne Sutton said, Anna Linden replied, ”Oh, so that’s how it is. My apologies, I forgot.”

After speaking, she turned to Nathan Fawcett and asked, ”In that case, why did you keep eating?”

Stella Shields sat to one side, a mere observer, and even she found the scene painful to watch.

In truth, Dr. Linden was usually quite kind to her, but when it came to Nathan Fawcett, she was just so harsh.

Anna Linden sighed and said to Nathan Fawcett, ”Forget it. I’m done eating, so let’s call it a day. I didn’t realize you couldn’t handle spicy food. That was my mistake.”

After speaking, she said to the waiter, ”Check, please.”

After paying with her card, she stood up, glanced once at Nathan Fawcett, and walked straight out.

Stella Shields saw this and looked worriedly at Nathan Fawcett. ”Nathan, are you all right?”

Nathan Fawcett shook his head.

All Stella Shields could do was follow Anna Linden out.

Anne Sutton sat nearby, watching Nathan Fawcett. She could see the veins on his forehead bulging as he endured the pain.

She quickly poured him a glass of water. ”Here, drink some water. If you can’t eat spicy food, why did you force yourself? With your personality, you could have just told her directly, couldn’t you?”

He was like a different person in front of Dr. Linden.

Who else could treat him so terribly?

Anne Sutton couldn’t understand why, either.

After finishing the water Anne Sutton had poured, Nathan Fawcett recalled his mother’s words: ”My apologies, I forgot.”

’So casual, as if I meant nothing to her.’

’She knew perfectly well my health was bad...’

’Calling me here today felt like she was deliberately punishing me!’

’In my mother’s eyes, do I really deserve to die that much? Is that it?’

Anne Sutton called a waiter over and ordered two more dishes for him. The waiter had just taken the order when Nathan Fawcett said, ”There’s no need. I’m not eating!”

After speaking, he stood up.

He staggered the moment he was on his feet, a clear sign of how difficult the meal had been for him.

Anne Sutton reached out to steady him, but he wouldn’t allow it. He pushed her hand away and made his own way out.

All Anne Sutton could do was follow.

The butler was at the door and saw Nathan Fawcett. ”Sir.”

Then, he took hold of Nathan Fawcett to steady him.

Following behind Nathan Fawcett, Anne Sutton watched the scene, completely baffled about what had just happened.

Seeing Nathan Fawcett in this state, she was consumed with worry, and the joy she had felt from meeting Dr. Linden earlier had completely vanished.

She had previously held Anna Linden in special regard, but after meeting her today, her impression of the doctor had been severely tarnished.

Back at the Fawcett estate, Nathan Fawcett went straight to bed. The butler also called a doctor over. When the doctor found out how much spicy food he had eaten, he was so shocked he said Nathan had to be insane.

Anne Sutton made him something to eat in the kitchen and brought it upstairs.

Nathan Fawcett lay in bed, propped against the pillows with his eyes closed. His tightly furrowed brow made it clear he was in immense pain.

”Have some porridge,” Anne Sutton said.

She knew he hadn’t enjoyed a single thing he ate today. Between the overwhelming spiciness causing him pain, there was no way he could have possibly eaten enough.

Nathan Fawcett lay motionless on the bed without even opening his eyes.

Just then, Anne Sutton’s phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen. It was a text from an unfamiliar number: *Hello, Ms. Sutton. This is Stella Shields. How is Nathan? Is he going to be all right?*

Anne Sutton was a little surprised to be receiving a message from Stella Shields.

Nevertheless, Anne Sutton took her phone and stepped out of the room.

She called the number right back. Stella Shields answered almost immediately. ”Ms. Sutton.”

”How did you get my number?” Anne Sutton asked.

”I asked Mr. Prescott for it.”

”...” ’So it was Charles Prescott.’

’But that wasn’t what was important right now.’

”Can I ask you a question?” Anne Sutton inquired.

Her impression of Stella Shields hadn’t been very good before, but right now, she didn’t know who else to ask.

”Please, go ahead,” Stella Shields said.

”What’s the relationship between Nathan Fawcett and Dr. Linden? And what were they discussing over dinner today?”

At first, Anne Sutton thought that Nathan Fawcett had gone to see Dr. Linden for a medical consultation.

Now she realized that wasn’t the case, since Dr. Linden didn’t even know he was ill.

Stella Shields was silent for a moment.

”Nathan Fawcett was acting so abnormally,” Anne Sutton said. ”I know his business has nothing to do with me, I’m just... curious. If you don’t want to tell me, then forget it.”

’After all, Stella Shields and he are close. I’m not...’

’He doesn’t have to tell me everything about his life.’

’It would be perfectly normal for Stella Shields to be unwilling to talk about it.’

”Actually...” Stella Shields said, ”Dr. Linden is Nathan’s biological mother.”

”...” The news left Anne Sutton stunned for a moment. ’Nathan Fawcett’s mother is Anna Linden?’

’But...’

’He’s this sick, and Anna Linden hasn’t been treating him?’

’Forget that—she treated Nathan Fawcett the way she did today.’

’It’s too bizarre!’

”Are you kidding me?” Anne Sutton said. ”From the way Dr. Linden treated Nathan Fawcett today, it didn’t seem at all like how a mother would act toward her son.”

’Nathan Fawcett is so sick, yet she forced him to eat spicy food. It’s as if she wants him to die sooner!’

”There’s a lot I’m not clear on myself,” Stella Shields said. ”Just take good care of Nathan, please. He must be heartbroken right now.”

It had been the same way at Ethan’s funeral, the last time Nathan had seen Dr. Linden.

And today’s meal didn’t go well, either.

When Anne Sutton returned to the room, she saw the porridge on the table was untouched. Looking at Nathan Fawcett, she could imagine just how heartbroken he must feel.

Although Anne Sutton’s family wasn’t as wealthy as the Fawcett family, she had grown up with a very gentle mother. Whenever Anne was sick or in pain, her mother would care for her day and night without rest.

So, she simply couldn’t understand what Anna Linden was thinking.

”You’re really not going to drink the porridge?” Anne Sutton said.

When he ignored her, she sat down on the edge of the bed.

She recalled seeing Anna Linden at the hospital entrance that day, and how he had lost his temper with her afterward. It was starting to make sense now.

She mustered her courage, reached out, and took his hand. It was shockingly cold, like a dead person’s.

She looked at him. ”Nathan Fawcett!”

’I’m so strange,’ she thought. ’I’m supposed to be wishing for him to die an early death, but seeing him like this, I’m afraid he actually might be gone for good.’

Anne Sutton reached out to feel his forehead and found his face was a bit warm.

She looked at him and said, ”Are you feeling any better?”

He grabbed her hand, stopping her from touching him, and said irritably, ”I want to rest for a while.”

”I know,” Anne Sutton said. ”But get up and drink the porridge, then you can rest, all right? I’m worried about you like this. Didn’t you say you still had to prepare things for our baby? If you just drop dead, you won’t get the chance.”

Anne Sutton’s words seemed to soothe some of Nathan Fawcett’s agitation.

He opened his eyes to see the woman before him, her face full of concern as she watched him.

Nathan Fawcett looked at her and said in a low voice, ”If I dropped dead, wouldn’t you be thrilled?”
