Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

Anne Sutton nodded.

Vera Wells said, ”That’s incredible! Doesn’t that make you Dr. Linden’s daughter-in-law?”

Anne Sutton said, ”Dr. Linden never considered Nathan Fawcett her son, so how could I be her daughter-in-law? Besides, Nathan has been gone for a long time.”

Anne Sutton paused, then said melancholically, ”Don’t you think I’m strange? When he was still around, I thought he was a lot of trouble. But after he left, I often find myself thinking... if he were still here, would everything be different?”

Vera Wells sat beside her and looked at her. ”What’s past is past! Don’t dwell on it. You should find someone and live a good life from now on. Don’t keep sinking into the past. You have to look forward.”

Anne Sutton looked at Vera Wells and nodded. ”Mm.”

She had been trying to look forward, too, but she just couldn’t help it whenever she saw Charles Prescott.

The two of them chatted for a little while before Nathan Fawcett returned.

Seeing him appear at the door, Anne Sutton froze for a moment. She thought he had already left.

Vera Wells looked at Nathan Fawcett, also stunned. She said, ”Mr. Linden.”

Nathan Fawcett said to Vera Wells, ”You can go home. I’ll stay here with her.”

Anne Sutton: ”...”

Vera Wells wanted to refuse, but when Nathan Fawcett spoke, it didn’t sound like a discussion at all. It sounded like an order.

Besides, she’d been busy at the hospital all day and was actually exhausted.

She said to Anne Sutton, ”Anne, I’m heading back first.”

After speaking, Vera Wells walked out the door, gave Anne Sutton a surreptitious glance, and waved before leaving.

Soon, only the two of them were left in the hospital room.

Anne Sutton lay in bed, her eyes wide as she stared at the man before her.

Nathan Fawcett took off his coat and draped it over the back of a nearby chair.

It seemed he had no intention of leaving.

Anne Sutton said, ”It’s getting late. You should go home. I’ll be fine here at the hospital. Isn’t tomorrow Ian’s birthday? You still have to prepare!”

Nathan Fawcett glanced at her and said, ”You promised Ian you’d celebrate his birthday with him. Are you planning to break your word?”

This was the first birthday Ian would have with his mother by his side.

Hearing his words, Anne Sutton said, ”I’ll be there. I’ll be fine after I get some sleep.”

Nathan Fawcett sat beside her, watched her, and said, ”Sleep, then. I’ll take you over once you’re feeling better.”

Anne Sutton gazed at the man, wondering what he was thinking. ’He clearly seems to look down on me, yet now that I’m sick, he’s here taking care of me.’

...

In the morning, just as Anne Sutton woke up, she smelled the aroma of breakfast.

Nathan Fawcett had just returned with breakfast for her and set it aside.

Seeing she was awake, he looked at her and said, ”Have some congee.”

When Anne Sutton heard him, she started to sit up. Nathan Fawcett glanced at her, raised the head of her hospital bed, and moved the bedside table over for her.

Anne Sutton was a little dazed. She thought of his identity—Ethan Linden, Head of the Linden Family, that legendary man—and here he was, doing these small things for her.

She got up, feeling a bit awkward, and went to wash her face before coming back to eat the congee.

She looked at Nathan Fawcett and said, ”I’m fine now!”

He sat to the side, not listening to a word she said.

He was just on his phone, sending a message.

Anne Sutton lifted her gaze to Nathan Fawcett, surprised that he had stayed with her all night.

She asked, ”You didn’t sleep last night?”

Hearing her question, Nathan Fawcett glanced at her. Her complexion was already much better than the night before.

He said, ”Don’t overthink it. I only took care of you because I was afraid you wouldn’t be able to attend Ian’s birthday on time.”

Anne Sutton hadn’t been sure what he was up to, but hearing his words, she breathed a sigh of relief. ”Mm, I know.”

’She knows?’

Nathan Fawcett looked up at her. ”What do you know?”

Anne Sutton said, ”You’re willing to take care of me because of Nathan, right? You’re afraid I’ll actually die.”

Listening to her words, Nathan Fawcett averted his gaze.

He didn’t explain anything either.

Now that he had given up the identity of Nathan Fawcett, he no longer had any connection to her.

He just didn’t understand why seeing her reduce herself to such a state made him so angry.

After breakfast, Nathan Fawcett had someone arrange her discharge from the hospital. Anne Sutton got into his car with him; he was driving.

She sat in the passenger seat and said to Nathan Fawcett, ”Why don’t I just take a taxi back? You should go home and get some sleep.”

After all, it was Ian’s birthday today, and he was going to be busy later.

Nathan Fawcett gave her a cold look but didn’t say anything. It was clear, however, that her words had displeased him.

He reached over assertively and fastened her seatbelt for her.

Anne Sutton: ”...”

As he leaned closer, his face was right in front of hers. She stared at the man—his face so similar to Nathan Fawcett’s, so handsome and noble—and her breath caught.

’Even though I know they’re not the same person, I find that when I’m with him, I can’t help but see him as Nathan.’

Once the seatbelt was fastened, Nathan Fawcett drove away from the hospital.

Anne Sutton had nothing to say to him, so she closed her eyes, leaned against the window, and dozed off.

”We’re here,” Nathan Fawcett said in a low voice.

Anne Sutton opened her eyes and glanced outside, realizing they weren’t at her hotel but in front of an unfamiliar house.

There was a fountain at the entrance, and the house was built like a castle.

The surrounding landscaping was impeccable. It was hard to imagine that in a place like Downtown Veridia, where every inch of land is worth a fortune, someone could carve out such a large plot for a private residence.

’The Linden Family is just too extravagant!’

Anne Sutton asked, ”Where are we?”

Nathan Fawcett said, ”Get out of the car.”

He turned off the engine and got out.

Anne Sutton followed him out.

A security guard at the gate came up to them. ”Family Head.”

The uniform he wore bore the same ’L’ logo as the one on the car.

After getting out of the car, Anne Sutton stood there dumbfounded. Recognizing the logo on the guard’s uniform, she realized, ’This is the Linden estate?’

’He actually brought me to his home!’

Anne Sutton felt uneasy. She said to Nathan Fawcett, ”I should probably go back. My things are still at the hotel, and even though I’m going to Ian’s birthday party, I at least need to put on some makeup and change my clothes!”

’If this is the Linden home, Anna Linden will be here too!’

’Showing up like this is just too rude!’

Anne Sutton knew she must look like a complete mess.

Just as she finished speaking, a butler walked out from inside. Seeing Nathan Fawcett, the butler said, ”Sir.”

He had always been by Nathan Fawcett’s side before. Later, after Nathan Fawcett went to Anna Linden’s, the butler had gone with him, and she hadn’t been in contact with him for all these years.

Seeing him again now, Anne Sutton was a little dazed. ”Butler Walters.”

When Butler Walters saw Anne Sutton, he glanced at his master, wondering why he had brought her back. After all, his master had previously forbidden him from appearing before her, so as not to blow his cover.
