Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

He was so handsome, yet for some reason, he gave off the unsettling impression of being someone terrifying.

Nathan Fawcett wasn’t used to her words, so he immediately pressed his lips together and put on a menacing expression.

Anne Sutton was exasperated. She quickly reached out to pull at the corners of his mouth, lifting them up. ”See? See? You’re trying to be scary again.”

He grabbed her hand. ”Stop messing around!”

’She had some nerve, acting so brazenly in front of him!’

Anne Sutton said, ”I’m just playing along and you’re still not happy. Fine, I’m exhausted. I’m going to take a nap.”

She took off her coat and slippers and lay down beside him.

Nathan Fawcett gazed at the woman beside him. His body was so cold, but hers was so warm.

He lay down, wrapped his arms around her, and kissed her forehead.

’Even though he knew everything this woman did was for the inheritance, for his status, so that as long as he was alive, he could shelter her for one more day...’

’...his heartstrings were still tugged by her every move.’

It was evening by the time the two of them returned from the Sutton residence.

As they arrived home at sunset, the butler came to greet them. He said to Nathan Fawcett, ”Mr. Fawcett, Ms. Shields is here.”

Hearing Stella Shields’s name, Anne Sutton, who had been holding Nathan Fawcett’s hand, quickly let go.

’She had spent the whole day with him and had almost forgotten the man had a childhood sweetheart!’

’In reality, whatever happened with him had nothing to do with her.’

Nathan Fawcett looked at his empty hand, then at Anne Sutton walking ahead alone, but he said nothing.

The two entered the house. Seeing Nathan Fawcett, Stella Shields said, ”Nathan.”

Nathan Fawcett said, ”Why are you here?”

Stella Shields had been visiting him quite often lately.

However, she usually came over because of his mother.

Stella Shields said, ”Your mother asked me to come see how you’re doing. How’s your health?”

She had brought some food with her, which she now set on the table.

Nathan Fawcett glanced at the food. ”Did she have you bring this?”

Stella Shields shook her head. ”No, I bought it.”

”...” Standing to one side, Anne Sutton could clearly see the disappointment in Nathan Fawcett’s eyes. ’He probably thought his mother had sent him something.’

Stella Shields said to Nathan Fawcett, ”Nathan, your mother is just in a bad mood. You have to take care of yourself.”

Nathan Fawcett replied, ”I know. Have the butler take you home.”

The butler nodded.

Nathan Fawcett went upstairs by himself.

Stella Shields watched this unfold and sighed helplessly. She glanced at Anne Sutton. ”I’ll get going, then.”

...

As Stella Shields walked out the door, she ran right into Chairman Fawcett. Upon seeing her, he asked, ”What are you doing here?”

Stella Shields replied, ”I came to see Nathan.”

’He remembered that Charles Prescott was the one who had brought Stella Shields here, and that it had been his own idea at the time...’

But now that Nathan Fawcett and Anne Sutton were having a child, Chairman Fawcett felt it was no longer appropriate for her to keep visiting. He said to Stella Shields, ”Anne Sutton is pregnant now, so you shouldn’t come here anymore. As a pregnant woman, she’ll get upset if she sees you.”

Hearing Chairman Fawcett’s words, Stella Shields said, ”I understand. The main reason I’m here is that Auntie Linden asked me to come.”

”Lin...” Chairman Fawcett looked at Stella Shields. ”You mean Anna Linden?”

Stella Shields nodded. ”Yes.”

Thinking of his ex-wife, whom he hadn’t seen in years, Chairman Fawcett asked, ”How is she doing these days?”

Stella Shields replied, ”She’s working. She’s busy every day.”

Chairman Fawcett nodded. ”You may go.”

Back in his study, Chairman Fawcett turned on his computer and searched for news about Anna Linden. He discovered she had recently come to Westhaven for an academic exchange.

Ever since their divorce, when she left with their other son, she had never once returned to the city.

’And now she was here?’

’Did that mean...’

With this in mind, Chairman Fawcett called Dean Walters and asked him for Anna Linden’s contact information.

That day, Anna Linden was working overtime at the hospital. Ever since her son had passed away, she threw herself into her work every day, hoping it would numb the pain.

Just then, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen—it was an unknown number—and answered. ”Hello?”

”It’s me!”

Hearing Chairman Fawcett’s voice, Anna Linden froze, wishing she could hang up on the spot.

However, she actually had something she wanted to discuss with him, so she suppressed the urge and asked, ”What is it?”

Chairman Fawcett asked, ”You’re in Westhaven. Have you seen Nathan?”

”I have seen him. What about it?” Anna Linden retorted coldly.

Chairman Fawcett said, ”Nathan has missed you all these years. And you know about our son’s condition. Can’t you figure something out for him? I know you have a lot of connections in the medical world. Since you’ve already seen him, won’t you please help him?”

”Oh, I can,” Anna Linden said. ”It’s not impossible. I’ll save him on one condition: you let him come with me, let him take my last name, sever all his ties with the Fawcett Family, and renounce him as your son. Then, I’ll save him.”

”Why must you be so extreme?” Chairman Fawcett asked, his voice laced with exasperation. ”It’s been so many years. You never even let me see Ethan, not once. I let that go. But now you want to snatch Nathan away from me, too?”

”How dare you bring up Ethan?” At the mention of her recently deceased son, Anna Linden’s temper flared.

A wave of grief threatened to overwhelm her. She lashed out at Chairman Fawcett, ”Think back! I was pregnant for ten months, I gave up my career, and I gave you twin boys! And how did you treat me? I stuck by you, endured all the suffering of pregnancy, and nearly drove myself into a depression for you. Marrying you was the darkest Chapter of my life. Men are the most unreliable things on this earth. I was willing to give you one of the sons I went through hell to birth, and that was already doing right by you! What now? Your son is dying, so you suddenly remember me?”

”...” Chairman Fawcett fell silent for a moment before asking, ”Can you save Nathan?”

Anna Linden shot back, ”Is there anyone I can’t save when I set my mind to it?”

Chairman Fawcett gripped his phone tightly. After a moment’s hesitation, he said, ”As long as you can save him, I can cut all ties with him. Even if... even if he becomes like Ethan and never speaks to me again, I can accept that.”

’In the past, he never would have agreed to this.’

’He had been deeply unhappy when he’d let Anna Linden take one of their sons.’

’But...’

’Back then, given the state of their relationship, he worried that not letting her go might have driven her to her breaking point.’

’When she left with their son, she had sworn to make a clean break, that they would have nothing to do with each other for the rest of their lives. He thought she was just speaking out of anger, that she would get over it in time.’

’He never expected that she would refuse to yield for all these years. When Nathan Fawcett first got sick, he had sent people to find her, but she had shown no interest, even after hearing that her son was ill.’

’Now, she was actually willing to save their son. This was Nathan’s only chance, and he was willing to make any sacrifice for it.’

Anna Linden hadn’t expected Chairman Fawcett to agree so easily.

She asked, ”Have you thought this through?”
