Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

Chairman Fawcett nodded. ”Yes. As long as you can save him! The doctors say he only has a month left.”

Even if he didn’t agree, he would only have one month with his son. If things took a turn for the worse, he might not even have that long.

...

Anne Sutton washed her face in the bathroom. Nathan Fawcett was sitting on the sofa outside.

Just then, Chairman Fawcett walked in from outside. ”Nathan!”

Nathan Fawcett asked, ”What are you doing here?”

Chairman Fawcett walked over and sat down nearby. He looked at his son, then glanced at Anne Sutton.

Anne Sutton knew he wanted to speak with Nathan Fawcett alone, so she said, ”I’ll step out. You two can talk.”

She walked out the door, leaving Nathan Fawcett’s bedroom.

Chairman Fawcett sat down and said, ”I heard you saw your mother.”

Hearing his father’s words, Nathan Fawcett pursed his lips. ”What’s it to you?”

’All these years, he and Ethan... one without a father, the other without a mother. It was all his fault for treating their mother so poorly back then.’

That was why Nathan Fawcett couldn’t bring himself to feel any warmth toward his father.

Chairman Fawcett asked, ”Your mother... has she been well all these years?”

”Don’t you think it’s a bit hypocritical to be asking that now?” Nathan Fawcett shot back, looking at him.

Chairman Fawcett felt a pang of awkwardness at his son’s words.

”She’s not doing well at all,” Nathan Fawcett said.

’When Ethan was still around, she was probably doing okay.’

’But ever since Ethan Linden’s accident, his mother’s attitude had changed completely.’

’In the past, whenever she gave a lecture somewhere, Nathan Fawcett would find a way to go see her.’

’Even though his mother refused to acknowledge him, just watching her from a distance made him happy.’

’Fortunately, Ethan Linden was good to him. Though their parents were estranged, the brothers still kept in touch privately.’

’Ethan Linden would tell him things about their mother.’

’He just never expected...’

’And now, even Ethan was gone!’

...

Nathan Fawcett looked at Chairman Fawcett and said, ”Ethan had an accident. He’s dead.”

Chairman Fawcett froze. He and Anna Linden had been estranged for so long that he had no idea about their younger son. She had hidden it well, and he hadn’t been paying attention. If Nathan Fawcett hadn’t told him, he would have remained completely in the dark.

’But now, he understood...’

’He understood why Anna Linden had said what she did, asking him to give Nathan Fawcett to her.’

’So, she had already lost one son. Did she now want to use her other son as a replacement?’

’No wonder she came all the way to Westhaven!’

”Aren’t you busy with work today?” Nathan Fawcett asked sarcastically. ”Got some free time?”

”I’ve arranged it with your mother. We’re all having dinner together tomorrow night.”

”...” Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett looked at his father. ”Are you kidding me? She’s going to have dinner with you?”

”Let’s all go,” Chairman Fawcett said. ”It’s been so many years. So much time has passed since our falling out. She probably doesn’t hate me as much anymore.”

After he finished, Chairman Fawcett patted Nathan Fawcett’s shoulder.

...

When Anne Sutton returned, Chairman Fawcett had already left. Only Nathan Fawcett was sitting alone on the sofa.

”Your dad left?” she asked.

Nathan Fawcett looked up at Anne Sutton. ”Yeah.”

”You should go take a shower,” Anne Sutton said. ”I made some soup for you. You can have it when you get out.”

Nathan Fawcett looked at Anne Sutton, not wanting to move, but she urged him into the bathroom anyway.

By the time Anne Sutton had the soup ready, Nathan Fawcett was out of the shower.

He sat down, and she ladled some soup for him. ”Here, try it.”

Nathan Fawcett had just washed his hair, and it was still a little damp. He was still surprised that his father wanted him to have dinner with his mother tomorrow.

’He even suspected his father was lying to him.’

”Why the long face now?” Anne Sutton asked. ”Didn’t your dear Ms. Shields come to see you?”

Nathan Fawcett kept his head down, not wanting to talk.

Anne Sutton looked at his cold, aloof expression and couldn’t be bothered to press him further.

...

The next morning, Anne Sutton went to the hospital for a prenatal check-up and decided to stop by and see Vera Wells.

When Vera Wells saw her, she said, ”Oh, what brings you here?”

”I just wanted to come and see how you were doing,” Anne Sutton said.

As they were talking, they saw Anna Linden approaching, followed by a group of doctors, including Wendy Chambers. Seeing her, Anne Sutton quickly called out, ”Dr. Linden.”

Anna Linden stopped and glanced at her, but didn’t respond and was about to walk away. ”I need to talk to you about something,” Anne Sutton said quickly. ”Could I possibly treat you to lunch?”

Anna Linden paused. ”You need something from me?”

Anne Sutton nodded. ”Yes.”

Wendy Chambers, standing to the side, glared at Anne Sutton. ”Dr. Linden is busy. You’re on leave, so stop coming here and causing trouble! Always trying to grab attention. You’re unbelievable.”

’She already couldn’t stand Anne Sutton, and seeing her pestering Dr. Linden like this just made her even more exasperated.’

But Anna Linden just looked at Anne Sutton and said, ”Go wait for me in my office.”

Wendy Chambers’s eyes widened. She couldn’t believe Dr. Linden had actually agreed to see Anne Sutton.

Anne Sutton went to Anna Linden’s office, a temporary one the hospital had set up for her.

’She sat in the office for a while, thinking about Nathan Fawcett’s condition. She couldn’t stop worrying. Even though Nathan himself refused to come, she still wanted to see if Dr. Linden could take a look at him.’

’She admitted she was being nosy, but... they were mother and son. Surely no mother would stand by and watch her own son die.’

She waited in Anna Linden’s office for over an hour before the doctor returned.

Anne Sutton stood up. ”Dr. Linden.”

Anna Linden sat down and looked at her. ”Alright, spit it out. What do you want? Did Nathan Fawcett send you?”

”No,” Anne Sutton said. ”I just had something I wanted to ask you.”

Anna Linden gave her a dismissive look. ”What is it?”

”It’s about Nathan Fawcett’s medical records. I was wondering if you’ve seen them. If not, would you have time to take a look? I know your medical expertise is unparalleled. With you, there might be a sliver of hope. I don’t know why you dislike your own son, but... I still hope you’ll consider it.”

Anna Linden didn’t answer Anne Sutton’s question directly. Instead, her voice grew heavy. ”To be honest, I was quite disappointed when I heard you were a doctor at this hospital.”

”...” Anne Sutton looked at her, confused.

Anna Linden said, ”I’ve seen your résumé. You’re considered quite talented. And yet... you were willing to go to the Fawcett family and become a tool, just to bear them a child?”

”...” Anna Linden’s words made Anne Sutton’s face sting with humiliation.

’Her only goal had been to escape Charles Prescott, but hearing Anna Linden’s words now, she felt a wave of shame.’

Anna Linden looked at her. ”Forget it. That’s your business. Not every woman in this world has a backbone, and you clearly don’t. As for my business with Nathan Fawcett, I don’t need you to meddle. I’ve seen his medical records. Even I can’t save him.”

Anne Sutton’s hands clenched into tight fists. ’Not even Dr. Linden can save him?’
