Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

Anna Linden continued, ”I’m human, not a god. Aren’t I? You’re a doctor too, so you should know what I’m talking about.”

Anne Sutton had come to see Anna Linden just to give it a try. Hearing her say this, she realized there was truly no hope for Nathan Fawcett.

Anne looked at Anna Linden and, settling for the next best thing, said, ”Nathan Fawcett... he has a bad temper, but... he’s exceptionally fond of you, his mother. Could you... be a little nicer to him? Just think of it as keeping him company in his final days. Can you do that?”

Anne just felt that it would be so unfair to Nathan if he passed away just like this.

She only hoped that Nathan could make some happy memories with his mother in his final days.

Anna Linden looked up at Anne and said, ”You seem to care a lot about him.”

Anne said, ”I just think his situation is pitiful.”

Anna Linden said, ”You can go. I’ll consider your suggestion.”

...

Anne didn’t know if that was a yes or not, but she had said what she needed to say.

She had wanted to ask Anna Linden to a meal, but Anna Linden said she was busy, so Anne left.

When Anne Sutton got home, Nathan Fawcett was sitting on the sofa by himself, his head down as he flipped through a book.

It was rare to see him sitting quietly and reading.

Chairman Fawcett was also there today.

Seeing the two of them, Anne said, ”Chairman.”

Nathan looked at her. ”Where did you go? You ran off first thing in the morning.”

”I went to the hospital for a prenatal check-up.”

Hearing this, Chairman Fawcett said, ”My dear child, how could you go for a check-up without having someone go with you?”

Anne smiled. ”I work in obstetrics myself. Everyone there is a colleague, so it’s no big deal for me to go alone. Besides, Nathan’s not well, so I didn’t want him to come with me.”

Nathan looked at her. He knew she hadn’t asked him to go, probably afraid he would run into his mother at the hospital and create an awkward scene.

Chairman Fawcett said, ”Anne, our Nathan is so lucky to have married such a wonderful wife.”

Hearing Chairman Fawcett’s words, Anne glanced at Nathan, feeling a little guilty.

’After all, I used to wish he would just die sooner!’

’How could I possibly deserve such praise from the Chairman?’

Anne said to Nathan, ”What do you want to eat for dinner tonight, Nathan? I’ll make it.”

Nathan glanced at her. ’So she’s putting on an act just because Dad praised her!’

Chairman Fawcett said, ”No need, we’ll be eating out tonight. You should eat at home! I’ve already told the kitchen to make you some extra-special dishes.”

”Oh, I see.” Anne hadn’t expected them to go out to eat.

After all, besides eating with his mother, Nathan never went out for social engagements.

But if they were going out, she was happy to have the free time. It saved her the trouble of cooking for Nathan.

...

When Nathan came back that night, it was already after ten o’clock, and Anne had already been asleep for a while.

She was lying in bed, hugging a pillow.

Nathan walked in, sat down on the edge of the bed, and looked at the woman sleeping soundly in the glow of the nightlight. He reached out and took her hand.

The chill from his cold hand woke Anne. She opened her eyes, looked at him, and said, ”You’re back?”

”Did I wake you?”

Anne didn’t have the heart to say his hand was too cold.

She always felt a little uncomfortable whenever he got close to her.

She looked at him and asked, ”Did you have a good time at dinner?”

He seemed to be in a pretty good mood.

Nathan said, ”I had dinner with my mother today.”

”...” Hearing this, Anne sat up, her eyes sparkling. She seemed even more excited than he was. ”Really?”

’To think he had dinner with Anna Linden!’

”No wonder you seem so happy,” she said. ”She didn’t give you a hard time today, did she?”

Anne was a little worried.

Nathan shook his head. ”No.”

”That’s good.”

He looked at her, held her hand, and said, ”She’s going back to Veridia, and she asked me to go back with her. I want to go stay with her for a few days.”

”...” Anne was also happy to hear this. ’It seems Dr. Linden isn’t so unreasonable after all.’

’People really do have a soft spot, after all!’

’My visit to her today wasn’t completely useless.’

Anne said, ”You should go! You must be so happy to be able to stay with your mother.”

”Can’t wait for me to leave?” Nathan looked at her.

Anne said, ”It’s not that. It’s just... you’re going to do something that makes you happy.”

Even Anna Linden couldn’t save him now, given the state of his health.

’He doesn’t have many days left!’

’Of course I want him to be happy.’

Nathan looked at Anne and said, ”It’s just that... after I leave, we might never see each other again.”

”...” His words stunned Anne for a moment.

She knew what he meant.

’This could be our final goodbye.’

After all, he didn’t have much time left.

Anne saw him holding her hand. Although it was still cold, she didn’t mind it anymore.

She said sincerely, ”Nathan, you have to take care of yourself. If your mother tries to make you eat spicy food like before, don’t just put up with it. If you’re not happy there, remember to come back. I’ll make you something delicious!”

Hearing her words, Nathan nodded gently. ”Okay.”

With her, he felt cherished.

Anne asked, ”So, when are you leaving?”

”Tomorrow night.”

”That soon?” Anne looked at him. She was happy that he was happy to be going with his mother, but she hadn’t expected that he would be leaving as soon as tomorrow night.

Nathan said, ”Let’s go shopping tomorrow. We still haven’t bought anything for the baby.”

Anne nodded. ”Okay.”

...

Nathan sat on the edge of the bed, watching her. Perhaps because they had spent some time together, the thought of being apart from her now felt a little strange.

But this was the one regret of his life. Being able to spend his final days with his mother was the happiest thing he could imagine.

Anne said, ”It’s getting late, you should get some sleep. If you’re leaving tomorrow, don’t you have things to pack in the morning?”

Nathan nodded. ”Yeah.”

He stood up and went to take a shower.

Anne lay in bed. She had been sleeping soundly before, but now she found she couldn’t fall back asleep.

Even though she told herself every day that Nathan would be gone soon, she hadn’t expected their parting to come so quickly.

...

The next morning, Anne woke up very early and went to the market with the household’s auntie to buy some fresh ingredients.

When she returned, she saw that Nathan was already up.

He was standing at the door, watching her. ”Where did you go?” he asked.

Anne had the auntie take the groceries inside and said, ”I went to buy ingredients. I want to cook a meal for you. I’m worried you won’t be used to the food there. You went to bed late last night, you should go back to sleep for a bit.”

As she spoke, she walked through the door and asked the auntie to wash the vegetables first.

...

Then she went upstairs.
