Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

Nathan Fawcett froze, his phone in hand. ”I’m very busy,” he said. ”I don’t have the time.”

Anne Sutton looked at him. ”Then just send me the address. I’ll go by myself.”

”I forgot.”

”...” Anne Sutton’s eyes widened when she heard that.

’How could he forget something like that?’

She felt this man was deliberately brushing her off.

Anne Sutton was displeased, but she didn’t know how to argue with a near-stranger.

After all, she couldn’t expect him to care about Nathan Fawcett’s affairs as much as she did.

...

The car was quiet. ”The man is dead,” Nathan Fawcett said. ”What’s there to see?”

”Forget it. I don’t want to talk to you anymore.”

Perhaps sensing her dissatisfaction, Nathan Fawcett stopped talking to her.

The driver stopped at the hotel entrance. Anne Sutton said, ”I’m here. Thank you for the ride back, Mr. Linden.”

Nathan Fawcett glanced up. Anne Sutton was staying at a four-star hotel.

’This hotel probably costs a few hundred a night.’

To Nathan Fawcett, it seemed rather humble.

He asked, ”Are you short on money?”

Anne Sutton, who was just about to open the door and get out, paused at his question. ”Not at all!”

”Then why stay here?” Nathan Fawcett asked.

Anne Sutton glanced at the hotel outside, then back at Nathan Fawcett. ”Is there a problem?”

’A four-star place isn’t bad.’

’Anne Sutton felt she was already being quite extravagant!’

Nathan Fawcett said, ”I heard from Nathan that he left you all his assets when he passed. How can you be living so frugally?”

”...” Anne Sutton thought of Nathan Fawcett. It was true—he had left her a sum of money and the house in his name. He’d had someone transfer them to her after he returned to Veridia with Anna Linden.

Although Charles Prescott and Miles Prescott were now in charge of the Fawcett Family, it didn’t actually have a major impact on her life.

It was just that...

Anne Sutton said, ”You’re the one who’s used to luxury. That’s why you think this place is no good.”

She opened the car door and got out.

Nathan Fawcett watched her retreating figure. He had thought that after leaving her all his assets, and with the child no longer with her, she would be living a very comfortable life.

But her life didn’t seem to be anything like what he’d imagined.

The driver looked at Nathan Fawcett and said, ”Sir, the butler asked me to remind you that you have a meeting later.”

”Let’s go,” Nathan Fawcett said.

...

Anne Sutton returned to the hotel, tidied up a bit, and then lay on the bed for a while.

She had come to Veridia for a vacation, but now she’d lost all interest.

Vera Wells had to work and couldn’t spend time with her, and on her own, there was nowhere she really wanted to go.

As she lay there, she couldn’t stop thinking about the man, Mr. Linden.

’He really does look so much like Nathan Fawcett...’

’But he’s just Nathan Fawcett’s younger brother.’

...

With nothing else to do, she went to the hospital in the afternoon when Vera Wells asked her to help out.

Vera Wells looked at her with a smile. ”Most people can’t wait to go somewhere and let loose on their vacation. But you? You’re just looking for an excuse to work, aren’t you?”

”It’s because I missed you, isn’t it?” Anne Sutton replied. ”There’s not much to do wandering around by myself. I feel more settled when I have something to do.”

”If I were as hardworking as you, I’d have been promoted ages ago. But... you’ve been working your tail off for years without a promotion. Don’t you think there’s something wrong with our leadership? Instead, they let that Wendy Chambers woman get promoted right over your head.”

At the mention of this, Anne Sutton paused. ”You know how things are at our hospital.”

’She actually knew why she was never promoted. It was because of Charles Prescott...’

’The hospital staff are on good terms with Charles Prescott, and now that he’s the heir to the Fawcett Family, who wouldn’t try to stay on his good side?’

’He definitely held a grudge against her.’

’They’d had a major falling out over the child.’

’He came looking for her later, but she sent him away.’

’After that, Charles Prescott never helped her again. Instead, he frequently made trouble for her at work, enjoying her misfortune.’

’It was as if he were trying to force her to curry favor with him.’

’But there was no way she would ever do that.’

Vera Wells looked at Anne Sutton. ”By the way, what’s the deal with you and that Mr. Linden? I’m just saying, if you had him in your corner, wouldn’t Charles Prescott have to back off?”

Anne Sutton replied, ”How could that happen? You’re dreaming! In this world, who can you rely on but yourself?”

Ever since she learned that even her own father was unreliable, Anne Sutton never wanted to rely on anyone ever again.

No wonder she was looked down upon for mentioning Nathan Fawcett in front of Ethan Linden.

”Wait here for me,” Vera Wells said. ”I’ll be right back.”

With that, she walked out.

Just as Vera Wells went out, a little boy walked in.

Anne Sutton froze when she saw him. She realized the little guy looked a bit like Nathan Fawcett.

’She wondered if she was coming down with something; lately, it seemed everyone looked like Nathan Fawcett to her.’

The little fellow wasn’t afraid of her. He ran straight over and hid under her desk.

Soon, footsteps echoed from outside.

”Where did he go?”

”How did he disappear in the blink of an eye?”

”That kid... all he needed was a shot...”

Anne Sutton looked at the boy hiding by her desk. He looked to be about three years old. ’If my baby were still here,’ she thought, ’he would... be this big by now!’

He put a finger to his lips, shushing her. As Anne Sutton saw the people walk past the doorway, she found that, for some reason, she didn’t give him away. Instead, she became his accomplice.

After the people outside had run off elsewhere, Anne Sutton finally asked, ”What’s wrong?”

The little boy said, ”They want to give me a shot, and I don’t want one.”

”Getting a shot is for your own good,” Anne Sutton said.

”I don’t want to! It’ll hurt.”

”...A shot might hurt a little, but if you get sick, you’ll feel much worse.”

”Do you like getting shots?” he asked, looking at Anne Sutton curiously.

Anne Sutton thought for a moment. ”I don’t. But sometimes you have to get them.”

”Why? Why do people have to do things they don’t like?”

Seeing him ask such a profound question at such a young age, Anne Sutton smiled. ”What’s your name?”

”My name is Ian,” the boy said, looking at Anne Sutton. ”You’re really pretty, Miss!”

Being praised so sincerely by the little guy made Anne Sutton’s heart swell. ”Thank you. You’re very cute, too. Your mom is so lucky to have a sweet boy like you.”

”No, she’s not,” Ian said unhappily. ”She’s always busy with work. She never comes home to see me. Ian’s not a happy boy. Except for my daddy, nobody likes me.”

”...” Hearing this, Anne Sutton gently ruffled his hair. ”I’m sure that’s not true! How could anyone not like someone as cute as you?”

”Well, Miss, you’re pretty. Does everyone like you?”

”...” Anne Sutton fell silent. ’No, they don’t.’

’He’s so young, but his questions cut straight to the heart!’
