Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

Mrs. Prescott said, ”She said she was busy. I’ll have her come back to see you in a couple of days.”

”No!” Leo cried. ”I want my mommy.”

He was making an awful scene. Mrs. Prescott watched her grandson’s tantrum, growing very worried.

”Leo!” Anne Sutton called out.

Hearing Anne Sutton’s voice, Leo looked up at her.

Mrs. Prescott stared at Anne Sutton. ”What are you doing here?”

”Leo’s mom asked me to come and check on him,” Anne Sutton said.

”My mommy?” Leo asked, his crying ceasing.

”That’s right,” Anne Sutton said. ”Don’t cry. Come on, let me take a picture of you for your mom. She said she misses you!”

Anne Sutton took a photo with her phone and sent it to Sylvia Warren.

Her hands were ice-cold as she did all this.

She remembered what Charles Prescott had said—that her child should have never existed.

’So what gives his child the right to remain in this world?’

Sylvia Warren hadn’t expected Anne Sutton to send her a photo of Leo and was overjoyed. ”Ms. Sutton, thank you.”

She then sent a couple of voice messages for Leo, asking Anne Sutton to play them for him.

Leo was delighted to hear his mother’s voice. After all, when Charles Prescott had driven Sylvia Warren away, he had cut off all contact between her, Leo, and Mrs. Prescott.

Mrs. Prescott sat to one side, watching Leo. ”Thank you for coming to see him,” she said. ”If you hadn’t, he would have kept crying, and I really didn’t know what to do.”

”Where’s Charles Prescott?” Anne Sutton asked curiously.

At this, Mrs. Prescott looked at Anne Sutton, asking defensively, ”Why are you looking for him?”

Mrs. Prescott knew that Anne Sutton and Charles Prescott had been together in the past.

Anne Sutton had even visited her before.

But later, when Anne Sutton got together with Nathan Fawcett, Mrs. Prescott was well aware of that, too.

’Now that Nathan Fawcett is gone, she isn’t going to get ideas about my precious grandson again, is she?’

Before Anne Sutton could answer, the old woman began speaking her mind. ”Sutton, I know you and Charles were engaged once, but that’s all in the past. He has to call you ’Aunt’ now! And even though Nathan Fawcett is gone, our Charles would never marry a widow! Don’t you go pestering him! If you’re looking for a new partner, I can introduce you to some other men.”

”...” Anne Sutton’s mouth twitched as she watched Mrs. Prescott act as if her grandson was the most precious treasure on earth.

’Isn’t it a bit much, saying all this right to my face?’

”Don’t worry,” Anne Sutton said. ”I’m only here today to check on Leo for Vera. If Charles Prescott isn’t home, I’d like to take Leo to see her.”

The moment Anne Sutton finished speaking, Leo threw his arms around her. ”I want to see my mommy.”

Anne Sutton nodded. ”Alright, Auntie will take you.”

”He said he has work to deal with today,” Mrs. Prescott said. ”He won’t be back until tonight.”

Seeing that Anne Sutton wasn’t after Charles, Mrs. Prescott relaxed.

”Then I’ll take Leo out to see his mother. I’ll bring him back later,” Anne Sutton said.

”Alright,” Mrs. Prescott said. ”I was just wanting to go out for a walk myself, but I didn’t have anyone to watch the boy. You can go.”

She had gone to great trouble to come to Veridia and wanted to look around.

Taking Leo anywhere was a hassle. Now that Anne Sutton was offering to watch him, she couldn’t be happier.

Anne Sutton glanced at Leo and led him out of the Prescott home.

Leo walked beside her. ”Auntie, where’s my mommy?”

”We’ll be there soon.” Anne Sutton, holding him, found a park and stopped.

The park had a lake. Anne Sutton led Leo to the water’s edge. He seemed quite cheerful, looking up at her with a happy expression. ”Is my mommy coming soon?”

Anne Sutton looked at him. The little boy strongly resembled Charles Prescott. The resemblance only made her remember how callously Charles had disposed of her own baby.

’In that case, his son might as well join my baby in death!’

’My life has been meaningless for years, anyway.’

’Why should he get to be so arrogant after what he did, while I’m left to endure this bone-deep, gnawing grief?’

But Leo’s eyes were so clear, nothing like his father’s.

Looking at him, Anne Sutton realized she couldn’t bring herself to do it.

The thought made her despise herself. ’Anne Sutton, Anne Sutton!’

’Have you forgotten how your own child died?’

’When Charles Prescott did what he did, did he ever once consider that your child was innocent?’

’Why are you getting soft now?’

She cursed herself internally.

She felt as if a demon deep inside was forcing her to make a terrible decision.

...

Just then, her phone rang.

Anne Sutton answered. Ian’s voice came through the receiver. ”Auntie!”

His voice was so soft and sweet. As he spoke, an image of his adorable face appeared in her mind.

Anne Sutton felt her heart instantly begin to heal.

She glanced down at Leo. The little boy wasn’t old, but he was fearless. He had nearly stumbled into the lake. Anne Sutton quickly grabbed him and pulled him back onto the park’s cobblestone path.

She sat down and had Leo sit beside her before continuing the call. ”Ian, what’s up?”

Ian said, ”It’s my birthday tomorrow. Can you come?”

”Tomorrow...” Tomorrow was the anniversary of her baby’s death.

It was the hardest day of the year for her.

”I have plans tomorrow,” Anne Sutton said.

”You can’t come see me?” Ian wheedled. ”I’ll be really disappointed if you don’t come, Auntie.”

”...” Anne Sutton said, ”But your parents will be there, won’t they? They’ll be with you!”

”But you’re my friend, Auntie! Can you really not come? It took me forever to convince Dad! Please, Auntie! Please come, okay?”

He didn’t know why, but he just really liked this auntie he had only met once.

”Alright,” Anne Sutton said.

It was the feeling of being desperately needed.

For the past few years, she had sealed herself off in her own world, barely even contacting her family. Anne Sutton suspected she was depressed.

When Ian asked her to come, she just agreed.

”You said yes?” Ian asked excitedly.

Anne Sutton nodded. ”Mhm.”

”Dad, Auntie said yes!” Before she hung up, Anne Sutton heard Ian’s excited voice on the other end.

’Uh...’

’His dad is there, too?’

Nathan Fawcett was sitting on the sofa. When he saw Ian happily announce the news, the tense expression on his own face relaxed.

He’d thought Anne Sutton wouldn’t agree.

’Looks like Ian is quite useful after all!’

...

Having agreed to go to Ian’s birthday, Anne Sutton suddenly felt like she had something to look forward to. She no longer wanted to do anything foolish.

She glanced at Leo beside her, the thought of harming him now gone.

She decided to go buy a gift for Ian, taking Leo along with her to the mall.

As she was browsing, a call came from Charles Prescott. ”Where are you?”

He sounded very tense.
