Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

Anne Sutton froze, looking at the man beside her in disbelief. ’What did he just say?’

’He said he’s planning to marry me?’

’Doesn’t he have a wife and kids?’

Charles Prescott said, ”You must be joking, Mr. Linden. What if my aunt takes you seriously? She is my uncle Nathan Fawcett’s wife. Although my uncle has passed away, they were very much in love. I would advise you to be a little more sensible, Mr. Linden.”

Hearing Charles Prescott’s words, Nathan Fawcett replied, ”Thank you for the reminder, Mr. Prescott, but... I like her very much. You said it yourself—your uncle has passed away. He’s been gone for several years. Anne can’t be expected to remain a widow for him her entire life, can she?”

Charles Prescott stared at Mr. Linden in disbelief. ’Does he really not mind that Anne Sutton is a widow?’

’Wouldn’t he be completely humiliated if he married a widow?’

Before Charles Prescott could dwell on it, Nathan Fawcett looked at Anne Sutton, took her hand, walked right past him, and straight out the door.

Once outside, Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett and immediately snatched her hand from his grasp. ”What do you think you’re doing?”

Nathan Fawcett saw how she reacted to him just holding her hand as if facing a mortal enemy. ”He’s about to marry Mia Shaw, and he doesn’t want to marry you,” he said. ”You heard him. His words were dripping with contempt because you’re a widow. So what... are you still afraid he’ll get the wrong idea about us?”

”Of course not!” Anne Sutton said. ”I’m not interested in him in the slightest.”

”Then why were you just forcing him to marry you?”

”...You were eavesdropping on us!” Anne Sutton glared at him. ’He has absolutely no manners.’

Nathan Fawcett said, ”I was just passing by. Don’t you find your own actions ridiculous?”

”It’s not like I actually want him to marry me,” Anne Sutton explained. ”He thinks marrying a widow like me would be humiliating for him. He would never marry me, I know that for a fact. I only said it *because* I knew he would refuse.”

Nathan Fawcett looked at Anne Sutton. ”Well, you’re not a complete idiot for figuring that out.”

”You’re the idiot!” Anne Sutton shot back. ”What exactly are you trying to pull? There were so many people back there, and you just had to say you were going to marry me? Did you even think about the consequences?”

”...” Nathan Fawcett raised an eyebrow. ”What consequences?”

”You’re a married man with a kid! If word gets out about this, my reputation will be ruined!”

’A powerful man like him probably doesn’t care who he’s associated with. In these situations, women are always seen as the weaker party. In other people’s eyes, even if he really did get involved with someone, they’d just assume it was the woman’s fault—that she was the shameless one. No one would ever think he was the one who pursued her!’

Nathan Fawcett looked at her, his voice low. ”Who told you I was married?”

”You’re not?” Anne Sutton said. ”You have a son. Weren’t you on the phone with your son this morning?”

Listening to her, Nathan Fawcett stared into her eyes and said, ”I am not married.”

Anne Sutton let out a sigh of relief. ”Oh, I see.”

’That’s good!’

’At least I’m not getting involved with a married man!’

’Otherwise, if word got out, I’d probably even lose my job.’

Seeing her relieved expression, Nathan Fawcett said, ”What, are you happy to hear I’m not married?”

”I was just afraid your wife would suddenly pop out and call me a homewrecker.”

Nathan Fawcett looked at her and said, ”Don’t worry, that won’t happen.”

”Thank you for defending me in front of Charles Prescott,” Anne Sutton said. ”But please don’t do it again! Now I’ll never be able to clear things up.”

’The main problem is that once you tell one lie, you have to tell countless more to cover it up.’

Nathan Fawcett said, ”Why do you need to explain your actions to him?”

”He already looks down on me,” Anne Sutton said. ”When he finds out you were just saying that for show, there’s no telling how he’ll ridicule me.”

Nathan Fawcett looked at her. ”Who says I was just saying it for show?”

Anne Sutton looked at him, completely confused. ”What do you mean?”

”I don’t mind making what I just said a reality.”

”...” Anne Sutton looked at him, bewildered. ’What he just said... doesn’t that mean he wants to marry me?’

Anne Sutton laughed.

Nathan Fawcett asked, ”What’s so funny?”

”Mr. Linden, please stop joking around with me,” Anne Sutton said. ”You’re well aware of my circumstances. And besides, correct me if I’m wrong, but shouldn’t you be calling me Sister-in-law?”

Nathan Fawcett faltered at the mention of ”Sister-in-law.”

The driver had already pulled the car over. He opened the door and said, ”Get in.”

Anne Sutton got into the car, and Nathan Fawcett followed her in.

As the two of them sat together, Anne Sutton took out her phone and said, ”Take me to the Full Moon Hotel.”

She had left her luggage there before going out for drinks the day before.

Who would have thought she would end up spending the night with Nathan Fawcett instead of going back?

Right now, she just wanted to go back and change her clothes.

Nathan Fawcett said to the driver, ”Do as she says.”

The driver nodded.

The two of them sat in the car, and the awkward atmosphere was getting to Anne Sutton. She turned to Nathan Fawcett and asked, ”I thought you hated me? Why did you help me back there?”

Nathan Fawcett glanced at her and said, ”For Nathan’s sake.”

Anne Sutton looked at him. ”Nathan...”

Nathan Fawcett said with a blank expression, ”He was my older brother, after all. Just think of it as me taking care of you on his behalf.”

Anne said, ”Then why are you still saying things that give people the wrong idea? If you know I’m your sister-in-law, you could at least be a little more respectful.”

”Haven’t you ever heard the saying?” Nathan Fawcett was looking at his phone, but glanced up at her when he heard her words.

”What saying?” Anne asked.

”Nothing’s tastier than a dumpling, and nothing’s more fun than a sister-in-law.”

”You...” Anne Sutton stared at him, aghast, her face flushing with anger. ”You’re despicable!”

”Me, despicable? Weren’t you the one all over me last night?”

”That was because I was drunk!” Thinking about last night, Anne wanted to kill herself.

The urge to quit drinking grew even stronger.

’If I had, I wouldn’t be here right now, getting laughed at by him!’

Speaking of which, something felt off to Anne Sutton. She looked at Nathan Fawcett. ”Wait, I was drunk, but you weren’t. Why did you take me to a hotel? You could have just left me alone. I was with my friends last night.”

’She almost suspected he had done it on purpose!’

’But looking at him, his multi-million-dollar car, and his handsome face... he’d have to be crazy to do something like that intentionally.’

...

Nathan Fawcett glanced at her. ”Like I said, you were all over me. I just took you to a hotel out of convenience.”

”You were taking advantage of my situation. I could call the police.”

”Then go ahead and call them!” Nathan Fawcett went back to looking at his phone.

Anne Sutton sat to the side, staring at him without saying another word.

She fell silent, her gaze fixed on his profile. She found herself thinking about her time with Nathan Fawcett... a few years had passed, but it felt like yesterday.

Anne Sutton asked, ”Do you know where Nathan’s grave is? Can you take me to see him?”
