Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

Mrs. Sutton was almost unaccustomed to Anne Sutton being so thoughtful.

Mr. Sutton sat to one side, feeling a little miffed. He saw Anne Sutton fussing over her mother but ignoring him completely—he even had to eat his own congee. ”Your father was injured too, you know. How come I don’t see this much concern for me?”

Anne Sutton shot her father an irritated look. ”You have plenty of people to care about you! You’re not like my mom. If I don’t look after her, she’ll have no one.”

Ever since she’d found out what kind of man her father truly was, Anne Sutton had been deeply disappointed in him, and her attitude was no longer as warm as it once was.

Mr. Sutton said, ”You ungrateful child! Every word out of your mouth is so snide! I’m your father!”

Anne Sutton couldn’t be bothered to argue with him.

Sharon Sutton sat to one side, looking at her phone.

David Hayes was texting, asking her how she was doing.

She and David Hayes had met the last time her parents went to the Sutton estate.

His apology had been so sincere that they’d gotten back together.

Just then, the door to the hospital room was pushed open. It was the butler, and following behind him was Nathan Fawcett.

Because Nathan Fawcett was in poor health, he wore a mask even inside the hospital, obscuring most of his face.

Even so, the moment Nathan Fawcett appeared, Sean Sutton and Mrs. Sutton, who had been eating their congee, froze in fright.

Even Sharon Sutton was startled enough to hide her phone.

Seeing this, Anne Sutton turned to Nathan Fawcett and asked, ”What are you doing here?”

His sudden appearance had startled her whole family.

Never mind the rest of her family; even Anne Sutton herself was often startled by the sudden sight of Nathan Fawcett.

Nathan Fawcett said, ”I came to see your family.”

Sean Sutton cleared his throat. ”Thank you, Mr. Fawcett, but we’re all right. It’s nothing serious.”

Anne Sutton said, ”I’m looking after them. You should head back once you’re finished with your business.”

’It’s just that having him here is too terrifying!’

’She knew his health was poor, so he probably didn’t have much patience for this.’

But to her surprise, Nathan Fawcett wasn’t in a hurry. ”It’s fine. I’ll wait for you here.”

”...”

Anne Sutton was left speechless.

’Why is he being so patient today?’

Hearing this, Mrs. Sutton said to Anne, ”Anne, Mr. Fawcett is waiting for you. You should go on back! Your father and I are full!”

”But you haven’t finished,” Anne Sutton said, glancing at the bowl.

Mrs. Sutton said, ”I really can’t eat anymore.”

’Although it was wonderful being taken care of by her daughter, she had completely lost her appetite now.’

’With Nathan Fawcett here, forget eating—she felt it was hard to even breathe.’

’It felt wrong to sacrifice her daughter like this, but given the circumstances, it couldn’t be helped.’

Even Sharon Sutton chimed in, ”Yeah, sis, you should go! Don’t keep your brother-in-law waiting too long. We’ll be fine, really. I can look after Mom and Dad.”

...

Anne Sutton looked at her family, who couldn’t wait to send her away... No, that wasn’t right. ’They’re desperate for me to take Nathan Fawcett with me.’ She knew they were terrified of him; forcing them to interact was just too much to ask.

She had no choice but to stand up. ”All right, then. I’ll head back for today.”

’I barely even had a chance to sit down.’

’I wanted to stay with them a little longer.’

’But the moment Nathan Fawcett showed up, I got tossed out right along with him.’

Anne Sutton gathered her things and looked at Nathan Fawcett. ”Let’s go.”

As they left the hospital room, Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett and said, ”You finished your chat already? That was fast.”

’She’d thought he was here to see Charles Prescott and would stay in his room for a while.’

Nathan Fawcett said, ”I just came to take a look at Charles Prescott. There was nothing to talk about.”

”Oh. So are we going straight home now?”

Nathan Fawcett nodded.

His gaze fell on Anne Sutton. On the way back yesterday, she had been so preoccupied with her family’s injuries that she’d barely said a word.

But today... her mood was clearly much better.

Nathan Fawcett asked, ”You seem happy that Charles Prescott got hurt.”

”...” Anne Sutton touched the tip of her nose. ”I’m not. Why would you say that?”

Seeing her try to feign innocence, Nathan Fawcett’s lips curved into a slight smile.

He rarely smiled. The sight of it made Anne Sutton stop in her tracks. ’Am I hallucinating?!’

’Did that man just... smile?’

Anne Sutton quickly changed the subject. ”Well, people really shouldn’t do bad things. See? Your older brother was mocking me yesterday, and today he got his comeuppance.”

The butler followed behind the pair. He knew Nathan Fawcett had arranged the whole thing—that he’d done it all to stand up for her. But Anne Sutton, of course, had no idea.

Nathan Fawcett said, ”Mm.”

Anne Sutton looked up at him. ”This wasn’t your doing, was it?”

”...I’m not that bored,” Nathan Fawcett denied.

The butler: ”...”

’And who was it that insisted on coming to the hospital yesterday the moment he heard the Sutton family was in trouble?’

’And who, after learning Miles Prescott was involved, gave the Prescott father and son duo such a generous ’gift’?’

Since Nathan Fawcett denied it, Anne Sutton figured she was probably overthinking things. ”You’re right. You’re in such poor health, all you do is focus on recuperating. Where would you find the energy for something like this?”

’Besides...’

’Charles Prescott has done so many things before, and Nathan never made things difficult for him.’

’In his eyes, I’m completely insignificant.’

’Why would he offend the Prescott father and son for my sake?’

’They’re the real family, after all!’

Nathan Fawcett: ”...”

’So in her mind, I’m just some useless invalid?’

’Forget it.’

’It doesn’t matter what she thinks. As long as she and the baby are safe, that’s all that matters.’

...

As the two of them came out of the hospital and were about to leave, a car pulled up to the entrance. A woman, flanked by assistants, stepped out.

People from the hospital rushed out to greet her.

The hospital director was among them.

Standing beside Nathan Fawcett, Anne Sutton saw the newcomer and realized it was Dr. Anna Linden, a doctor she had seen on television.

Anne Sutton was surprised to see Dr. Linden, as she’d just recently read online that the doctor’s son had passed away.

’Logically, she should be taking time off, shouldn’t she?’

’But she’s already throwing herself back into her work?’

’Or maybe...’

’...it was just a rumor, and it wasn’t her son who died?’

The director tried to shake Dr. Linden’s hand. After all, it was a great honor for a doctor of her renown to visit their hospital.

Anna Linden glanced at the director but didn’t extend her hand, simply walking past him and into the building.

Anne Sutton and Nathan Fawcett were standing right by the main entrance. Seeing the procession, she quickly tugged on Nathan’s arm to get him to move out of the way.

Nathan Fawcett, however, stood his ground and didn’t move.

Dr. Linden and the director approached. Upon seeing Nathan Fawcett, the director said, ”Mr. Fawcett.”

Nathan Fawcett stood there, his face cold and his gaze fixed on Dr. Linden, completely ignoring the director.

The director felt awkward. Needing to attend to his guest, he turned to Anne Sutton and asked, ”Is Mr. Fawcett feeling all right?”

Anne Sutton shook her head. ”He’s fine.”

”Well, please take good care of him.”

With that, the director gave Nathan Fawcett a nod before turning to Anna Linden. ”Dr. Linden, this way, please.”

Anna Linden stared at Nathan Fawcett for a couple of seconds before her gaze shifted to Anne Sutton.

Seeing the doctor looking at her, Anne Sutton mustered her courage and said, ”Hello, Dr. Linden.”
