Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

”Then why didn’t you agree before, when I told you to go see her for treatment?”

Nathan Fawcett looked at Anne Sutton, his lips pursed. ’Was that even up to me?’

’That was up to Dr. Linden!’

He had always thought that the sicker he got, the more his mother would pay attention to him.

But who would have thought that when Ethan died, his mother would actually regret that it hadn’t been him instead.

’How could she possibly agree to save me?’

Nathan Fawcett leaned against the pillow, his thoughts unreadable.

Seeing him like this, Anne Sutton realized he was upset again.

But she had no idea what she’d said wrong, so she just kept quiet.

「The next morning.」

Charles Prescott was in the hospital. Mia Shaw had stayed with him all night.

Even though Anne Sutton held a special place in Charles Prescott’s heart, he was a man who hated being alone.

It was impossible for him to be without a woman by his side.

For instance, knowing Anne Sutton would never come to the hospital to care for him, he had kept Mia Shaw there instead.

It had to be said, his behavior was a textbook example of a scumbag.

Miles Prescott walked in and saw Mia Shaw was still there. ”Mia Shaw,” he said.

Mia Shaw looked up at Miles Prescott. ”Uncle Prescott.”

”Thank you for last night. You can go home for now.” Miles Prescott clearly had something to discuss with Charles.

Since Miles Prescott was asking her to leave, Mia Shaw couldn’t very well be shameless enough to stay.

She stood up, said a quick goodbye to Charles Prescott, and left the room.

Charles Prescott looked at his father. ”Dad, what brings you here? I’m doing fine.”

”...” Miles Prescott’s expression darkened as he looked at him.

”Mia Shaw and I are just friends,” Charles Prescott said.

”Friends?” Miles Prescott repeated, his tone laced with sarcasm. ”Yes, ’just friends’.”

Miles Prescott knew exactly what kind of man his son was.

He was always surrounded by women.

Not that Miles Prescott ever objected to it.

He had always believed women were mere accessories for men. A man of Charles’s caliber had no need to devote himself entirely to just one.

After Mia Shaw left, Charles Prescott picked up the bowl of porridge and took a couple of sips.

Miles Prescott asked, ”Let me ask you something. Is Anne Sutton’s child yours?”

He had thought about it the previous night and concluded that Anne Sutton was most likely lying to him.

Still, he couldn’t entirely rule out the possibility.

That’s why he had to come and ask Charles Prescott to get a clear answer.

Charles Prescott was in the middle of eating his porridge and choked on his father’s words. He looked up at Miles Prescott. ”Why would you ask that?”

”She told me the child is yours.”

Charles Prescott was speechless.

’What kind of bullshit is she spouting?’

’If the child were mine, would I be this frantic?’

In all the years he and Anne had been together, he had never once touched her.

He could be with any other woman he wanted, but she... she was different.

She hadn’t been willing, and he hadn’t forced her.

Back then, he had always assumed they would get married eventually. That she was his, that she would never leave. He had been so sure of himself.

But he never expected...

And now, in just a few days, she had not only given herself to Nathan Fawcett but was also pregnant with his child, threatening Nathan’s very position as the heir to the Fawcett Group.

For the first time in his life, he felt like a complete failure as a man.

...

Miles Prescott stared at his son. ”Did you and Anne Sutton ever... Is there any possibility that her child is yours?”

Charles looked at his father, knowing he was itching to get rid of Anne Sutton’s baby.

As if guided by some unseen force, Charles Prescott nodded. ”Yes.”

He knew what his father was capable of. He didn’t want a repeat of what had happened to the Sutton Family.

More importantly, he didn’t want his father to just make Anne Sutton disappear one day!

Even if the child wasn’t his, he was going to handle this situation himself.

Since Charles had confirmed it, Miles didn’t doubt him.

After all, Charles and Anne had been together for years, and Charles had always been so protective of her. He refused to believe his own son could be so inept as to have not slept with her.

”If this child is really yours, then that’s for the best!” Miles said. ”Things will be much less complicated.”

This would also stop the Fawcett Family from finding another woman to bear Nathan Fawcett a child!

Having confirmed this, Miles Prescott left.

Charles Prescott set down his bowl and leaned back against the pillows. He thought of Anne Sutton. ’That woman... Is she just pretending I don’t exist?’

...

First thing in the morning, Anne Sutton drove to the hospital to pick up her parents and Sharon, who were being discharged.

After telling Miles Prescott that the baby was Charles’s, she felt a little more at ease.

He probably wouldn’t make a move on her until he’d figured out the truth.

As much as she couldn’t wait to see Charles Prescott get what he deserved, she couldn’t be too brazen in front of them.

Until she secured the inheritance rights to the Fawcett Group, she had to hold back.

After all, flexibility was key to achieving her goals.

Before she even reached her parents’ hospital room, she was intercepted by Charles Prescott.

With his injured leg, he sat in a wheelchair, looking as though he had been waiting for her on purpose.

Anne Sutton asked calmly, ”What are you doing here?”

Charles Prescott stared at her. ”You told my dad the baby you’re carrying is mine?”

’Fucking hell. She was so ridiculous he almost had to laugh.’

’The nerve of her to make such a claim.’

Anne Sutton nodded. ”Yes.”

’For Charles to be asking this, his father must have already questioned him.’

”What fucking kid?” Charles demanded. ”Did I reproduce asexually or something? When you were with me, you were all prim and proper, wouldn’t even let me sleep with you. Now you’re pregnant with Nathan Fawcett’s kid and you’re trying to pin it on me?”

Faced with Charles Prescott’s aggressive questioning, Anne Sutton didn’t panic. Her voice became soft and frail. ”I had no choice. If I hadn’t said that, who knows if your father would have just had me killed? Didn’t you say you liked me? You wouldn’t want to push the person you like to their death, would you?”

’That day he took me home... he must have been worried about me.’

’I don’t know what his reasons are, but since he doesn’t seem to want to see me dead, it should be okay to ask for his help, right?’

”So you said it on purpose,” Charles said, ”because you were certain I wouldn’t expose you?”

Hearing his words, Anne Sutton’s heart finally settled.

When she had told the lie, her biggest fear was that Charles wouldn’t play along. If he had coordinated his story with Miles, Miles would have known she was lying.

But from the sound of it, he hadn’t exposed her to his father.

Anne Sutton looked at Charles Prescott. ”Thank you, Mr. Prescott.”

’She did have some grasp of his personality, after all.’

For years, he had been unwilling to let his father interfere in his business.

He wasn’t a child, after all, and he hated being controlled.

”Since you’re so grateful, you can start by having a better attitude toward me from now on,” Charles said, putting on a haughty air. ”Piss me off again, and I’ll go straight to my dad and tell him the truth. We’ll see how he ’takes care of you’ then.”
