Surviving The Fourth Calamity

Chapter 599: Chapter 397: An Auction Not Suited for Hill

Hill had long known that Santos was poor, so the remaining gold coins from the Magic Tower certainly couldn’t buy much.

But he really hadn’t expected that the items here would start the auction at 10,000 gold coins.

And they were just some good-looking junk that was otherwise useless.

Hill sighed inwardly but still maintained a serious expression on his face.

Even though it was a disguised face, he still had to keep up appearances.

He touched the Space Ring, and in these past few months, according to the ordinary equipment left by Santos, Hill had also made some enhanced versions.

Hill planned to see if there were similar items for sale at the auction, at least to get an idea of the prices.

But what did he need gold coins for?

In fact, this world, which seemed chaotic, actually had connections that could be clearly seen.

A so-called Goddess of Gold Coins with intermediate divine power, could actually manage to unify the currency of the entire world.

The people of this world might not see it clearly, but as soon as one encounters the outside world, one would immediately realize how incredible this is.

Hill only intended to buy some raw materials or books, and left the rest aside.

No matter the world, what temples of deities are best at is playing with hidden dangers, meaning they always leave backdoors in the equipment they sell.

The Noble Temple is especially good at this play, so it’s quite normal for mages to despise them in their hearts.

After several rounds of auction to warm up the crowd, the auctioneer Lawson finally got to the main part.

All the junk-like items were bought by those young and excited noble offspring, and Hill wondered if there really was any foolhardy, pampered noble who would bring these to the battlefield.

However, if someone indeed used the Light Magic while fighting the Undead Tribe, maybe they could survive!

Such an earnest fool would be worth watching.

Hill soon found out what their higher-tier currency was.

Crystal Cards handmade by the Goddess of Gold Coins herself.

Divided into White Crystal Cards worth 10,000 gold coins, Blue Crystal Cards worth 100,000 gold coins, and Gold Crystal Cards worth 1 million gold coins.

This might already be common knowledge; the library in Santos didn’t have books about such day-to-day matters, only some history books mentioned the creation of the monetary system by the Goddess of Gold Coins.

Hill glanced at the progress of the auction; their current main target was knights.

The knights of this world, like the Radiant Knights of Gerns, were all of the Divine Grace type.

But even after following the Sun God of Teraxil, the Radiant Knights Order still held light as their inner conviction, not just to protect the Sun God.

So, they were powerful yet still adhered to their own will.

When knights of this world become legendary, they completely turn into zealous followers of their deities.

The moment they assimilated with the law, they handed over their entire selves to their gods.

However, the number of legendary knights was also sufficiently large in contrast.

In other worlds, knights found it very difficult to find the Aura of Law, like Spencer, who had the strength already but just couldn’t open the door right in front of him.

The key in his hand needed a special opportunity to unlock that lock.

And the Aura of Law in this world, almost turned into an automatic door by the will of those deities; as long as one is devout enough, standing at the doorway would be greeted with a welcoming salutation.

Thus, the number of legendary knights in this world is really quite large, even more so than priests.

After all, priests like the Priest class need to divide the authorities of deities, while knights demand much less divine power from their gods.

If William hadn’t first gone to the Gerns World and acquired that legendary Weave, this world would indeed be quite troublesome for the Undead Tribe!

Hill propped his cheek with a bored expression, tapping out a rhythm on the table with his fingers.

The Square Shields and Small Round Shields of those knights, the two-handed swords and spears, even including the side swords, all had extremely uniform designs, apart from some functional differences, their ugliness was quite consistent.

However, these items sold quite quickly.

A Mithril Greatshield had already started to be sold for Blue Crystal Cards, 1,000 blue.

Hill watched as they jumped from a starting price of 1 million gold coins straight to White Crystal Cards, and finally, a bid with Blue Crystal Cards decided the fate.

He watched with interest as the coffee table in front of him changed from brown to white, and then to blue, as the currency of the bids changed.

Hill discreetly searched and discovered a joystick on his right-hand side; with a push, the color of the table changed.

If someone had already switched to a higher currency, the joystick could only be pushed to progress to a higher level and couldn’t return to a lower one.

A very interesting invention, it appeared that the commerce of the Goddess of Gold Coins did have some capability.

The bidding atmosphere outside was actually very lively, yet Hill felt nothing of it.

In his eyes, it would be fine if the weapons were a bit ugly, but the Alchemy Arrays on them were too rudimentary.

Hill couldn’t feel their enthusiasm at all; even the apprentices of Teraxil in Alchemy would produce better things than these.

Hill suddenly felt that Santos wasn’t that poor anymore.

After all, there were several knight’s greatswords in his private warehouse, each valued at 1000 blue crystal cards!

However, Hill had already dismissed the idea of selling those weapons.

Santos, poor as he acted, hadn’t dared to sell these weapons, which surely meant there was something fishy about their origins.

Either the archmage himself had gone rogue, or these were the fruits of some underhanded dealings.

After all, with just over 100 years, there certainly would be records of them officially.

Hill didn’t want to acknowledge a fake mentor, only to share in the consequences.

The auction of the knights’ items came to an end, entering the intermission, and Lawson stepped away from the auction table, replaced by two young auctioneers.

One was a beautiful girl with a languorous voice, golden hair cascading to her calves, with an incredibly seductive figure dressed in a form-fitting gown.

The other was a handsome young man with a magnetic voice, wearing a smile like sunshine upon his face.

They seemed like regular auctioneers for this venue, but didn’t yet have the qualifications to lead such high-profile auctions, appearing only to warm up the crowd during breaks.

They were there to auction off some jewelry with basic magical functionalities.

Of course, in their words, these were exquisite ornaments greatly beneficial for everyday life.

In reality, they were simply made with low-rank magic gems.

This world seemed to prefer wearing heaps of gemstones, with the young girl’s thumb-sized sapphire lined up from top to bottom, small to big, and many to few, gracefully arrayed in three rows.

Their sole function was a purification spell, which could make the wearer radiate rejuvenation.

Incredibly, it fetched a price even higher than the mithril greatshield!

This was not Hill’s original world, where even fist-sized sapphires were common!

Hill gently grasped his right hand with his left, reminding himself that money in this world wasn’t so useful, and there was no need to rush into deceiving others for spending money.

Such a necklace, he could make one in a minute!

Not to mention sapphires, Hill could make rubies, purple crystals, whatever one desired!

Lost in his musings, Hill completely disregarded whether the high price was because the beautiful female auctioneer adorned herself with various ornaments, parading around the stage.

The lady, a grand knight with a tall figure and lengthy neck, had the largest sapphire of her necklace slip into her gown seemingly by accident.

Standing on the stage with blushing cheeks, she extracted the gemstone gently with two fingers, instantly driving the auction atmosphere to the peak.

What initially attracted bids only from ladies turned into a fierce competition by the addition of male contenders.

In the end, it was indeed bought by a middle-aged nobleman seated on the second floor.

As the female auctioneer removed the necklace and placed it on a dish, a collective sigh washed over the auction room.

Hill was unfazed; the girls from the Undead Tribe had long since toughened his nerves to unbreakability.

Instead, he turned his attention to the male auctioneer standing to the side; although the young man still wore a sunlight-like smile, the light flickering in his eyes was rather obscure.

Indeed, colleagues could prove to be rivals, regardless of gender.

Even though the male auctioneer put great effort into his subsequent performance, the highest bid of the jewelry auction still went to that sapphire necklace.

When they left the stage, the female auctioneer was practically blooming like a flower.

To Hill, aside from the young couple’s skirmish, the auction only revealed how the world conducted bidding events.

The magical system weapons and equipment that followed only further clarified just how poor the alchemy of this world was.

By the end, Hill was nearly dozing off.

Fortunately, the gavel of auctioneer Lawson was quite forceful. Hill quietly yawned and stood up, ready to leave early.

”Respected mage lord,” the maid who noticed Hill pushing open the doors quickly bowed in greeting, ”Are you leaving? It’s truly regrettable that this year’s auction items failed to meet your needs.

Over the next few days, new items will be auctioned; does the Golden Age Commerce have the honor to invite you to participate again?”

She took out a gilded book from her bosom: ”This book contains the upcoming auction treasures; we hope you can find what you need within.

However, as the finale of the Winter Pledge, it’s not listed in the book. Aside from a few in charge, no one knows what special treasures will be available that day.

If possible, we hope you can come to see for yourself.”

Hill accepted the book and flipped through it carelessly, then frowned and tossed the book back to the maid: ”I understand, I’ll come and have a look if I have time.”

”If you have any valuable items, please trust in the reputation of Golden Age,” the maid hurriedly caught the book and quickly added.

She smartly didn’t ask why Hill didn’t keep the book, nor did her face show any surprise.

It seemed the divine power waves from the Golden Age book weren’t targeting Hill specifically, but were always present.

But, undoubtedly, if Hill had left with the book without knowing any better, he would have been walking around with a Coin Church tracker on him.
