Surviving The Fourth Calamity

Chapter 558: Chapter 356 Searching for the Devil’s Commander

William’s royal carriage came to a stop on a hill three kilometers opposite the city, where the puppet horses were retracted and the vast carriage compartment stretched and expanded into a small palace.

A golden light shot out from the palace, and a rhombus-shaped crystal composed of eight small tablets appeared in mid-air, emitting countless rays of light that eventually interwove in front of the palace into a Resurrection Array.

The Undead Tribe who had fallen before the city walls had already begun to resurrect here.

When they had set out, the Undead Tribe was indeed at a disadvantage, but as some Legendary Rank devils were killed in mutually destructive ways by the Undead Tribe, the situation on the battlefield had once again become evenly matched.

However, the Undead Tribe still fought with difficulty. Hill looked up at the sky.

Twelve Demigod Level Deep Prison Demon Refining scattered in the air, constantly remedying the city’s defensive forces that were being pushed back.

Whenever a gap appeared in the Undead Tribe’s ranks, they would also swiftly fly there and obliterate the Undead Tribe in that area.

Sometimes, the Undead Tribe would adopt a baiting strategy, but unfortunately, these refined demons were too powerful; even if they were occasionally seriously injured, they still managed to escape back into the mid-air.

Though these refined demons did not seem to get along, they were not to the point where they would stand by and watch their colleagues die at the hands of humans.

As long as they lent a hand, any traps laid by the Undead Tribe were rendered useless.

But for the Undead Tribe, taking down a BOSS was always a matter of patience. If a trap failed, it meant there was a miscalculation somewhere in their plans.

Hill had already heard quite a few names of PVE commanders from the many Undead who passed by; they had begun to compete to see who could take down a minor Boss first.

Hill scrutinized the twelve devils above and felt that something was amiss.

”Hill,” William’s voice suddenly reached his ears, ”Come inside the Royal Palace, it’s still dangerous outside.”

Hill stood up and exited the carriage.

There was a side door to William’s makeshift Royal Palace, and Hill went straight through it.

Before he entered, a quick frown passed over his face; someone was watching him, with hostility.

Hill recalled the positions of the twelve refined demons and sketched out the rough terrain in his mind.

No, not them.

The person watching him was standing on the city walls, but posed an even greater threat to Hill than the twelve refined demons flying in the sky.

Although his mind was filled with countless thoughts, Hill still felt the slight transition upon entering the Royal Palace.

Thus, when he saw that he had entered William’s Stone Palace, he was not particularly surprised.

If William had really stayed in that makeshift palace, he would have been truly mad.

Controlling the internal space had become very natural for him.

William, seated on his throne, gestured to him, ”Hill, come take a look. Who is the commander of this city? I could take out those 12 in the sky, but they are obviously trained to obey commands.

It looks like the refined demon in the middle is in command, but you can feel that there is no hierarchical difference among them.

Devils wouldn’t follow the orders of those of equal rank.

Unfortunately, they look back too often when they rescue their comrades.

It’s clear that they’re being scolded.

By nature, devils would save their own kind, but only after they’ve been beaten to half-death.

Today’s performance is overly zealous.

Although it’s just a momentary act, with frequency, even an observant person could get a feeling.

It’s a pity that it’s impossible to tell which one it is.”

Hill walked up beside William’s Throne, quietly contemplating as he looked at the huge curtain, comparing the people on the city walls with the hunches in his mind.

Then he pointed toward a knight wearing grey-black armor and holding a Giant Shield, who stood to the left, ”Keep an eye on him, the knight in the grey-black armor.

He has changed positions three times. Just as I was coming in, someone was watching me, and I remember he was also in that direction.

Next is the second one on the right, wearing a deep blue Mage Robe. Although I feel he is also pretending to be a commander, he was indeed standing next to that knight.

My intuition tells me it’s that knight, but it could also be this mage.

I can’t make a more definite judgment.”

William smiled, ”Ah, indeed, I was almost deceived!

I’ve been suspecting this mage, but something always felt off.

Sometimes, their looking back is too deliberate.

Spencer, please notify the Undead Tribe’s commanders. I need another trap, a harsher one.”

It wasn’t a few minutes before the Undead Tribe began their own performance.

If it weren’t for Hill knowing that this was preparing a trap, he might actually believe that the Undead Tribe had made a blunder.

Initially, it was just the mage troops that had a small hole appear in their Water Mage unit, and a refined demon charged over without hesitation. Though he was injured, he triumphantly returned with the support of his comrades, and that section of the mage ranks was almost completely annihilated.

However, the Undead Tribe seemed to be a tad slow in filling the gap, and the Swordsman squad guarding in front of the Priest troop was exposed to the sight of the Refined Demons.

Almost instantly, two Refined Demons dived down and killed those unprotected Swordsmen outright.

The screams of the Priests, along with the Holy Light Shield springing up here and there, greatly exhilarated the Refined Demons who had finally caught a weakness in the Undead Tribe. They charged down in a group of five, without any regard for the rest of the Undead Tribe who were about to assault the city walls.

However, although a good number of Priests were slaughtered, those five Devils were pulled straight to the ground by an interwoven Giant Net.

The most potent Light of Healing from hundreds of thousands of Priests was used without hesitation on these few Devils.

The Refined Demons screamed and struggled frantically, the pain was too much for them.

Even though the Giant Net trapping them was not indestructible, the agony caused these few Refined Demons to temporarily lose their strength.

Hill and William both watched intently at the two suspects on top of the city wall, not taking their eyes off them.

The Knights of the Undead Tribe had already surrounded that area, and the Mages were also hovering in mid-air. The sight of a Heavenly Net cast made the remaining Refined Demons hesitate a bit to risk their lives to save those foolish enough to steal glory.

But they received orders that they couldn’t ignore the rescue mission.

These Refined Demons were high-ranking Devils; other than two curved horns and wings on their backs, they looked hardly different from humans.

It was just some additional patterns on their faces.

So, the hesitation and struggle on their faces were really obvious, it made one believe it was impossible for the Commander to be among them.

Although they eventually made up their minds and charged in, not only did most of them suffer grievous injuries, but they also failed to save all of the five opportunists, leaving one life behind.

A slightly weaker Devil screamed as it vanished amidst the golden light.

”The power of the Sun God, it really does deal great damage to Devils!” William exclaimed in admiration, recognizing easily the force behind the Undead Tribe’s finishing blow.

They had confirmed that the real Commander was that Knight.

Although it was the Mage who issued commands, at a critical moment, the Mage couldn’t help glancing at the Commander. Even though it was merely for an instant before he feigned composure and directed his gaze forward, commanding steadily.

But once their connection was noticed, it was easy for William to determine who the true commander was.

”He even wore a helmet, covering his mouth while speaking!”

”Though cunning, with close attention, discrepancies can still be spotted.

Indeed, it wasn’t visible if he was speaking, but I could still discern the vibrations of the air,” William said with a faint smile. ”Although his armor looked similar to the other Knights’ in style, a close examination revealed a vast difference in quality.

Once a problem is detected, it’s easy to spot the flaws everywhere.”

”Hill,” he turned his head towards Hill and said, ”But that Mage, it’s best not to let him go either. Even though our judgment is that it’s the Knight, we need to avoid the possibility that they have anticipated our judgment.

Can you use your Divine Artifact again?”

”No problem,” Hill replied affirmatively. ”But it can only be used once a day, so we should pick the right moment.”

Three kilometers, in this world, was nothing once one reached the Magister rank.

Not to mention with a Divine Artifact, even from ten kilometers away, it could strike.

Hill, fighting on his own was fine, but if he needed to join a simultaneous attack, he still lacked the ability to analyze the battle situation.

”I’ll tell you when,” William said crisply. ”Spencer, inform the Undead Tribe that since most of these Refined Demons are heavily injured, it’s time to prepare for an all-out attack.”

Hill placed his hand on the pendant. The presence of his Holy Relic Painting was so obvious that it was best to attack directly the moment it was revealed, to prevent the Devils from becoming wary.

The Undead Tribe had already begun their frenzied assault.

The intensity of the battlefield increased several times in an instant, with Holy Rain and Blizzard in the sky continuing relentlessly, almost forming a Tornado Storm.

Hill looked up at the sky in amazement; the Undead Tribe seemed to have learned quite a bit of Wind Magic.

Minor whirlwinds were already forming slowly; just put fire in the middle, and a crazy Tornado Storm will surely form.

If these Devils were caught in an Ice Storm filled with Holy Rain and sucked into the Tornado, it would be common for them to be swirled to death.

Hill knew that creating an Ice Tornado like this was easy, but to generate more and to accurately draw in these Refined Demons required not just dominating the skies with their own magic but also precisely calculated positioning of each whirlwind.

Were the Undead treating this war with the same diligence as writing a thesis?

Even if most of the crucial calculations were done by Divine Artifacts, it still required sufficient analytical ability!

Hill watched in a daze.

The Undead didn’t seek to have every Devil swept up in the Ice Storm; they also feared that if not controlled properly, these Ice Tornadoes could collide, detonate, or swallow each other.

Hence, at the Devil’s feet, with the Fire Wall raging into form, only seven Ice Storms were shaped.

They also made an effort to leave the two most heavily injured ones behind.

Suddenly, the top of the Royal Palace burst open like a blooming flower, with William standing up abruptly, the platform of William’s Throne carrying Hill and his Holy Relic Painting soaring into the air.

”Strike!” At William’s command, a brilliant gold-red light of Scorching Ray cut directly toward the city wall.
