Worthless Profession: Dragon Tamer

Chapter 142, The Special Envoy Testing Lu Fan

Translator: Silavin

If it was just ordinary small skirmishes and sparring between students, there would naturally be no problem. The University would not intervene. In fact, they would even encourage it. However, this matter has clearly gone beyond the scope of ‘small skirmishes’.

The entire Dragon Capital University is paying attention to this battle, and the tension between Lu Fan and Jiang Fengyun also seems to be extremely intense. Who can guarantee that if this matter continues to ferment, it would not cause some adverse consequences?

Zhao Shengming’s original intention was for the University to intervene. If Lu Fan and Jiang Fengyun wanted to compete for the title of Freshmen King, that was fine, but the impact should be reduced, so as not to make the entire University stormy.

After Zhao Shengming put forward his idea, the principal behind the door suddenly laughed. “Vice Principal Zhao, it’s just a small matter between students, what trouble can this cause? Tomorrow night, let these two bring their companions to spar, and won’t the matter be over? Just consider it as an additional match for the freshmen exam. If it wasn’t for Lu Fan going to the Flying Dragon Cemetery, today’s finals would have been a clash between these two teams, right?”

“Although that’s true…” Zhao Shengming was still worried, “I’m afraid that with the current massive popularity of this sparring match, even if a winner is decided, some people will be dissatisfied with the result. At that time…”

The principal interrupted Zhao Shengming, saying. “If you are so worried, then let the University make it an official match. This way, we can let Lu Fan and Jiang Fengyun spar under our supervision. Others in the University will not have any objections after the outcome is decided, right?”

“Vice Principal Zhao, you don’t need to worry too much. Although this matter is indeed very popular, it should end by tomorrow. Rather than worry about Lu Fan and Jiang Fengyun, you might as well worry about whether Lu Fan’s Combat Power can satisfy the Dragon Capital Special Envoy who will come to our Dragon Capital University in a month.”

Zhao Shengming was startled upon hearing this and frowned. “The Dragon Capital Special Envoy is coming in a month? So soon?”

The principal replied. “It’s not that soon if you consider how little time we have left before the official start of the National Trial. It’s reasonable for the Special Envoy to come at this time to assess the one we’re sending to participate in the National Trial.”

Zhao Shengming showed a solemn expression, fully aware of the importance of this matter.

Their Dragon Capital University had given this spot to Lu Fan, and Lu Fan had not even undergone his Second Profession Change yet.

Although Lu Fan was indeed extremely strong, if the Special Envoy’s requirements were high and insisted that Lu Fan was not qualified to represent Dragon Country in the National Trial, it would be difficult to handle the aftermath.

Dragon Capital University would need to find other Players to replace Lu Fan, or this spot might even be revoked and given to other Universities.

While Zhao Shengming remained silent, the sound of flipping papers coming from inside the room could be heard as the principal spoke again. “I just received news today that the Special Envoy will soon come to our Dragon Capital University to assess Lu Fan. Moreover, here’s the interesting thing. This Special Envoy is Ruan Changfeng from the Dragon Capital upper echelons, who recently got demoted three ranks in succession.”

[Ruan Changfeng?!] This name was very familiar to Zhao Shengming. Being in Dragon Capital, he certainly knew that Ruan Changfeng was a big shot in Dragon Capital, but later he seemed to have offended a formidable figure from the Extremely Far North Ice Plains, so he was demoted three ranks in succession. Right now, even his colleagues dare not to speak up for him.

Although Zhao Shengming had no interest in prying into the movements of officials, this matter was quite well known in Dragon Capital, so he had heard about it.

Moreover, he had also heard that Ruan Changfeng’s demotion seemed to have been caused by his attitude in handling a matter related to the Little Princess of Extremistis Country in Jianghai City. It had greatly displeased that man from the Extremely Far North Ice Plains…

Thinking of this, Zhao Shengming suddenly connected everything! [Ruan Changfeng must have a grudge against Lu Fan since he got demoted because of how he handled the matter concerning Lu Fan and Jin Zhu!]

Perhaps because Zhao Shengming had not spoken for a long time, the principal inside the room knew Zhao Shengming had understood the murky waters of this situation. Thus, he added. “You’ve also realised what it means if the Special Envoy is Ruan Changfeng, right?”

Zhao Shengming made a sound of agreement, then said: “I’ve heard that Ruan Changfeng didn’t have a good reputation during his tenure. He is  known for being petty and narrow-minded. I don’t know if him becoming the Special Envoy to test Lu Fan is a coincidence or if he actively sought the post. But no matter what, this person definitely knows Lu Fan is the culprit who caused his demotion. Given his personality, he will probably make things difficult for Lu Fan in every possible way when testing for his qualifications. If that’s the case, it will be really tough for Lu Fan.”

“En.” The principal hummed in thought, then said, “As the Special Envoy, he has absolute say in the qualifications of those participating in the National Trial Secret Realm.”

Zhao Shengming solemnly said: “Although I can appeal the Special Envoy’s assessment results, the time is too tight. The process would also be too troublesome and might get drawn out. Even without the results being decided upon, this will most likely affect Lu Fan’s participation in the National Trial Secret Realm. Things have really become troublesome…”

At this point, the principal chuckled, then said: “It could be described as troublesome, but it’s not that troublesome. To handle this matter well, there’s only one optimal solution – that is to make Ruan Changfeng unable to find any fault with Lu Fan’s Combat Power.”

Zhao Shengming was stunned upon hearing this. He bitterly smiled and said. “This sounds simple, but it’s very difficult to do. I’ve heard that Ruan Changfeng is a Level 76 Third Profession Player. He is strong on his own. If he wants to make things difficult for Lu Fan, it’s almost impossible for Lu Fan to pass the test. After all, even if Lu Fan undergoes his Second Profession Change, he would still be weaker than Ruan Changfeng. If he says Lu Fan isn’t good enough, no one can refute him.”

“That’s not necessarily true!” The principal’s tone was firm, “I was the one who made the final decision to let Lu Fan become the candidate for the National Trial. The reason I dared to bet all our chips on him for the National Trial is because I could see his potential. To be honest, if he can’t even pass Ruan Changfeng’s test, then he really isn’t qualified to represent Dragon Country in the National Trial!”

At this point, the principal’s tone became a bit calmer. “In any case, Ruan Changfeng serving as the Special Envoy is indeed a major hurdle Lu Fan needs to go through. At the same time, we can’t be careless about it either. The most urgent task now is to quickly make him stronger. Be it if he can pass the test or not, be it if he can bring glory to our country in the National Trial, Lu Fan still represents our Dragon Capital University.”

Zhao Shengming nodded and said. “Alright, I will go back and do my best to find more resources for Lu Fan, to help him quickly reach Level 30 and undergo his Second Profession Change. I will do my best to help him make up for the disadvantage in levels.”

“En.” The principal responded indifferently, then said no more.

Zhao Shengming was about to leave when he suddenly remembered his purpose for coming here. So, instead of leaving immediately, he hesitated for a moment and then asked: “Then, Principal, what do you think about tomorrow’s sparring match between Lu Fan and Jiang Fengyun…”

“You’re asking for my opinion? I’ll be there to watch the scene. It is such a lively event, of course I can’t miss it.” The principal’s light words immediately left Zhao Shengming speechless.

After another long silence, Zhao Shengming finally had nothing more to say and slightly bowed his head. “Then, I’ll take my leave first.”

With that, Zhao Shengming left with a worried heart. He was still concerned that tomorrow’s sparring match, due to how much of a spotlight was being shined on it, might have some uncontrollable negative impacts.

But with the principal having such an attitude of merely wanting to watch a good show, what more could he, a vice principal, say?

…

The next day, the heat surrounding Lu Fan’s upcoming official sparring match with Jiang Fengyun was getting ever more intense. The entire Dragon Capital University was discussing who would win this battle.

The voices supporting Jiang Fengyun and Xu Jing’s victory were a bit louder. Because the post that Jiang Fengyun had Xu Jing publish earlier was hailed by many as a ‘technical post’, everyone felt that the analysis was quite on point. From the perspective of Profession advantages, Xu Jing perfectly countered Lu Fan and Jian Ying, while Jiang Fengyun himself was very strong.

Additionally, Jiang Fengyun and Xu Jing had just won first place in the freshmen exam with overwhelming strength, while Lu Fan and Jian Ying were ‘deserters’ who actively forfeited. No one could even explain why the two of them forfeited. Therefore, although Lu Fan had the impressive record of defeating Chen Tianzhi, and many people acknowledged his abilities, more people still felt that Lu Fan’s chances of victory were slim to none.

Unless Lu Fan had a Pet Dragon. If Lu Fan could really summon a Pet Dragon, then the result of this battle would naturally be a different story.

However, Jiang Fengyun had publicly stated multiple times that Lu Fan absolutely did not own a Pet Dragon, and he was very certain about this point. Therefore, another highlight of today’s sparring match was whether Lu Fan would summon a Pet Dragon. This match would answer the rumours of him truly being a ‘Dragon Tamer’.

The time for Lu Fan and Jiang Fengyun’s battle was set for 12 at noon. However, by 9 AM, the entire arena was already packed with people.

Everyone was there not to find sparring partners in the arena, but to watch the battle between Lu Fan and Jiang Fengyun.

Everyone wanted to come early to secure a good spot, but even at this time, they were still squeezed at the entrance, unable to get inside.

Perhaps since the founding of Dragon Capital University, the arena had never gathered so many people.

Except for Arena No. 15 which was left open to be used, all other arenas were filled with people.

The entire first floor of the arena suddenly lost its function for people to fight and spar.

Helplessly, the teaching assistants of the arena could only come forward to maintain order at the scene to prevent any stampede from happening.

Time passed minute by minute, and as it approached noon, someone outside the arena shouted, “The people from Wind Cloud Pavilion are here!”
