My Alleged Husband

Chapter 2250: Chapter 2083: Promise

The regret between us is already worn-out and tattered, devoid of any fancy words, yet it expresses our discontent; isn’t it laughable? In the end, I remained alone, spending my days in solitude.

”Since you no longer hate your parents now, could you allow them to come back home? After all, they are your parents, and it was because of them that you exist. They gave you life, and if you allow them back, they will surely be very happy. I believe that when your heart truly lets go of the hatred for your parents, it will happen on the day when you genuinely feel that they love you. For in their heart, no matter why they abandoned you initially, you were always important to them, if you believe in your parents! Isn’t that right?” Old Master Zhang asked Zhang Yichen.

Zhang Yichen was stunned; he knew well that it was only his grandfather who truly understood him.

”Grandpa, I’ve always known that in this world, only you truly love me. I also know that you have given so much for me. But do you know? I don’t want you to be hurt on my account anymore; I wish to see you live happily, to watch over you, because seeing you suffer so much for me deeply pains me. I never want to see my beloved grandfather shed tears or worry because of me. For so many years, you have given so much for me, yet I have never repaid you, and I repeatedly acted selfishly, making you sad, worrying about me; I am truly sorry. But I hope you can forgive me. I don’t know how to approach the subject of my parents because, as you guessed, their abandonment inflicted a profound psychological impact on me as a child. If they hadn’t heartlessly abandoned me back then, neither you nor I would have faced ridicule from others, nor would I have had to endure the judgmental views of people. Oftentimes, I really can’t understand why other parents can sacrifice everything for their children, yet my parents couldn’t. My parents chose instead to hurt me repeatedly, not genuinely treating me as their son. I can’t comprehend how there can be parents as heartless as mine. But now I understand; my parents weren’t heartless; they just didn’t know how to connect with me as their son. They were clueless about being with me as a son. They vainly tried to build a good relationship with me, but they never realized that their methods of harmonious living were mistaken. Such ruthless ways of interaction are what I detest the most, and perhaps because of this, the distance between us grew.”

”Child, actually, deep down, both you and your grandfather know that your parents aren’t evil by nature. They don’t know how to get along with their loved ones or with their son. You are the child they brought into this world with great difficulty; they won’t stop loving you. But often, love isn’t just spoken words; it needs to be demonstrated through actions, which you understand. But do you know? Your parents have truly given a lot for you, too, and you shouldn’t think their decision to abandon you was a massive error. Although it was wrong, there were reasons behind their actions. Could you not try to empathize with them a little?”

”Grandpa, I just can’t understand why up until now, you keep asking me to empathize with my parents. But when they did those things, did they ever consider how much pain they inflicted on me as their son? Watching helplessly as my parents hurt the woman I love the most, with no power to stop them, do you know the feeling of hopelessness? It’s as if the entire world turned dark, reaching out into a void, seeing only wishes in my eyes. Do you know the bitterness? Being immersed entirely in a hellish torment, and all of this wasn’t caused by someone else, but by my most trusted mother and my most trusted father. Since childhood, I always longed for my parents to return to me, to give me the parental love I never received. Even when they hurried back to the country years ago, it wasn’t genuine love, but they used excuses again and again to hurt the woman I love the most. I realized at that moment that maybe my parents didn’t truly consider me as their son in their hearts. Their love for me was so intense that I couldn’t bear it; it pressured me greatly. Watching them hurt the woman I love the most time after time, yet unable to protect her, the feeling of helplessness nearly drove me insane. I wished the world could stop, hoping time could forever remain at a day when our family was happy together, never moving forward. I don’t even know how to face a world that I can’t confront; I never want to endure such helplessness again. I don’t want to break down once more. Maybe it means little to you in your heart, but I can see how deeply you care about my parents, always loving them. You have given up so much for your own son, and you are no different with me, yet I can’t do anything for you. Grandpa, all these years, what my parents owe me, I no longer wish to pursue. I just want them to return home, as per your wish, so we can be reunited as a family. However, those two have already obtained divorce papers, perhaps they aren’t suited to live under the same roof any longer. I have tried hard to persuade them, to make them remarry, but they don’t wish to be together. Perhaps it’s due to my father’s decisive decision then, which truly hurt my mother’s heart. Watching my mother cry due to a decision my father made, do you know? The grief in my heart was immense. That was my mother, after all, no matter how wrong she may have been; she still gave birth to me. I now realize that no matter how many mistakes a mother makes, every mistake made for her child is understandable because her heart genuinely cares for her child. If not, she wouldn’t sacrifice so much, wouldn’t risk everything for her child. Because of this, I choose to trust my mother, and because of this, I choose to let her continue living with my father and agree to let them come home to Zhang Family to live happily with us.”

The promises made once can’t be fulfilled; isn’t it laughable? The person who remains etched in the heart is still him.
