My Alleged Husband

Chapter 2204: Chapter 2037: One Falls, Another Rises

”Grandpa, another year has passed from spring to autumn, yet our family has not reunited!”

Zhang Zhentian never imagined that life with his wife would be so difficult, that there would be no joy at all. As a husband, what had he done to make her feel so sad and miserable? Did he really see himself as such an incompetent husband? His hope was that his wife could live happily and joyfully with him, so why was she not happy at all being with him? Every word his wife said felt like a knife piercing his heart, hurting him so much. Despite giving everything to her, all he got in return was her coldness, even today she spoke hurtful words to him. What more could he do to make his wife less hurt, to live joyfully together? Would letting her go completely free her heart to be truly happy?

The moment this thought appeared in Zhang Zhentian’s mind, he quickly suppressed it. He didn’t want this thought to survive in his mind because it made him realize how much he cared about his wife and that he couldn’t be without her. If he truly let her go, who would he have for the rest of his life? Would he really have to live alone forever? He couldn’t let that happen because if it did, he would never be happy again.

”Wife, I know everything I did in the past made you very sad, and it embarrassed you too. I selfishly made you take the blame for me so many times. I admit it’s all my fault and I shouldn’t have been so selfish towards you. But I truly cannot live without you. You leaving me is like ripping my flesh and blood. You are the only person I can’t be without in my life. Can you really turn away and forget all the beautiful memories we had? I don’t believe those memories are gone from your mind. I so desperately want to continue living with you. Can you give me some time, trust me once more, give me another chance to continue living with me? Can we both truly be happy and have each other? Why do we all have to suffer like this? You leave me, and your heart is in pain, while mine is even more excruciating. Why punish yourself with the mistakes I’ve made?”

Xia Jing was also reluctant to let go of this relationship. After all, this was the love of her life, earned through years of companionship, enduring ups and downs together. How could she selfishly abandon him today, abandon the relationship that could have been happy and joyful? Why should she continue being as selfish as she was in the past, thinking only of herself? But if she agreed to get back together, who could guarantee the past wouldn’t repeat itself? One lie led to divorce, so what benefit would she have being with him again? What value would she have in his eyes?

”I really don’t know if I should believe every word you say. You made the same promises years ago, even over a decade ago, but you never fulfilled them. Promises have become routine, and you never considered my feelings. You can’t erase the hurt you caused me. I could forgive once, twice, but you used one lie to force a divorce, and that pain is a permanent scar in my heart. I can’t forget how decisive you were back then, dragging me to the civil affairs bureau for a divorce. I agreed, and you’ve been looking for me ever since—I’m aware of that. But I can’t be with you again, because every time we’re together, I remember how desperate I was at the civil affairs bureau. You were so ruthless, ignoring my pleas, and happily abandoned me. I don’t know what you’ve been through all these years, but now you command me to return, like it’s an order. Why should I go through this again? Just because you were my husband once? Do I owe you endless forgiveness? I’m not a saint, I can’t treat this relationship like a saint. You hurt me, and the hurt doesn’t disappear because of a few simple pleas or apologies. I can’t love you the way I used to; that love has long vanished. Why make each other suffer now? I want to live my own life—a life without you would be so much happier. I can freely do what I want, live in my world without worries. When you were around, I always thought of you, feared being with you would hurt others. But you never cared about that, only knowing how to enjoy life. Someone like that isn’t worthy of living with me, and I don’t belong with someone like you. Your selfishness frightens me; everything you do terrifies me. I can’t live this way, constantly walking on thin ice. The mental strain is unbearable. I’m genuinely afraid that if this continues, I might lose my sanity. I don’t want that day to come too soon; I still want to live longer. I want to see my son forgive me. I don’t want to lose my precious life because of you. Please stop harassing me, for our mutual well-being.”

Life is so precious, how have we reached such a point?
