My Alleged Husband

Chapter 78: Chapter 76 Entering the family by marriage_1

Li Jiayuan spent a little time chatting with Li Haixiao before heading back to her bedroom. She wept in her bedroom heartbreakingly, finding it hard to believe that her father wouldn’t be able to wait for the birth of her and Xiao Wei’s child. She felt certain that her father was keeping something from her, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on what was amiss.

Watching Li Jiayuan’s retreating figure, Li Haixiao felt an indescribable emotion stirring within him. The Li Corporation that he’d built from the ground up with painstaking effort would one day be left to Li Jiayuan alone. It wasn’t that he was reluctant to part with the empire he had established; he felt unreconciled. He never imagined that the empire he had devoted his life to building would face the prospect of his premature departure due to a terminal illness. He had always intended to leave Li Corporation in Jiayuan’s hands after his death, so he felt no reluctance about entrusting it to her. What troubled him was the thought of Jiayuan unable to hold her own under the weight of such a vast responsibility. He worried that after his death, unhappy shareholders might cause trouble, and the idea terrified him; he was afraid Jiayuan would be bullied...

Li Haixiao didn’t fear the death that approached; it was almost a relief. He could finally join the woman he had loved all his life. The only thing he couldn’t let go of was Li Jiayuan.

In truth, Li Haixiao was well aware that despite the Li Family’s immense wealth and reach, many had envied him over the years. If he were to pass away suddenly, there would surely be those who took out their discontent on Jiayuan, an outcome he dreaded above all else!

”Jiayuan, don’t blame your father. I’m not keeping it from you, I just don’t want you to worry. I’ll arrange your wedding soon, and you’ll be the most beautiful bride. As long as you live a safe life, that will be the greatest reward for me. Maybe you don’t realize how happy it makes me when you smile at me, and each time, I think to myself, ’That’s my daughter!’” Li Haixiao, looking at Jiayuan’s bedroom, muttered to himself.

A father’s love is indeed grand. Li Haixiao wasn’t afraid of dying or that his empire might crumble—he was just afraid that Jiayuan would be unhappy in the future.

Li Haixiao wished he could just keep accompanying Li Jiayuan forever. There was nothing more painful than losing a loved one.

”Xiao Wei, are you free tomorrow? I’d like to talk to you!” After much thought in her bedroom, Jiayuan decided to make a call to Xiao Wei, asking him to meet up for a talk.

”Yes!”

”Then let’s meet tomorrow at Star Coffee Shop. I’ll wait for you. Don’t stand me up!”

Xiao Wei felt something was off, and he asked, ”Jiayuan, is something wrong? Your voice sounds strange. Have you been crying?”

Hearing Xiao Wei’s concern, Jiayuan felt even more upset. That’s often how it is—when someone offers comfort in your moment of sadness, you just end up feeling worse, totally unable to contain your emotions.

”Xiao Wei, I’m fine. We’ll talk about it when we meet tomorrow. You should rest well tonight. I’m hanging up now, bye!” Jiayuan didn’t give Xiao Wei a chance to respond, ending the call as soon as she finished speaking.

Listening to the beeping sound from the phone, Xiao Wei had a bad feeling. He wondered: Could something have happened to Jiayuan? She never hangs up on me like that. What’s going on today? My heart is in a flutter, and I feel completely insecure...

Unable to sleep a wink, Xiao Wei got dressed and ran to Jiayuan’s doorstep to wait. It somehow made him feel more at ease, thinking that Jiayuan wouldn’t be in trouble or sad if he was there.

Xiao Wei sat vigil by Jiayuan’s door for the whole night, startling awake frequently, unable to sleep well. Around nine o’clock, Jiayuan opened her door and found Xiao Wei sitting amid the lush trees by her doorstep; she thought he was trying to scare her.

”Hey! What are you hiding here for? You’re not trying to scare me, are you?” Jiayuan asked Xiao Wei with a smile.

Xiao Wei gave an awkward smile and said, ”Heh heh, I didn’t expect you to see through me!”

Xiao Wei felt that as long as Li Jiayuan was happy, she could think whatever she wanted, and he would definitely not expose her delusions.

”Let’s go, let’s talk at the coffee shop.”

”Okay!”

The two arrived at the Star Coffee Shop.

”Xiao Wei, there’s something I want to discuss with you, and I hope you won’t get mad after hearing it!” Li Jiayuan started speaking to Xiao Wei.

”You tell me, as long as it’s not about us being incompatible or something,” Xiao Wei said with a smile, genuinely not wanting to lose Li Jiayuan.

”Xiao Wei, I want to ask you, can you marry me and enter the Li Family as a son-in-law?” Li Jiayuan cautiously brought up her concern.

Upon hearing Li Jiayuan’s words, Xiao Wei was momentarily stunned; he couldn’t understand why Li Jiayuan would suddenly bring up such a question: ”Jiayuan, has something happened? You’ve never mentioned anything about entering a family like this before, so why today...”

”Xiao Wei, I know that suddenly discussing this with you is hard for you to accept, but I have no other choice, I don’t want to let my dad leave this world with regrets! Can you please just do this for me?” Li Jiayuan pleaded with Xiao Wei.

Xiao Wei automatically filtered out what Li Jiayuan had just said except for ”I don’t want to let my dad leave this world with regrets!” Realizing that something was amiss, he quickly asked, ”Jiayuan, explain clearly what you mean by ’not wanting your dad to leave with regrets.’ Is something wrong?”

Li Jiayuan burst into tears and told Xiao Wei, ”Xiao Wei, please don’t blame me for crying in front of you again. You know, after I hung up the phone with you yesterday, I quietly went to my dad’s room. By accident, I saw his medical report in his drawer. My dad has end-stage renal failure and doesn’t have much time left. When I came home yesterday, I heard him talking to himself while holding my mom’s photo. I stood at the door and heard him say he originally wanted you to enter the Li Family, but was afraid I wouldn’t agree, so he didn’t mention it. He said he didn’t know if he’d have time to see our children be born! Xiao Wei, you also know that end-stage renal failure is equivalent to uremia, and it’s no different from cancer, so I was thinking...”

Xiao Wei looked at Li Jiayuan and said, ”But uremia can be treated with kidney dialysis, can’t it?”

”Even if dialysis is an option, have you considered that one day it will fail, and each dialysis session harms the body? My dad has such a simple wish, can’t you fulfill it for my sake? Even though you would enter my family, our children could still take your surname after the first one!” Li Jiayuan said as her crying grew worse.

Xiao Wei sighed, not sure what to do, but he remembered he once said he would never let Li Jiayuan be saddened again. He remembered what Li Haixiao had told him, so he decided to agree to Li Jiayuan’s request: ”Alright, I promise you, stop crying!”

Li Jiayuan, elated, looked at Xiao Wei and said, ”Thank you, thank you for everything you’ve done for me!”

”Silly, who let you be my wife!”
